  1. Yes many of my apples lost all their leaves and apples a few weeks ago. Hope they didn't just die off randomly
  2. It sucks to have late season plots get wiped out early. But I guess take advantage of it when you can. Hopefully there still in there during bow season. and that the bulbs/tubers are still in the ground for winter. My only good bulb plot was getting hit early again. kinda bummed. But my other washed out bulb plot is coming back a little bit..
  3. Here is one plot im trying to improve soil health this year.. With a May planted soil building mix.. Picture taken 7/10. Good mix for soil health, plus preferred deer foods as well. And the turkeys absolutely loved it too .. With the good rains we had since End of July, this plot is the best its ever been. This plot lacks organic matter. So with the right seed blends planted, we get the best of both worlds..
  4. I do all my plantings in no till. Sparayer, Spreader and a lawn roller. Balansa Clover is awesome for building soils. It also puts out a ton of BioMass. Its very Cold hardy as well. I put it in my fall mixes this year. Cereal Rye(very high in carbon, breaks down slower) Helps with no till plantings and is great for adding organic matter in soils. Holds moisture better than any other cereal grain as well. I always try to push people to use seed blends, especially when trying to build soils. Seeds that help each other, and offer more to the wildlife.. Some are preferred at different times(wet vs dry conditions) and mature at different rates. Gives wildlife an option at many times of the year, instead of just a mono-culture.. Buckwheat is good. Annual clovers. Peas, All these in a spring planted mix or Fall planted. I highly recommend not adding Fire to your food plots, just burn it down with Gly, and let it lay get your seed under the dead mat. It will suppress weeds and hold moisture in. Fire Helps improve things, but If it were me, i would not use it on your food plots. Only for areas you want to revive and not plant. Fire is like a restart option.. IMO
  5. Nice work fellas! Best Of luck TF.. Bow season is fun!
  6. Got a cinnamon roaming the countryside.. Behind it was another young black bear. Im guessing a wandering young pair.. Lots of bear on camera this year it seems. Every card pull has bears on it this summer.. More than years past..
  7. Look into some habitat seeds. Sanctuary mixes etc.. They are perennial and many will grow to 8-10' tall. Its a lot of native seeds, but high quality cover/food.
  8. I love my archery tackle and Early Bow season! Its great watching unpressured critters roam the around. 2nd best is Late ML Season with Archery tackle or the ML... over a food source... that is some good times!
  9. Started Strip plantings this year as well. Keep the closer to cover strips in a perennial mix.. The rest get rotated out each year. I like to add "strips of Cover" between the strip plantings. These strips are usually a desired food source at one point or another. typically winter..
  10. They sure do take advantage whenever they can.. I believe coyotes will carry as much as possible back to the dens. They got to a doe i shot 2 years ago before i could get to her. matter of a few hours. She was already 1/4 eaten. I never made it back to check how quick she got cleaned up or if she was carried away.. Heres a couple coyote shots i got over the years, one being a fawn, and the other looks like an adult leg.. Guessing they were going back to the den with their "Score"
  11. Did not terminate plots, thankfully. Im going to take a pic today i hope. I have a screen that is well over 12ft, brassicas that 2 weeks ago were doing great, though already being eaten on.. Glad i dont have to terminate. this spot is my fav. I will look into the laws.. I offered some money just to hold a spot on the property years ago, but they wanted nothing to do with it, just said use the property and take care of it.. they dont want any "deals .. etc.." So i was grateful but worried as well, in case someone tried coming in and doing what just almost happened here..
  12. I plan to harvest the first doe possible and give to the family, or atleast the brother. Hes also building himself a new house. He getting his supplies and other materials from Armor Supply.. My buddy is a salesman there so i think a gift card might say thank you as well?
  13. Awesome, I will have to remember that application for next year! I want to do a big summer/Winter blend. Pretty close to what you have there, plus some. are those soybeans in the mix too?
  14. Update: Old Landowners son (New owners brother) Stepped in after seeing how shady this deal went down and put a nix to the lease deal. From hearing a few things the new "lease guy" mentioned he was going to do with the proerty. He Told his sisters and the rest of the family as well as the man who tried leasing, that the family property will never ever be leased for as long as he is alive. Gave the guy permission to hunt, but to not interfere with how things work on the property and to have us go about the property as we always have! What great news. That made my season! The sisters returned the money he deposited(very little for a 110 acres lease).
  15. I should start eating radish turnips and Kale.. Looks like theres an abundance at Moogs! lol Probably better for me than all these barely samiches too
  16. I get a lot of coyote group pics this time of year. Must be when mama decides to start taking the pups for some hunting trips.. Pup distress them in and whale em!
  17. I bought the Mathews MR7 from a member here through the For sale ads.. Very clean and tight shooting bow. Love it so far.
  18. I hear you. They ignored my pure stand of daikon radish a few years ago. a whole 1.5 cres worth. never touched top nor bottom. next year i mixed them in with PPT, and they ate everything. Thats one reason i like blends, if they dont like one species, hopefully theyll like the other. Until you see what they like/ are used to.. Keep us posted!
  19. Is your draw length right for you and your form?
  20. Hope it works out for you! Im in the same boat, Lost my best and biggest property last week. Heres to new beginnings. Just need to terminate my plots now.
  21. Never really noticed when they "prefer" the oats here. I always planted them in early Sept. The field behind me was planted to oats, and im guessing lightly seeded med red clover. It got harvested, and seems to have grown back possibly? This was last year. Never really noticed deer in it once it got over a ft tall. What did the deer eat, just the green seed heads? Dont blame you for going with what works! I bet those radish will take off. Mine needed a good boost of rain to take off. But the areas that hold too much moisture.. petered out.. Im not big into hunting plots either besides my bean plots. Early and late season. Id rather plant for herd health, then back off the plot to take advantage of the trails deer use to access the plot.
  22. Thanks for the lift Grampy! That is what i keep telling myself. In a way i feel like its a reality check as well, in more ways than one. Gets me back to the finer things in life, maybe not be as picky about harvest criteria, be thankful for what i have and the time that i have hear on earth, spend it with my family, whethe rit shunting our small parcel or anything else. etc.. As you mentioned, if a greater opportunity arise because of this, that would be amazing for sure. Thanks again!
  23. Good lort! You got some good eating there. Hopefully they come in and hit it for you with some cold weather. I learned the hard way the first 2 years doing bulb plots on our family farm in 8P .. The deer never touched a brassica plant i planted until year 3. It was weird and sucked at the same time lol. Didn't seem like there was any winter food around but they would not touch the leaves nor the bulb. Harvested corn and soybean fields around as well.
