Don't See This Much Anymore.......

Wife and I were in Wellsboro PA for an evening recently and the next morning we went for breakfast.  On our way out after a nice western omelet and bacon I found this strange looking thing screwed to the wall, a pay phone!!

To think of all the many hundreds of calls I made on one of these things over the years when I had my business and before cell phones!!  Heck I remember hunting out west and dying to find a pay phone to check in with the family and my secretary back in the old days.  :)

Remember the "calling cards" from ATT, MCI etc?  They were (for you youngsters) for making toll calls (look it up kids) out of the area.

Sometimes pay phones were used to call a friend to get a ride home after you couldn't find your car on a drunken Friday or Saturday night.

Good memories.......

Gives me goosebumps...!!  Also loved " Cover of the Rolling Stone "

I also remember a line from the " Freaker's Ball" by Dr Hook...

"BLACK ones, WHITE ones, yellow ones, red ones, NECROPHILIACS lookin' for the dead ones".... Hehehehe...

You could never destroy one of those things. I remember smashing them as hard as I could when I'd get pissed off on the phone. Not once did it ever show much damage. More stuff should be made like an old fashioned payphone

I'm going WAY out on a limb and say pygmy has a story................ :)

Sorry to disappoint, Larry, but most of my memories are from  restroom graffiti..

A few of my favorites ( over the trench style urinal)….

" Stand closer...That's not a WINCHESTER you're holding"

"Please don't piss on the floor...The janitor has holes in his shoes"

" Don't throw cigarette butts in the urinal.. It makes them soggy and hard to light"....

If it would have been a rotary  dial now that would have been something. Wellsboro is a nice little p.a. town.

My brother works in a metal fabrication factory that specialized in phone booths. When they started getting rid of them the business almost folded. Thank goodness for him he had enough time there he didn't lose his job. Now they just do small contracts.  I can remember when we would be out somewhere he would look underneath the phone booth to see if his company made it.

The best I have ever seen was in one of my dad's warehouses's bathroom stalls. "They paint these walls to hide my pen, but the shithouse poet strikes again." It was really quite artistic

How about the fake “collect call” and cram message into the voice recording, “call from...pick up at train!” Do you accept the charge? “No!” And then my mom would be at the train 10 min later.

Yup. I did that from school everyday after sports practices. “Mom pick me up”
