  1. Its hard to believe its been a year already since I got that dreaded news " I'm very sorry Greg, but you have lung cancer" So much has happened since then, its no wonder it went by so quick. The denial, then the anger, then the acceptance. I was never so scared in my life then that period of time. The biopsy, the chemo and side effects that come with it, and then the lung removal surgery. I remember being so disappointed I couldn't hunt last season, but things are much different now. Just had my 6 month check, and no sign of the cancer and lung capacity has increased. I have my license to hunt this year, with the modified archery permit, I will be using the Drawloc, but I don't mind cause I get to go out and enjoy my favorite sport. Just want to say thanks to the members who gave me words of support, they were all moral boosters and they helped a lot. So good luck to EVERYONE in 2013!!

  2. When I first started bowhunting, my bow was wildly out of tune. I just figured you buy a bow and and accessories, the guy at shop sets it up and you are done. Tuning? What was that? Well, the guy who set mine up may as well have been stevie wonder. I had no business being in the woods with that thing. Luckily I never wounded a deer with it. Never killed one either. The importance of Shooting an arrow straight with a tuned bow cannot be overstated. I can't help But think joes bow is way out of tune. 3 yards? 10 yards? Joe, save yourself the trouble, and get to a good shop and have them spend some time with you. To echo someones point above, you seem to have the drive to become a good hunter. That's important because that's something that you are born with and can not be manufactured. For now, Just get that bow and your shooting right. The hunting end of things will take care of itself.

  7. well at least it did for me today. What started out as a super busy afternoon with everyone pissed off at work became much better for me. My boss called me while I was working and told me to drive to his house because he had something for me. I got there and he was hanging out of his house window and said here catch. he said someone gave it to him last year and he doesn't like it . it was a package of venison kielbasy. I was ssoo happy It made my night worth it. Then I was talking to one of the enw hires and he is an old 77 year old man and he asked me if I hunt and of cours my answer was yes why? he said he has a lifetime hunting license and gets his tags every year and asked me if I wanted a bunch of doe tags. again speechless......... now I sit here drooling over the kielbasy awating the morning so I can make it with eggs!!

  10. You are never going to win against the nose of a mature buck (or doe for that matter)... I don't care what kind of clothes you wear or how many times you shower.. you need to play the wind to win the game!!

  11. With the season in 20 days. Kinda late to get a brand new set up, dialed in, and proficient with it. Have you been shooting a bow prior to now? Bow hunting is about muscle memory and consistency which only comes over time with proficiency. Id be a little hesitant to go out into the woods and shoot at an animal without a solid 500 to 1000 shots under your belt. Congrats on passing your test.

  17. nothing huge but nice to see some deer in the short period of time i had the cam out. i had put the cam out when i was scouting and figured id leave it out for the few days until i returned to limb up the tree and clear a few lanes. nice cross roads spot for multiple runs right in a funnel area. i wont be using the cams anymore i dont think, going to go with the element of surprise lol. i know the big boys are there, i guess if it cross paths with a nice buck i will be seeing the deer for the first time come deer season and not on my trail cam.

  19. Funny how Republicans have gotten us into every middle east skirmish that we are still in in for 20 years now, and republicans like McCain and countless other conservos want to bomb anything and everything yet this cute little media clip makes it look like Obama and the Dems are the ones who want more war?? For this country to have any chance of survival we have to start out with being honest with ourselves and stop letting little silly snipits from either side cloud the truth.

  20. years ago (20+) while I was still hunting a thick swamp I step over a log and stepped over a bedded deer. Scare the hell out of the deer and me. didn't get a shot. it was a small fawn. I did the same thing a few years ago in the dark walking to my stand, but his time I stepped on a sleeping coyote. my 250lbs crushed the poor little thing. It was howling and whining in the dark for about 10 minutes. Never saw it in the day light.

  21. Also may I add...know the movement of the sun....the sun doesn't get over the hill and to that area until well after sun rise...I shot this buck at around 8:30 in the morning by the time Mr B got to me and I had dragged him out of the woods we were closing in on 10:00am...notice the frost still on the grass?

  24. Wind and thermals dictate my entry, exit, route, and even the stand I choose. I am not a fan of burning ground for a bad decision or a lazy one (ie a poor route in that is faster). I think of entry routes most often before a stand site. If I can't get to it safely, no reason to set one there.

  26. For those here that are convinced that the system doesn't work, pay attention to what is happening here. Rambo didn't even show up and no one had to fire a shot. The system works, you just have to have the courage and true dedication to use it.

  27. Just because season opens in 19 days doesn't mean you need to be ready by then. Long iisland season is 3 Months long. You could always use all of october to practice a lot, then try to get in the woods in november. Heck for many yrs our opening day was nov 1. Good luck.

  28. When hunting from a stand a 3 yrd shot can happen....and I can't address sight pins but I know instinctive if I don't know to aim real low then I'll miss or get a bad shot...and some times circumstances just end up where a close shot is needed...being prepared is the only smart thing to do..Ive taken 3 with in 5yrds...one a 7pt mercy kill(turned into DEC) one a fawn mercy kill and one just a nice bow buck to me......I agree with G-man

  31. I think you are late... Takes a long time to get good with a bow. So many to choose from... Just don't be concerned with speed or heavy draw weight. Get a bow you can hold back comfortably for at least 2 min, feels good in your hand and is easy to draw. A good archery store should be able to get your draw length and set you up in that price range or a little more. (Test shoot a few bows before buying VIP!) Try not to take long shots when you first start and try to shoot them broadside or facing away from you(Quartering away), the target area is much better then facing you with a bow(Quartering to). Practice in the tree stand shooting and bend at the leg and waist to keep proper form and alignment. ALWAYS have your self attached to the safety harness, do not compromise on safety with the stand! Good luck and start practicing now!!! Remember to only take shots you can kill your prey with, being ethical to your prey they deserve that much... EX: No shots beyond your kill zone limit... Try to keep your shots under 30 yards... Good luck again and I hope you get a MONSTER!

  36. My buddy built one of these from a kit that he bought online last year. This year I decided that I wanted one and we were able to find all the materials that we needed locally. The basic frame is built from 2x4's and plywood and then the rounded sides are made from concrete mesh that is bent to give it a round shape. It was then covered with a tarp and then a straw mating that is normally used for erosion control. Just thought I would share. The whole project cost less than $100. Looking forward to sitting in it in a few weeks!!! http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x421/NickRL09/image_zps403a97a3.jpg

  37. i've learned to careless about getting a deer, i know my property and hang stands in the natural funnels. i pass many bucks and lots of does. i just enjoy seeing them. Getting one is a bonus. not hard to do.. would of broken 100 in a few years if i fill all my tags like i use to. now that number is meaningless to me. i just enjoy myself and am much happier for it and success seems to follow regardless.

  38. maybe.. i dont really take stock in early photos. but its part of its home range and there is alalways a chance.. older bucks become very good at avoiding the cameras... or you might get one that likes its picture taken.

  43. I'm not as accurate at 60 yards as I am 40 yards. So yeah, I would say so. By the way, why the heck are you shooting at 3-5 yards? If I get a deer that close I'm using my knife, cause there's no way I'm drawing a bow without them seeing...haha. Seriously though, quit shooting inside 10 yards, there's no benefit to it.

  44. You shoot to much for groups and think to much about them... 1 shot a target.at a 3d range or 2 different targets aunknown ranges are best practic. If its within. 3 in of where u aimed your good to go. I know many great target shooters that wouldn't be able to hit a deer 5 yards from them. Groups are not important... a single shot is. Most missed shots are from misjudging distances..practice that more than anything.
