  1. You'll see a marginal difference in deer activity this fall. But next year, with all the new growth, and a food plot, will be a Deer Bonanza!!! Logging is so beneficial to so many critters! Sounds like you have a top notch logger too. Perfect!
  2. Knowing the Iand helps. As each set up has it's own thermals, and drafts. Even with a steady wind! After awhile you learn what works where, and when, and what won't. You learn to be adaptable to changing wind conditions. If the wind changes, especially in a good spot, ya gotta move! Multiple setups for a good spot helps. Some setups can only be used under the right conditions. And even then, things can and do change quickly. It's all part of hunting. And anyone who hunts the hills and ridges, knows the extra challenges it takes to be successful.
  3. I too have noticed a few more bucks this year in our part of the Helderbergs, Berne and Knox. Nothing BIG yet on cam's, to this point though. Though the average antler size here for a three year old, is much smaller than say WNY, for the same age buck. Poorer soil conditions with the hard rocky ground, is most likely the reason. But given some age, we do get some pretty nice ones here and there! So true on how tough the hunting can be up here. But that can be said of most places. Not too many "easy" places to hunt deer. Especially mature bucks. Been roaming these hills since I was a boy, and I wouldn't trade it for anywhere. Temps in the hills above Albany usually average 7 to 10 degrees cooler than in the Hudson Valley. Predominate hunting wind up here is mostly NW. But with all the ridges, gullies, benches, and flats, even with a strong NW wind, the wind where you are set up could be SE!! Plenty of changing thermals too. Just part of what makes hunting here a challenge and fun!
  4. If you were a bit closer, I'd take you up on that offer! And I'm not usually a grumpy grampy..........grin.
  5. Beauty of a buck! He will make a fine mount! Best of luck!
  6. Nice pic's from 4-H ! Things seem to be shaping up nicely in this neck o' the woods!
  7. I think I was about eight years old when I discovered the peace and serenity of the woods. Most all of my biggest, and most difficult life decisions were made there. The forests and fields have always been my happy place. I'm not sure what kind of man I would be now, had I not discovered the ground that keeps me grounded. Some day my spirit will run freely there. philoshop, I know you will find what you seek, in the solitude of the forest. Enjoy sir.
  8. Absolutely beautiful my friend! The detail work is astounding. Your artistic talent knows no boundaries! I love how each one is different and original. Keep em coming!
  9. Mine would get that look when I said, 'treat' !
  10. The Dems are still butt hurt that Clinton lost. And Obama ran out of time. Get over it! Move on! I think politics in this country now, especially from the left, is deplorable! Bunch of whiney, crying babies, that didn't get their way.
  11. No doubt the doc's are mapping out a plan of action for you. My thoughts and prayers continue, for a full and complete recovery my friend.
  12. Right next to the aquarium there is a little village of shops. Nice place to walk and browse. Oh... and the ducks in there are pretty cool too! Just up from that is a steakhouse that is very good, sorry forgot the name. Mystic pizza is a great place to have a meal as well. They have more than pizza, and prices are reasonable. Right in town, near the draw bridge, there is a little park right on the water, to just sit back and relax. Very peaceful there. Some nice shops in town too, that the Mrs. may like to walk through. Mine does! Mystic is a cool place. Been there a number of times. Have fun!
  13. Great work from dog and handler Tom! Not so much for the hunter on this one.
  14. My wife costs me much more than the plots. I've kept her around for decades. It's something you love. So money well spent. No matter what you do, for something you love, or any hobbie, it will cost you dollars. Well worth the price for the happiness gained IMO.
  15. Nice Buck!! Welcome, great to have you join in on the forum! Best of luck this season!
  16. Sure is! We have two good college teams in the area, RPI and Union.
  17. BIG bear! One glance is all it takes to see that. Mid to high 300s.
  18. I've done some pretty stupid stuff back in the day. How did I avoid this?? But who knows, maybe I did and don't remember? Lot of stuff I don't remember from those days!.........grin
  19. I buy nothing from Dicks.
  20. Dang, sorry to hear about that Steve. I had right rotator cuff and ligament repair last year on May 4th. Wasn't able to draw my bow until September. Did kill a buck, though I'm still having problems with it. Left shoulder needs the same thing done, but I'm putting it off! Don't do anything untill you talk to the doc. Maybe you got lucky with minimal damage? You will know more after talking to him/her. Thoughts and prayers coming to ya. Good luck.
  21. Lets Go Red Wings! I don't watch a lot. But I still enjoy a good hockey game now and then. Go to a few AHL games in Albany and Glens Falls each year. Grandson's, their friends, and I always have a good time. And it's affordable good hockey.
  22. 100% they are wolves. Coyotes are shaped different. Most obvious is the rounded muzzles of a wolf. Yotes are much more pointed in the snout. The long lanky legs is another give away for the wolf. I have seen hundreds of coyotes in the wild. What's in the pic's just looks different to me. The pic's were taken in Minnesota, not New York! Wolves are somewhat common there.
  23. Some nice markings on that one!! I usually get a crack at one each season, while deer hunting.
  24. Beautiful rifle! Nothing like a nice piece of walnut, surrounding blued steel! Get out and shoot that tack driver! Oh.....and congratulations!
