Shooting a deer behind a fence is like paying for sex; yeah you bagged one but it still doesn't mean you have skills.5 points

bowshotmuzzleloader go back and read post number 31. There is all the legality NY state has put in place for all hunters to follow. Pretty simple. That right there is what is legal and what isnt. There is absolutely no debate its law. Its legal. What is so confusing? It also states the exact reasons why a bait pile is illegal and why a food plot is not. To question the moral values of us food plotters and the legal practice of us spending our time and money to put them in place has no bearing on what you are expressing. There are far more reasons than what you have in your head as to why we do them. The picture you and others have painted in your minds is farther from the actual most all of our reasonings are. Its just another one of those false premisses that TV hunting shows have put in peoples minds. It just isnt the way it is in reality, yes they shoot deer over those plots on TV but tell me exactly how many of them advertise come er deer, and the million other baits they sell. Bet you cant find one show that does not promote them. The point is they are most likely using both food plots and attractants to entice that deer under there stands, and not to mention they wrapped up a whole season of hunting in 30 minutes. You think they just climbed up in a stand and shot a whopper buck in 10 minutes? One other reason I have not seen mention is its a fun way to get to know the deer in your area as well. Like I said I dont hunt my plots nor trails leading into them. Its a basic sancturary and alot of guys feel the same way. But one thing I will tell you is I would of never gotten a picture like these. And due note the time on the camera, why? because that is the time that these plots are vastly used and Im sleeping. Best of luck to you this hunting season and hope you find some peace with this debate you are having with yourself and the legality of food plots.2 points

Not sure why we are debating something that is clearly legal in the game laws. If you don't like it dont do it. Plain and simple.2 points

Heading up tonight after work to meet my brother at the cabin. Really excited this year, we have some nice ones in the area. I did not get to spend the pre-season time I wanted to up there this year because of work and family obligations, however, I still think we should have a good time. We moved a few stands this year, not all of them, and not all of them to the places I wanted (time). Bow is locked in, and confident with my pin setup. Nothing really changed from last year other then some new arrows. Lots of bear on the property again this year, perhaps we will see one during the season. Hoping my brother can knock down his first bow kill this year as well. My goal is to knock down nice doe early, then concentrate on looking for a buck. Last year I did the opposite and ended up with no deer. I'll post some updates time permitting over the next few days!1 point

I have been reading for a long time and finally decided to sign on. I am from Oneonta and have been an outdoorsman as long as I can remember. I grew up in a hunting family, and consider myself very lucky that I had a father that passed on his love of hunting and the outdoors in general. I mostly just hunt for deer now because of work and family commitments. I absolutely love bowhunting and I do still gun hunt because of the the comraderie with friends. I also enjoy camping and do quite a bit of walleye fishing in the spring and early summer. I am not on here to argue or be a know-it-all. I have quite a bit of knowledge and like all others, i have an opinion. I will not post just to contradict someone, but sometimes i will write my personal opinion in a respectful way.1 point

The point is that Romeny won the debate hands down. Chris Mathews and even Bill Mahre had to admit to that today. No point in getting into who lies the most....B.O. got Shhhpanked1 point

No problem Rev Ev, I just wanted to make sure that anyone that came across this and read it had some information about how to approach Lyme. I'd hate to see someone not get taken care of, as this disease can either be very mild or really kick your butt, and no one knows how they will react! It's a reall pain because it seems almost random how it effect different people. Back when I was diagnosed 18 years ago, there wasn't a whole lot of information about this as it was still a fairly new disease. My dad had only heard about it from-- you guessed-- hunting magazines and so recognized the bulls-eye rash when I was young and was bitten. I was taken to the ER and was treated by a Lyme-ignorant staff (not really their fault, not mad with them or anything) and long story short I wasn't given the proper dose or length of antibiotics (according to today's findings).1 point

Yes they would have recognized it as unusable.. as for CWD... there has only been two known cases ever in NY and both were captive deer.. so I doubt highly that it has CWD...1 point

How about we close this up, honestly its not open to debate anyhow, and this thread does nothing positive for the site. Jetmec, if youd like to plead a case, you should do so in a PM to the site owner or a moderator.1 point

I find carrying a bow to be very awkward in comparison to a gun. NO way will I walk with a knocked arrow. I walked up on a buck two years ago and had plenty of time to knock an arrow. Just way too easy to trip when walking in the woods and I don't think it would be very hard at all to get stabbed with that broadhead if you were to go down. I for one would feel a lot more safe walking with a loaded gun with the safety on in comparison.1 point

When I walked down to to woods around 11 am I had an arrow nocked . And of course I wouldn't do this in the dark > If it was dark , it wouldn't be legal shooting time anyway .1 point

have you ever hunted where there are food plots? I mean food plots not pretending an agricultural field is not a food plot? I doubt half of what I plant gets eaten. Have you ever hunted in the northern zone in particular the adirondacks? When I was younger, I did and still do. If you saw two deer a season that was good. I do not travel to where the deer are plentiful. I make my own plentiful deer. If the local herd of deer eat 5 or 6 acres of food upsets the natural balance, it was pretty fragile to start with. I mean it is not even feasible when next to me there is well over 700 acres of corn and alfalfa they feed on all summer and early fall. The small part my plots add to it is minute at best. I get three tagsa year my buck tag a bow muzzle either sex and a bow muzzle antlerless. No dmp's no nuisance permits. So when regular season opens, I have one tag for one buck. How dare I try to get a nice one.1 point

But the funny thing is that some of the normal home-spun food plotters are spending fortunes on farm equipment too. How much do one of those Kubota 4-wheel drive tractors go for. I know of a couple of guys locally that have bought those brand spanking new.....ouch! Plows, discs, drags, seeders, etc., etc. believe me I have done the same thing (for different reasons). Well, I was operating with an old 1950 8N and an old tricycle style Case and not anything that was brand new, but I had a full line of tilling equipment and even way back then and buying everything as broken down used stuff, it was no cheap thing. I'll tell you when I was on one of those tractors plowing or discing or whatever .... it was a great feeling! It was all fun and if there had been anyway that I could have bought a brand new tractor, nothing would have stopped me. So, I understand all of it, and maybe more than most because it did take me back to my youth on our farm, and the activities that I was always involved in. But like a lot of guys, it all eventually got replaced by more practical items. Yeah, those guys on TV can probably justify it with actual money that they are making from their commercial hunting operations. But a lot of guys who get into these food plots are spending a lot of cash as well. And most of them aren't making a dime, and it is all cash out the door. So for them it is a lot easier to justify shutting down the food plot operations when the time comes. And I have to believe that it does leave a heck of hole in the local habitat.1 point

5.9cummings "Your a lucky man. I have a great respect for all artists but his work really hits home for me. Hes one of the few people / artists that i would truly like to meet" I've been friends with Tom since about 1986. We hunted out west (Colorado & Wyoming) a bunch of years back in the late 80's and early 90's. He has let me hunt his property since he bought it in '87. I don't bow hunt it, only some gun and LOTS of spring turkey. This deer in this picture I killed at his place during the late ML season a bunch of years ago. I went and got Tom and told him to bring his camera because I new that the conditions were perfect for some great subject photos for reference for a painting or three. I think one of them from this buck even made it to the cover of Traditioal Bowhunter Magazine. Although the guy in the painting wasn't holding a ML, NOW he had a recurve!!1 point

I posted this in another thread, but I figured it can't hurt to add it to the official Bow Hunting harvest thread. Yesterday morning I realized one of the biggest lessons ... preparation pays off. Last year I spent countless days in the woods without even seeing a deer. I did no pre scouting and in turn, spent many an hour sitting against a tree just 'hoping' a deer would wander by. I made sure I had things in order this year. Working to gain access to some private land, putting trail cameras out, scouting for deer trail/sign, and practicing every single night with my bow. This morning it all paid off. Was hunting a small piece of semi-private land in Rockland county this morning. I was about 3/4 of the way up a hill, working the edge of a hedgerow where the deer had worn a trail through. The trail cameras gave me a good idea how many deer were coming through. At 8 a.m. I started to hear some activity off to my left in the hedgerow. I had been waiting there since 5:30, trying to catch them coming out of their bedding area. A four point buck stepped out along the deer path and began working his way to my stand. He stepped out, I gave a quick grunt to stop him and let the arrow go. He had just started to turn towards me when I shot, so what I thought was a perfect broadside shot, turned in to a quartering-towards shot. Arrow hit right behind his front leg, right on my mark, and exited out his side, taking the liver on the way out. He ran for about a 100 yards and I heard the big crash. When I recovered him I was afraid the arrow had exited too far back, but there was no gut whatsoever in the cavity. Certainly not a trophy class buck, but it's my first bow kill and my first buck! Hit this one last night a little too far back, so came back this morning to find her.1 point

So this afternoon I saw 12 doe. The only one that wasnt running or trotting was the one I took. We figure her for @ 2 1/2, as she had milk. She came in broadside at 20 yards, and I zipped it her right through both shoulders. The arrow then stuck @ 8 inches into the dirt. Broadhead just needs a once over and Ill use it again. I love these Montecs! This is the same arrow I took my buck with last year! Hopefully I can get nother one with it this year! Shes already quartered up and in the fridge waiting for me to cut her up this week. This is the first time I have put one down on any opening day!1 point

The new bow has officially been broken in!!! This doe came out with two buttonbucks at very last light and I sent a Rocket Steelhead through her lungs @ 20yds. I had 5 bucks feeding out in the adjacent cornfield that was just chopped a few days ago. One was a 3.5 year old 8-pt that is definately on the hit-list. Think I'm gonna take the morning off from hunting to hang a stand where all of the bucks came out tonight... I shot her standing right about here...1 point

Posted this in the local Long Island forum but wanted to post on the official harvest thread as well....Was out on public land today. At 7am I saw the biggest buck I have ever seen in my young hunting career. This thing was massive but it was on the run and had no chance at it. At 10:30am a nice doe came by and now I have plenty of meat for my freezer which I am so so so happy about. Was my 2nd deer ever with a bow and my first doe with a bow. Best of luck to everyone!1 point
