DirtTime
My current stand is a Bone Collector Deluxe. Bought that due to the land I was hunting last year. It's heavy and hard to set up alone Thinking about a climber..... What do you prefer? A permenant stand you build? Climber? Hanger? BKhunter
I have both...Since I mostly hunt private land I prefer the permanent...Walk in with less gear and quieter and climb right up. Makes life easy.
Doc
I prefer a ground blind pulled together with natural local materials. I have been down out of the trees for a couple of decades now.
crappyice
I love the climbers even though its noisy getting set up. Flexibility is a huge benefit especially when hunting numerous properties that are pretty far from home- lots of flash scouting then hunting

Flexibility is a huge benefit especially when hunting numerous properties that are pretty far from home- lots of flash scouting then hunting This is my thinking as well. I will be hunting three areas this season, maybe 4. I think the versatility may help. No ladder to haul, is a big plus for me. Three of the areas are either State or Public land. My NZ area is private, and I actually think I could put a couple perm stands in there if I ask real nice and give more 'nanner bread this X-Mas. Using the climber and my other stand as back-ups. Oh!....Just to add this... No I would not build a blind or stand this time of year. I would do it right as the weather breaks in late winter, so the deer have time to adjust. greensider
i have lived in an api grand stand climber for a long time and love it but last year i got a nice ladder stand and it is so nice to walk in the woods and just get in it if the situation allows it i would now prefer a ladder maybe because i am getting older
Red
I prefer a hang on with a large seat and platform. My summit open shot is extremely comfy but it's so nice to go into the woods and already have a stand in place and walk up and sit
Nomad
I prefer a stand that is where the big bucks are ! I have many ladder stands a bunch of hang ons,and a Lone Wolf climber. More and more I'm liking ladder stands, easy to set up and move, easy to get into. I'm liking screw in steps less and less for my hand ons and buying Lone Wolf climbing sticks here and there to replace them.
Lawdwaz
I use all but a ground blind.......hang on (Screaming Eagle's) climber (Treewalker) and misc shop built ladder stands. Once in a while I will, if the weather is THAT bad go into a little 4x4 hut.
DirtTime
My BC, its great. It's huge, and the seat is wide and comfy. It just takes to much to set up in the dark, then take it down in the dark on public land day to day. I have never done that with this stand. But, I know last year, it took me an hour to have set right by myself. Set up on Friday afternoon, hunted Sat. all day, even ate my lunch in it, and Sun. morning. It's good to see what people like. I think I really need a climber, for at least this season. Maybe I can get a few nice perms on my NZ spot this spring. It would be nice just to get in, and relax. Heck, if the owner allows it I might make a tree "house". Hunt the day and evening, and sleep right in that baby. lol
growalot
I really like my built stands and enclosed blinds...I have a bunch of room to sit and stand and move around when needed...but when winds are really moving I head to the ladder stands...calm days or perfect winds the ground blinds I build they are huge. jjb4900
I don't think there's much debating that a permanent or semi permanent stand is better as long as you don't have to worry about it being stolen, climbers definitely have an advantage for mobility. Kaptag
Over the years I have used permanent stands, some ground blinds made with brush, ladder stands, hang on stands and climbers. Each one has it's advantages. If I owned my own land I would have permanent stands made and when I hunted my dad's land that's what I used. However, for a land owner, in my opinion a ladder stand cannot be beat. It may not be as easily moved as a hang on or a climber but it can be moved without much difficulty and is nice to be able to walk into the woods without having to set it up. I have used the hang on type and honestly I like the stability of them but I don't like hanging them. They are not that easy to hang up. I would consider them more like a permanent stand. I currently own 2 climbers. The 1st one I'm not sure but I think is an Ol Man Climber which I've had for several years. It works extremely well. In the spring I purchased a Summit MLB Specialist climber for bow hunting. I don't recommend this climber for a 1st time user as it does NOT have a shooting rest you can sit on when climbing. You really should be an experienced climber to use this (Summit MLB Specialist) stand. I used it for the 1st time this past weekend and it worked well for what I bought it for. Given a bad situation with my parents I now hunt public land only (I don't know anyone) so for me I have to be mobile and the climber, in my opinion, is the best way for me to try out new hunting areas. Trust me at 53 yo's I'd rather not be carrying a tree stand on my back but it's what life has dealt me and I accept it because I want to hunt. As a small piece of advice: Climbers go against your natural movements and you have to train your body to use them. That being said, once your body gets used to it, they are quite easy to use and the big the advantage is they are portable! Best of luck in your coming hunts. If you don't mind me askin, how is it different? I have never used one, but I have held a light many years ago for a friend that did. Looked pretty straight forward. Just slow and easy. Maybe climbers mean something different these days. I am not being a wise guy here, I am honestly curious. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aluminum-Climbing-Tree-Stand/36545658 Set it, slowly move your upper body, then bring up your feet, and repeat this process till you are at your desired height. Many things have changed since I hunted with a bow last, or used a stand. I ask so I can learn and get things back in my head for bow hunting the right way. Cabin Fever
With my kids hunting with me now, I feel a lot better with them using ladderstands. I feel more comfortable in them too. Starting my transition to all ladderstands. I do feel that they stick out and are more noticeable than hang ons, but I've seen some great looking camo jobs that brush them in well. DirtTime
LOL! Got ya. Dont use AC on my phone, the lile woman once called me a d!ck using it on hers. She was trying to ask if I "picked" up the stuff for tacos. Now that I think abut it..I think she did call me a .............. Anyways. I know thay are loud, but my primary area is loud anyway. Trains, roads, houses, so the noise won't, or shouldn't be a big factor. My SZ area 1, yep! Pretty quiet in them woods, even for state land. If, I decide to head out to Pecks Lake, that's pretty niosy as well. Just hope the NG aren't on menouvers that weekend. That will suck! The NZ, for this season, I think I need it there too. Just so I can set up on the fly when my buddy isn't chasing a woman he ain't ever gonna get, and let me hunt the land. Simply puts it's like learning to ride a bike. The first couple times is unnerving and your body naturally resists the movements. Watching someone use a climber that has done it before will NOT expose this (because they are comfortable with it) until you try it yourself. Like I said in my post I'm 53 yo and I taught a 30 yo how to use one this past weekend. I can scurry up a tree pretty quickly with a climber but I've been doing it for years. As for the 30 yo . . . he was sweating profusely after only going up about 8 feet. Practice makes it easy. . . All I can tell you is that I love using my climber due to the portability but it's certainly something you need to get used to. There is a knack to it (but it's learned quickly). TrophyHunter33
I like hang on stands with climbing sticks the best. I do have some ladder stands and I like those as well. I have one climber that I set up like a hang on stand and I bought climbing sticks to get into it. that is my favorite stand because the platform is huge and I can adjust the height of my seat so I can sit like in a lazyboy!!! Pygmy
I'm too old, fat, and uncoordinated to safely do hang ons and climbers anymore. Over the years I spent lots of time in them. I'm a ladder stand guy now, when I use a treestand. Actually, I spend most of my time on the ground now. I've shot lots of deer just leaning against a tree or sitting on a handy deadfall. My favorite stand the last few years has been 3 big round haybales placed in a triangle. I sit on a folding stool inside the blind and have handy gun rests all around. growalot
I use to love my climbers...in fact I got my first one because of an accident and a badly broken leg.I could not climb a ladder at all .I was still in a walking cast come hunting season..so I got a climber and shot deer. Now I'm afraid of the trees them selves, not the climbing so they had been put away. Edited October 16, 2014 by growalot
