disappointed with his small deer? wtf should be grateful that he enjoys you and you camaraderie enough to invite you too his land.this is another reason that hunter numbers will continue to dwindle until there are no sportsman left.how big a deer's antlers are shouldn't be the number one topic but that your fellow hunter was successful. like doc said our sport has been reduced to a numbers game and it is sad pushing most to be solo hunters and losing the traditions and comraderie of years past. at 33 years old i feel proud when i teach my kids the ways of past before big time celebrities and inches of horn took over the sport.

take up crow hunting gives you another reason to be in the woods and they make nice yote popsicles. -
that's a common misconception that i find show dogs were the demise of the cocker.personally i find it to be more the pet trade. some of the first cockers to become master hunters in the recently developed spaniel hunt tests were from pure show stock. i believe an overall good breading is the most important basis for the dog to work well. and yes fortunately some were intelligent enough to foresee this. even here in western NY there are at least 4 breeders with dogs displaying good field traits. i think another barrier our american cocker is facing is the trendiness of their English cousins. as far as shells i have been getting them for 5.00 a box for estates and 6 to 7 for Remington's/federals if and when i feel i want to splurge on some express long range they can be had for about 14 one of my local gun dealers sole ammo sales motto is to undersell the wally just across the way.i do believe it works out quite well for him. ants if you really want to get back into it maybe we could meet up and possibly spend some time on tug next fall....

had a good outing with my father and dog. took a rabbit and a grouse a piece. snow was a bit deeper than i would have liked but witnessed my cockers most exciting flushes yet as she dug one out it exploded in a burst of snow and fell to one shot of my 28. will have to remember as i tried to stop her from digging. yes the 28 can be expensive to shoot but i guess that's just how i am as i also shoot 16. only on pheasant even though i own a 12. i like going just outside the box and to nostalgia i guess and really enjoy the shock younger guys get when my cocker flushes or the old timers telling me they thought that cockers quit hunting years ago.

so are the majority of small game until thurs. this amazes me that people think our state only has deer and turkey

depends what stateland you hunt. i know of stands that have been up 18yrs undisturbed in low pressured lands have also heard of stands missing after a week others

pygmy travel light is an understatement even though my American cocker is small in stature she is willing to go all day. whistle compass a sandwich or 2 water in hydro pack. as for gun a very light 28 GA. double

i think that is probably the main reason also not because it can't do the job but becasue so many would try for more than the little gun can handle.

i think it is some what due to sub gauges being misunderstood. a 410 at true shotgun deer hunting ranges is adequate to take a whitetail. i am talking before all of these rifled barrels sabot slugs ect. the ranges our grandfathers would have been shooting deer at with plain barreled beaded shotguns out to 50 yrds. a 410 can easily take a deer at that range. but you would run the problem of people trying to push its limits. plus its ability to shoot pistol cartridges ect. this misunderstanding becomes very apparent when wing shooting though with people blaming a sub gauges power for lost birds.when in actuality they are more than likely pushing a lighter load at the same velocity causing a much smaller margin of error. therefore making most perceive to a larger gauge knocking birds down better or harder ect. which would only be true with sub par shooting. if the lead is truly put where it needs to be the sub gauge shotgun will kill just as well as the 12ga.

the only way their agendas will be met is if gutless Americans roll over and let them....it truthfully astonishes me what people seem to think is ok these days....

4's work good too out of a tight choked gun lead them little damage done at range due to fewer pelltes thrown

yes and the fact that everybody and their brother will play right into thier hands..... this was not a "Shooting" as they will hype it to be but rather two individuals in a fight amongst themselves with bad aim....i love how we can work against ourselves......

is the short hair a wide ranging dog? if so it may take some time for it to learn grouse as the don't run like pheasant the pointing dogs can't get as close i hunt a cocker so i just follow her through the woods..... where are you guys located? have not hunted the catskills in a few years only due to the drive... this time of year you can find them in some odd places cattails pine stands ect. also if you can find choke cherries on the bush its a good bet..... i have been finding plenty in the birch mid day lately also...... the other thing they don't start to move till mid morning no need to get up and at them wait till 930 or 10 when they are roosted they will let you go right by......tug hill is very productive as far as bird numbers go this time of year the are ussually singles also when you do flush one pay attention to where it goes and re flush it they don't fly far and be ready for them to take off outta the tree tops...... the younger forests are your best bet do an internet search for bids for public land logging in your area for the past ten years
