G-Man
So walking and reposting a piece of property a friend owns (he doesn't hunt)and gave me permission to. And not 30 yards off the line is a ladder stand on adjoining property ( really I have no problem even if it a ft off the line) The problem is 20 yards from stand to the left is a spin feeder filled with corn, and 20 yrds to the right of the stand is a 55 gallon drum with a 6 in hole cut out of it chained to a tree! (I am assuming bear bait barrel) this was all visable from property line, and I didn't go look closer as I'm sure cameras are set up somewhere as well... I know what I did, what would you do??? Skillet
Maybe leave him a note? Give him a chance to remove the stuff. That way there shouldn't be as hard of feelings against your friend as there would be if you nark him out. That's just me though.
Doc
To me this doesn't fit into one of those "Whoops!" categories. His breaking of the law is blatant and intentional and shows an attitude of total disregard for any conservation law. It is time to take a few pictures and email them to the DEC with location info. If you can supply GPS coordinates, so much the better. Let them do with that info whatever they wish. Setting that all up where he did is a blatant disregard for having put you in this uncomfortable position. That alone would piss me off. Oh, one other thing. Be sure to touch base with your landowner friend because any action will reflect on him and he may or may not want to get involved or may want to try a more neighborly reaction.
growalot
I have a feeling I know what you did and thumbs up!
grampy
Being that it's a friends property, my reaction would be quite a bit different than if it was my property. I would ask your friend if he is friendly with the neighbor. If he is, perhaps a talk explaining what you found will work and ward off hard feelings between them. Maybe the landowner himself doesn't even know, it could be a relative hunting the property. That's the nice guy approach. Since this garbage is on their land, you don't want to trespass to leave a note or take it down. But a 4' x 4' white sign with blaze orange, WTH, or something to that effect, facing the mess, might get his attention. Or call the guy and tell him he has one week to get rid of it or DEC will be involved. That's the not so nice approach. Take pictures and get the gps and call DEC and let the chips fall where they may. Or call to ask him if he is going poaching this season! And his feeders are now full of holes. That's the take no prisoners approach. Speaking only for myself, I would work my way down the list until the crap was gone.

X2. yep, not the original posters land.
Jeremy K
Same thing I did when I found someone else's hunting spot at my buddy's house. I told him about it before I did anything and let him handle it.
ants
If you know for sure that he has cameras around his bait stand, then stroll over with a camera and make sure he gets shots of you taking photos of his illegal set up. I don't think you have to worry about him yelling trespass .
Pygmy
Since you are a guest on another person's land, I would inform him of the situation...IF he gives you approval, then do whatever your conscience tells you.. I wouldn't jeapordize a landowners relationship with his neighbor without clearing it with him first.
NFA-ADK
Demand his first born be put up for sacrifice! I would do the same as Jeremy K and see how the guy who owns the property wants it handled. Then post GPS position on this forum and let everyone call it in. Then inform the neighbor that the PETA guys posted your position on www.huntingny.com!
Larry
From what you are saying the bait would be close enough to you. that you would be at risk of also being arrested for hunting over bait. If you hunted anywhere near there CYA man. I would call the DEC. the guy would just move it somewhere else and he may have more bait stands on the property. If you use tip DEC no one would know. So I would not even say anything to the guy remember this guy is making us all look bad.
moog5050
I would check to see if there are any donuts in that drum. I love donuts.
Pygmy
Donuts ? Can't be the guy is a cop...he'd be eating the bait... A friend of mine ran a bear hunting camp in Maine...Many of his customers were policemen from Philadelphia, and he used day old donuts for bait.. He put signs in his treestands..." Please don't eat the bait"....

Five Seasons
Speak to my friend whose land I'm hunting. It's his neighbor and his call in my opinion.
moog5050
Seriously, how funny would it be if he got you on cam taking donuts from the drum, maybe with a waive and a steaming cup of coffee. Better yet, throw on a Yogi costume when you do it. BTW - I agree with others that you should leave it up to the landowner.
