Anyone here use Trace Mineral Salt

I have used it for 2 seasons, for a few reasons.  First to supplement the deer and second to for camera pics to see what kind of bucks visit my property.  The doe and fawns seem to love it as well and from everything I have read it's really good for lactating does and it helps boost fawn growth as well plus it's helps in antler development.

One of the guys that I hunt with started putting out water softener salt pellets, an outfitter recomended it. My buddy put out 4 bags and when he checked it in a few weeks it was gone. He put it on sloping ground and the salt seeped down hill, the deer dug a ditch about 30 feet long, I think he said the deer dug deeper further away from the pile. I'm sure it doesn't have the benefits that the trace salt has, but it sure attracts them, he pulled a few good pics from it. And this is in Ohio, it's legal.

How do you use the stuff?

Seems like it would fall under the baiting law in NY unless you can till into the ground and then plant a food plot which seems like a good idea from a novice.

Its pretty obvious how hes using it.

That's how I use mine. Throw it on the ground, Till it in with my boot,Throw some wild seed on it and hang a camera. Some of that sticky stuff really hangs on the boots!

Hey you never know lol. 

I could definitely see some using it mixed in with fertilizer as a soil additive.

Even in Ma. we can put out food, supplements, attractants up to 2 weeks before the season... Always thought it was odd for NY to make it illegal... so thank God for farmers crops!!! LOL

When I bought my place seven years ago there was a spot in my woods that was completely torn up by animals. I knew what it was, but after talking to neighbors they confirmed that the previous owner had set out salt and mineral licks for many years prior to my purchase. Is it considered unethical if I hunt near those "legacy" salt licks? I only have an acre of woods, so it's not like I can just move to another part of the property. What do you think?

Slightly unrelated but anyone ever see natural mineral licks? We used to have 2 spots on the property growing up and for whatever reason the deer would dig up the dirt and eat it. (No it wasn't a man made mineral lick and they certainly weren't scrapes). I used to put cameras over them and every year they'd come back in the spring and dig in it again. Kinda neat.

To be clear here - I spread it over an area of soil with a broadcaster and lightly till it in over an area.

Never said anything about hunting over it... never have, never will. Mixing some trace minerals into some soil doe not constitute baiting.

Well if it makes the deer try to eat the soil it's in or on that would be baiting actually. It doesn't matter if you hunt it or not.

I don't agree with the law anymore honestly nor do I care if some one does it. I won't do it but I might try it if it were legal. 

My thought was if it is added yearly perhaps it would grow into the vegetation grown in it and pass on to the deer eating it.
