  1. DEC just left with the deer on a rack, the guys shotgun in a case and my neighbor in the back seat. No hunting license and doesn't even own a ML. Deer was hit three times in the guts. Glad I didn't have to dress it out. Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2

  4. Kludes; I see your cable and it is obvious it pulled out the stake of a drowning set. Coons can climb on a thread of a vine, even with one foot in a trap as you learned. If you set a muskrat trap, you should always stake for coon. These days you should stake for coyotes actually. Incidents happen in trapping, hunting, and driving cars. BUT: the public majority does not accept incidents from trapping and hunting. It creates opposition in most nuetral people and is used as ammo by hard wired antis. As someone who writes a lot of letters and public comment in defense of our sports, a picture like that is just creating work for me.

  5. It just tells me 56 million people like a free ride is all. You know why Romney lost this election? Pretty simple as soon as he said in his campaign "I will put americans back to work" 51% of the population said FOCK that!

  6. Absolutely NOT just a rifle problem. I can tell you with 100% certainty this happens all the time in slug country as well. I see a lot of this especially around field edges and the surrounding woods a few hundred yds in. My guess is that many of these field deer get shot, and with the lack of landmarks in a field setting, often the exact spot the deer was standing is incorrect leading to no sign of a hit or the wrong spot entirely to begin taking up a trail. Alot of dead deer I find in the closest thickets off the fields where there are stands or blinds on the edge. Heck, many of them die right out in the open woods which really makes you wonder how that deer went unrecovered. The wrong starting point to a bloodtrail is the most likely culprit I can think of.

  7. Went out with crossbow yesterday. Hunted the private 8 acres I have access to in Putnam County (3N). Didn't see anything. Covered a lot of ground. Was there 620am-11:30am. Went to Lockwood DEP land from 12pm-dark. What a disaster, people everywhere. Saw 2 guys target shooting with a handgun. I didn't call the DEP police, because they were just off the DEP land on private property, but annoying nonetheless. Decided to sit close to houses in some really heavy stuff and figuring thats where deer hang out to be safe. Did a doe bleat call at 2pm and 2 big deer popped up 60-70yards from me and took off. Couldn't get a look at their heads, but they weren't fawns. Will be out Saturday & Sunday. Not sure where yet. Might have a chance to hunt a food plot Sunday from a treestand with my brother's friend. We'll see if it happens.

  10. Funny how the little extra in cooking help the flavor. This weekend we had wild rice, almonds and cranberries mixed with venison. When you got a cranberry and some venison together it was wonderful! Give it a try.

  11. The Destroyers in .177 is not a bad pellet, especially for the price. I've herd some bad reviews on the .22 however. The Crosman Premier HP and Domes are indeed very good pellets for the money in .22, but I wouldn't use them in .177. For the price of the Beeman Kodiaks, you can get the H&N Barracudas for the same price, and can choose from 3 different head sizes to match your barrel. In either case, it all depends on what the shooter expects from the airgun. I have pellets that are as cheap as dirt, and some that cost much more than 22LR rounds.

  13. I'm fortunate in that most stands I put in.... end up being that killer stand....unfortunate enough in that even with putting a cluster of stands to cover winds and cut offs....They manage to...either bed directly under them walk under the wrong stand as I watch...or come past after hours...once in a while though I'm able to connect on one not running a doe and just cruising by........which is why I have 36 stands...lol

  15. Another good option, is to bring a small camcorder out with you. If you are on stand and he does this crap again, record it and then give it to the state police, DEC, etc. Again though, all considerations need to be accounted for. What is the long-term scenario likely to be? How much acreage are we talking about, too.

  16. If I were going out (and I'm not), I think I would get back to the trails leading to the current food sources. So far this late season has been absolutely dead quiet. I haven't heard a shot since regular season ended. The state parking lots are almost completely deserted. There is no indication that there even is a season open. So my guess would be that deer should be starting to move back into their pre-season patterns. The 5 deer on my front lawn the other day during legal shooting hours also indicates that.

  17. I had to laugh when I opened up the latest issue of New York Outdoor News and found an article on this exact topic. That has happened before on a lot of other hot topics on this forum. It almost seems like they monitor this site to get ideas for their articles .... lol.

  18. Speaking from 35 years of rifle hunting, it is not the rifle. Get to the range get good with the gun as mentioned. If you are placing high lung hits, there is a bit before you will see blood as the cavity needs to fill up. As far as having enough rife, and brace yourselves, I have seen more and quicker recoveries with lighter faster bullets. I use a 25-06 with 115 grain bullets. Fast flat and hit hard. The other thing you should do is learn to track. There are more signs than blood on the ground to look for. Look on saplings, as they brush against things as the run. Also look a little higher too. If a deer is bleeding through the nose, it will spray, and you will find it at nose level. And my last thing, when a deer is hit and runs, sit down and wait a while. If you go right after it, you will chase it. Most times if they are hit hard, they do not go far and lie down. The more you chase, the further they will go. I could not imagine giving up if I did not see blood in 100 yards. OOPS one more thing. Watch how the deer reacts when you shoot it. How did it respond, when it took off was the tail up or down, was it running like it was hit. All tell tale signs.

  20. Its not so much the caliber of rifle or gun but type of bullet,or improper type of bullet, partition bullets, ballistic tips, accubond, hollow point, soft point, jacketed. They all have specific duty's, unfortunately the average hunter goes in buys 150 grain bullets and goes hunting. Bullets should match the game u hunt at the expected ranges you will be shooting at. If not, pass thru with out expansion,or bullet fragmentation happens. No bang flop, no blood no tracking.. the rule i was taught was if you shot at it you hit it better put the time in to find it or find the bullet in the dirt or tree.

  21. Holy Crap!!!!Wolly you are a shed god!!! I was hoping to see a buck during muzzleloader but Im not to sure now. Guy over on the bowsite said he has seen up to 5 bucks who have dropped and pick up a few already also. I dont think it has anything to do with the weather. We have had worse weather in the past than we have now and the deer havent dropped this early then. Going to get on the shed hunting as soon as muzzleloader is over!!

  33. I believe that we have lost the concept of what televisions shows really are created for. They are for entertainment purposes . This holds true for every subject matter. I think the days of watching the radio may be more valuable, than most of these shows that air today.

  34. I think that's what most are complaining about ..... the fact that they do pass it off as real hunting. And there is never any disclaimers to indicate otherwise, so the general non-hunting public that happens to stumble across those programs assumes that they represent what every hunter does. So, when we talk about challenge and such in our hunting, they kind of look at you sideways, and then change the subject .... lol. Also, new hunters pick up on unreasonable expectations when they enter the sport because they have been raised on these phoney-baloney programs. Also, I see more and more hunters driving themselves crazy trying to grow huge deer in open lands that look something like the pen-raised deer that they see harvested on TV. Also the expectations and demands that many hunters are now pursuing are being influenced by what they see on TV. I do understand why they have to take shortcuts and knock a lot of the challenge and time out of their hunting process. Let's face it, they have a weekly show to do. They need results. They have demanding sponsors that want to see action and not excuses. If they are going to be in that business, they have to be prolific and can't be bothered by rules and fair chase and everyone else's versions of hunting ethics. No, there absolutely is nothing illegal about what the TV hunter-heroes are doing (most of the time), but there is a false representation of what most of us do as hunters. And that will always be true whether we watch the shows or don't. So, if some hunters get a bit bent out of shape over the deceit and fakery that goes on, I guess I understand some of it.

  35. Adding archery into the gym or phys ed class through a volunteer/free program has nowhere near the same or similar cost as do the after school/extra curricular sports teams/programs. Many problems lie with the fact that we are putting too much emphasis on raising the next college or pro sports player rather than properly educating our kids.

  36. Yes, the suspended coon is in a completely illegal set. Look I am an old trapper from way back, and I am proud to say so. However, it still is a good idea to use a bit of disgression when posting pics. You can pretty much tell what pics might be offensive to those that don't trap. There are times when you can be too graphic for our own good, and a poorly thought out picture certainly can convert a lot of non-trappers to anti-trappers. That's not something the activity needs these days.

  39. Watched my uncle kill a running doe the other day with a single shot shotgun he got as a teen. Doe was at 65 yrds running at a good clip and one shot planted her on the next hop. Now I pride myself at being a good shot but ive never seen someone who could consistently do this evertime, like him. All I could think was dont pizz him off because you dont have a chance even if your running.

  41. Wow I have been away too long - Sorry for slacking and now time to play catch up - November 30th My Father in law and I headed down to the Turkey party near our cabin. Was a great time - All you can drink and eat for FREE, yes FREE. It was Busch beer but beggars can't be choosers. Hot dogs, sandwiches, chips, crackers, cheese, etc... Was a good time. I won a capon (word I was looking for in previous post) which is a castrated rooster. Very tender and juicy bird my wife cooked up when we got back. Spent $10 to help support the fire department and had a good time. There was plenty of snow on the ground at the cabin and we got a light dusting overnight Friday. My FIL and I hunted hard all day Saturday and both saw zippo. I found 3 beds from Friday night around 11am and cut my first set of fresh tracks at 2:30pm that afternoon going up into the neighbors posted porperty. Got plenty of exercise. Got home and my buddy called to see if I was heading out to his property for drives in the morning. Heck yeah I will. December 2nd - Sunday Met at 9am at my buddy's hunting club. We set up for 4 drives. I was driving the wheeler to my stand and I spotted 2 doe. I jumped off, chambered a round, and couldn't get a good bead on the larger doe. Got back on the wheeler and headed to my stand. I was first in my stand and the other wheelers were headed above and below me. AS they went out of sight, I hear a deer in the leaves coming towards me. The drive hasn't started but the 4 wheelers got the deer moving. I get the scope up and see it is a buck. He runs in to 25 yards and stops quartering to me. I can only count 7 points but he is outside of the ears. Figures I have no tag anymore. Just then I hear a wheeler headed back towards me. I am waving to him to let him know there is a deer right under me and only 15 yards away now. He sees me and stops and is only 45 to 50 yards away. I yell to him Buck right here - 15 yards - but no response. I repeat and the deer is just standing there. Finally I said do you want your buck tag filled? and the deer then decides to run off. Man what a cool encounter with a decent buck. The next drive, I set up about 250 yards from the the stand I was just in but on the same level of the hillside. 5 minutes later, here comes a coyote right to me. It would stop behind trees so all I could see was a tail and a nose. Then it would trot and stop again. Finally I took a leading shot as it started to bolt and I missed. Just as I miss, I turn back the way it came from and here comes another one only 20 yards away but already at a full sprint. I didn't even waste a slug on that attempt. Within a minute, I see more movement from below me and here come 3 little skippers. These babies were only slightly larger than the two coyotes I just saw. The come in to about 30 yards and 2 of them bed right down next to a log. I can hear and see the drivers coming over the hill top now and these doe are just watching up the hill. Finally the one standing looks at me and I say "Boo" and the 3 of them took off at Mach3. One of the guys saw a nice racked buck lower on the hill during that drive but had no shot. I believe it was the 7 I saw on the previous drive. Set up for the 3rd drive had me in the same stand as the first drive. This is the one that paid off. Only minutes into the drive I have 2 doe, two decent sized ones, come runnig in to 30 yards and stop. I could not get on the vitals of the first one until she took a step and I squeezed the trigger. She hopped about 10 yards and stopped again broadside. I friggen missed the first shot but I connected with the second. She ran about 40 yards and fell over. I must've bumped my scope somewhere along the way on my shotgun as my 2nd shot that connected was about 4 inches low and 4 inches right. I caught her in the bottome of the sternum about 1 inch high. An inch lower and it was another clean miss. I split the doe with my buddy so we both have 1.5 deer in the freezer now. I was a driver on the 4th drive to let someone else get some shooting in. That was one of the best days I have had in hunting up there in the past 10 years I have hunted there. Great way to end the weekend.

  42. Got this great blonde 6pt today at 9:56 AM. My bud and I were hunting about 300 yards from each other on the same ridge, on either side of a huge, thick and swampy bedding area. We know it's a great area and last Thursday morning I saw our #1 double drop tine buck (made a thread on him) heading back into the bedding as well as a 140 class 8 dogging some does. So, I knew this stand is in a great spot (shot my first buck in my avatar in this stand last year) and was hoping to see one of these bucks. Well, hunted the stand Friday morning and saw a few does so I decided to end the season in the stand. Saw nothing and neither did my buddy so he said he was going to slowly walk a trail we cut through the swamp. After 10 minutes a doe ran past a full speed. After another 10 min I see something come over the top of the hill and I figured it was my friend. But then I saw the rack and he did a once over of the area and headed towards me. I was going to pass when I counted his points (thought he was a 4) but I saw his tines and spread and wanted him. He spotted me when I reached for my gun but he kept it moving and I stopped him at 20yds with a "mah" and let a round go the best I could as I was shaking really bad. He ran 50yds towards the bedding and stopped behind a tree and just froze. His vitals were blocked but i could see a little blood. After a minute, he took two steps forward towards bedding and I shot again a 65yds and he dropped right there. Turns out first shot was true, taking out his lung, liver and stomach and the second shot came out high and somehow dropped him. Beautiful blonde 6pt. I'll try my best to tan his hide and I'll boil the skull. Not one of the huge guys I was after but he is an awesome deer and I am just as happy to take him.
