[Five Seasons]

Went out Saturday in the poring rain but I had a bachelor party that night and knew Sunday was going to be out. Didn't want to pass up the whole weekend. Decided I could do a chair blind hunt near the fields. What a waste. One or 2 lone gobbles off in the distance and no sightings. It was cold, wet and very non-turkey woods like.

I subscribe to the fact that you can't kill them in bed, but there's something disheartening about getting up at 4 on your day off and being cold and miserable to "maybe" shoot a turkey haha.

Great morning but no Toms lots of deer and some great pics and ...lets see if this works...a video

Before anyone asks..yellow is dead grass and weeds I sprayed this a couple of weeks ago...the white cup...lets me know there is a cam there if I have a bird in sight... BTW water in puddles and the wheel barrel had ice covering it this morning it's cold out there!

So hens came in at first light, no toms ,about 8a.m. they look to be headed either across to the house side of road or down the hill..I may have spooked a turkey behind me...I don't think crow wings would make that loud a sound taking off...probably the Tom from neighbors above me ,where the hens went yesterday. That would figure...don't care...... it was a great and educational morning. Hens came in from opposite directions and one had to have been at the farmers field first ...she was soaked. The other I know had roosted near by. I heard her and she was bone dry. I know where the deer are coming off the neighbors and where they are walking to go over my ridge. I know that if I want to crow hunt I had best just leave that blind up. they love the clover plots and soon the mulberries will be growing. I can really move around in that blind with them all 10 yrds away and they are clueless This is good practice for deer season..though the adult deer saw the decoys and skirted the area before the hens showed up.

Those are the types of encounters that it is almost impossible to explain to people that don't hunt or don't spend time in the woods...    Puts a smile on your face and makes you wonder what that young deer and turkey were thinking.   thx for sharing

That decoy was 12 yards from the blind...so much fun!  Of course no card in that cam on the tree in front of blind.

Wasn't it funny how he approached that decoy squinting his eyes...Makes me think it's caught a wing feather or two to the eyes..lol

Spotted a flock acrossed the road on the backside of one of my spots so I decided to go around and try to wait them out where I can hunt. Well I didn't wait long enough because when I circle back around at 10 they were in the bar way I had been through 30 mins before. So I went back in again but never caught up to them. Very skiddish birds leads me to believe they have been hunted and harassed. Also it was dang windy making hearing impossible for me. Not bad for a first official trip out.

Well, I just had the best Turkey hunt for some years now.

I did not go out early, probably hit my spot a little after 8, but as I was walking in I heard a gobble close by. Good start. I got my 3 decoys set up and settled into my brush blind, see the pic below. I waggled my gobbler tube and used the mouth call. Got a couple of immediate responses and then nothing for a while. I called a little longer and then stopped. About 15 minutes later more gobbles and clucking heading my way. 3 Jakes came in. One was a good deal bigger than the other two. The decoys did not spook them, but also they felt no need to come in for a closer look. They seemed comfortable tho and scratched around about 50 yards off. I lost sight of one, then heard one of those sonar like navigation calls they do to let the others know where they are. He had gone around and come up behind me. I slowly turned against the log I was lying against and watched him get closer. I pulled the gun up and placed the sites over a clear spot between branches. It was about 30 yards and I felt comfortable with the distance. The gun goes off and the bigger bird just kinda walks back confusedly in the direction he came from. I expected him to drop after a few steps. Nope....he kept on walking, not too fast but he wasn't hanging around. I was sure I had connected and so stalked after him to finish the job. He got clean away. I looked around for some time to make sure he wasn't pilled up behind anything. Couldn't find him. I went back to the kill zone. I must have gone too far in front or behind his head. There was a tree right behind him however. It was peppered with tight shot at the correct height. Couldn't  believe he walked away from it. One lucky bird. Pick of the tree below

Went back with binoculars to CSI the scene of the great Turkey Escape of 2017. It was a downhill shot. Looks like I was a touch high and gave him a hair cut. Branches an what not made a second attempt impossible. I know for sure the nitro load is good at that distance tho.

Well I went to check out the beard length and the beard measured out to 10.5 inches while the right spur measured out to 1.31" and the left measured to 1.19". Not sure whats considered a big bird, but hes pretty damn big to me and definitely my best bird yet.

Black Creek Marsh first and then Kier. Both have birds in and around the area ( more so BCM ), plenty of AGF's around as well. Did plenty of road glassing and getting in looking for scrapes and scat, have not roosted them as I rarely bother trying on public land. It does work, but to my personal experience most times they aren't in the spot you left them in the night before.

That's definitely a nice bird. At least 3 yrs old with hooks as long as those.  

I've got one I'm watching with some fantastic hooks. Hopefully I'll get a crack at him.

I call " shotgun " ?! 

Going to try to and get closer to the dominant birds living room in the morning. Not much room to play as I don't have permission to hunt where he roosts. Maybe the mere 75 yards pans out. We shall see. Be reporting in the morning

32 and frosty....headed out for a walk to Rivers blind this morning...hunting high over a couple of decoys...good luck to those headed out and stay warm...no black flies for the last few hunts sweet! Hope this cold killed them off...

Well sure. I sneak in extra quiet getting as close to where birds generally roost and they're gobbling on roost 1/2 mile away now. What a perfect day out here , no rain and no wind. Came in light today , no dekes and only the necessities

Hen wood duck just landed in tree next to me. I suspected she is nested up here as pair would fly in and only he would fly back over. He escorts her in each day. Ducklings have a mile plus waddle to the creek. These 2 boys just came to visit. Birds now ripping at bottom of hill. Time to play.

Watching both wood ducks in tree about 40 feet away now. Ole Tom meandering up hill. Doe and 2 fawns in front of me now.
