Strangest non-hunting thing you came across while hunting.

While walking a trail afew years back came acoss what look like a whiteish tube sock and I say whiteish because I was really more brown than white if you get the picturemi guess his feet were frozen being it sat on top of snow.that's why I'm always prepared for anything when I'm out there

These are some pretty crazy stories I hope I never have to run into. ???  Probably the oddest thing I have seen is a car.  I mean I was pretty far into the woods and I lood around and here is a car.  I don't know why it was there but maybe someone used it as a hunting blind back in the day. On state land I've come across all kinds of junk that you can tell people just drove by and throughout.  Such things as tv's, microwaves, and even a washer or dryer. LOL.

In the late 70s we were hunting in the Bear Swamp area, near New Hope. It was mainly an overgrown farm type area. I stumbled upon an area of several dozen cow skeletons.

I gotcha beat.  How about REAL COWS.  Summer 2009 a group of about 10 belted duchess' cows (including one mean bull) got out and became wild.  Fall 2009, I am walking down to my bow stand on the edge of a field in complete darkness (with a weak flashlight just to see brighteyes and such) and I spot something white In the field.  There is a lightish colored something (who knows, been there forever, its an old stand) at the base of my stand.  I didn't think anything of it.  10 steps later, I stop dead because what sounds like a bulldozer going through the woods charges down the hill away from me.  I didn't have any clue what it was.  Until I got out of my stand after missing a 5 pt buck at 20 yards :'( :'( , my father and I discovered the tracks.  I was actually lucking I didn't turn into a nice flat carpet for those cows to run on ;D .

I was hunting a friends property he had just purchased. I'd never been there he pointed me in the direction. And said, take your climber and set up shop anywhere you want.It was quite a haul back in there. I came to the edge of a swamp. So in the early light I set up in what looked  pretty darn good . I found a tree and climbed. It was more or less a scouting/hunt. As it got lighter I noticed something white out in the swamp and pretty good sized. Couldn't tell what the heck it was? After hunting i decided to investigate. I sloshed through the swamp mud. As i got closer I thought what in the ? Here sits one of those big old 500 lb bath tubs!!?? Who in the heck would go to the effort and how did they get this thing out here? He had no clue either.

On another mtn a friend found a large diameter steel cable running vertically up the hill. we figured it might have been a ski slope at one time.

Sounds like old oil equipment. If you followed it you might have found an old pump house. The hills around where i live have thousands upon thousands of old oil barrels with a 2,000 - 5,000? gallon capacity. A buddy of mine from High school has a camp around where i live and hes got a couple old buildings that were used by the guys drilling for oil. Hes also got the central hub of a drilling rig (not really sure what to call it). It looks like a 40-50 diameter fairs wheel laid on its side sitting on a center spoke. The outside of the wheel is a 1.5 inch thick plate with a bunch of 1 inch rods going to the center spoke. There is all sorts of other equipment around there but there are a ton of cables are rods running in every direction out through the woods from this central spot. I really wish i could have seen that when it was running.

About a quarter of a mile up our hill, I came across an old shallow dug well. It was full of leaves and crap. I have always wondered just what would cause anyone to dig a well up there in the middle of the hill. The only thing I could think of was that maybe someone found a flowing spring and decided to dig it out and wall it up and save it for some reason. Down by the farmhouse they have two dug wells with lots of more handy water, so I haven't got a clue why they went to all that work to develop a water source that was too far away to be of any use.

Sounds like an old spring box. I'm going to try and build a spring box this year at my new place. I have a bunch of springs up on the hill behind the house and i want to have a back up water source and a good supply for the garden.

I have found all sorts of old buildings, cars, and other assorted junk but i think the most interesting stuff has been the old oil equipment.

I woke up one morning and figured I would try out state land. This was my first time on state land and I didnt do any scouting. I parked and went into the woods and just kept walking eventually I found a nice size tree that had fallen so I sat there and moved the leaves aside. as light came I started looking around to see what was around me and I found a black plastic bag about 3 feet to my right. I looked inside and there was a roll of paper towels and a porn magazine...... I chuckled and all I could think of was if I was sitting in some guys happy thoughts.. was in Orange county NY any members here from orange coounty wanna admit to this???? lol

When I was younger probably around 14 years old me and a couple of buddy's were gonna ride our bikes down to the river to go swimming we live in the city the main road we were riding down I called 2 mile creek it use to have a lot of woods I stopped to take a leak. And there was this horrible smell coming from a huge cooler that had a couple of contractor garbage bags in it and an old 22 rusted next to it I was young and decided to take the gun. Home and called the police they came had me show them the spot and I never got to find out what was in the bags lol

Here's another one me aNd a buddy of mine were 19yrs old loved musky fishing so one morning we went and fished off of the international bridge it's in buffalo. We went reAlly early in the morning we were fishing off of the 3 Ed pier out on the bridge when we hear and see this huge/ loud splash we look up and some guy just walked over from the Canadian side and tossed a body over the bridge I don't know if he killed the guy up there or what. But I told my friend to run and call the police this is before everyone had cell phones he told me f you. I'm not going up there lol. So after we didn't see the guy for a few minutes I ran called the police they came with the boats and helicopters and found nothing they to us we were lying Nd going to have to pay for the search 3 days later they found the body noore then 2 miles down stream stuck at strawberry island

I have been to that same exact spot a bunch of years ago. It's along a hiking trail that we took. However I can't tell you what that thing is. It seems to me there were some other parts of these kinds of constructions located there also.

[Five Seasons]

A post i made earlier sparked a memory of a strange hunt I had up North and was wondering if others had similiar encounters.

Here is mine. I hut a 225 acre piece in the northern zone. It is my uncles land. My father and I are the only ones that hunt it....besides the occasional trespasser. 2 weeks into gun season I was still hunting to my Dad (Keep in mind we hunted the entire previous week and I covered some ground that week too). All of a sudden I come across some wrist sized trees cut down by a chain saw. I started looking right away for a stand someone had put up. Since I was in a total hunting mind set, you can imagine my surprise to find myself standing in a PVC netted enclosure with miracle grow cartons strewn around the place. Now I am just a redneck kid and must hae not gotten out much growing up but It took me about 10 minutes to realize I was standing in the middle of a harvested pot field. There were probably 70 -80 plants in there all about 3 feet high that had had the tops already cut off. I have no idea how long it had been since they were harvested but I got a cold shiver thinking what might have happened if I had gotten up there for some early season scouting---which I hadn't that year. I came across 2 other areas all set up the same on that property. probably about 200 plants or so. I went and saw my uncle and he calle dthe cops and they came out that night and asked me to show them the area in the morning. They were a little surprised at the size of the operation. and suggested the next year if we scouted we may want to carry during our scouting. I know nothing about this but the cops said they would have estimated, from what they saw, that is could have been a $200,000 crop. Spooky crap!!

crazy, but i bet you'd only run into teens and not the mexican drug cartel up here. you guys calling the cops is just mean

craziest I guess for me is an old farming dump site. Big pile of rock and just tons of glass bottles, metal and porcelain stuff all in a pile. Leftover from the days it was farmed. Coolest thing I found in there was an old 6 shooter in real rough shape. I was maybe 9 or 10 and when I picked it up, a bunch of ants had made a nest inside, so it skeaved me out and i let it lie.

I also got permission to hunt some land in Alden and during scouting found a dump pile with about 20 out of season deer carcases. I assumed nuisance permits and only ever turkey hunted it.

i gotta admit the story is creepy, but thinking you were going to shoot at someone because they were a native american had me stumped haha.

you hear the stories all the time in the news though. "hikers/hunter finds body" people who dump bodies in the woods I think believe nobody goes in the woods. haha.

The upper torso part of a female mannequin with painted on make up, bullet holes, and all kinds of nasty things written on her with sharpie marker. Found on state land near richford / lisle ny. Her name is apparently Shelby. Dont know how or why she ended up way out there, or what kind of DNA samples may be present on her, but she is now part of a friends garage decor. We told him just to leave it there, but that only encouraged him to take her. Seeing her in the garage is pretty creepy, but it always reminds us of that hunt.

When I was 18-19 years old I was deer hunting, open hardwoods with no fishable water anywhere. I found a fishing rod & reel, a small tackle box, full of lures, and a folding chair all leaning against a tree. If I had to guess, someone was on an ATV ride, with the gear on their machine, and decided to lighten the load. The stuff was still there two days later so.....Mines.. Still got the reel and chair.

Oddest thing, I ever saw in the woods was when I was hunting a small patch of state land in Putnam county some 20 years ago. I’m 30 feet up a tree watching a trail, when I see two young lovers holding hands and being very affectionate towards each other. As they get directly under my stand, I realize that it’s two dudes.
