Just for the heck of it I'm adding a little extra logs from standing dead wood to the wood pile. The best information I have found indicates that the 2014 -2015 winter should be both dryer and colder than usual. This may impact the mid to late hunting seasons. Several continental long range forecasts I have seen seem to agree based on the predicted location of the jet stream show that the Eastern US will have a colder and dryer than normal season: http://beforeitsnews.com/weather/2014/08/winter-forecast-for-2014-2015-highlights-2443436.html This view for a dryer winter is further strengthened for us that live and hunt East and Southeast of the lake by the colder water in lake Ontario. In addition to the surface water being colder (see below) is the colder than normal massive deep water. This will insure colder surface temperatures with the autumnal mixing that will take place. This should result in less lake effect snow southeast and east of the lake. Hopefully the colder than normal temperatures will still give us plenty of light tracking snow for the deep woods hunters and the colder temperatures will hopefully give us a stronger than normal rut.1 point

Since most of the event details weren't made public "for security reasons", we were on the water nice and early this morning. We got to Emerson Park right when they were launching the boats, cruised up the channel to the launch site, made our presence known, then went back out the channel to set up there. We made sure that every boat saw us. We never laid eyes on King Andy, but the last boat out of the channel took a hard turn right away and sped away like none of the other boats did, so I suspect he was on it. A bunch of boaters, as well as a fair number of Cuomo's guests, gave us thumbs up and even said "Yes he does" as they went past us. There were LOTS of pictures taken of us, so if you see them, please email them to me at cdmckane@gmail.com.1 point

When i was very young and had just started hunting squirrel. I came home with 4 squirrels and gave them to my mom. Being from the old world (italy) she could think of only one way to make them and that was "al sugo". This recipe is a rabbit recipe which I have eaten often both with wild rabbit and farm raised rabbit. The only difference is the cooking times as squirrel will cook faster. 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 pounds squirrel, cleaned, cut into pieces 1 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper 4 cloves garlic, crushed and minced 3 large tomatoes, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch dice, or 1 (28-ounce) can tomatoes, drained and crushed 1 tsp tomato paste 1 sprig fresh rosemary 1 1/4 cups dry white wine 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn Directions In a large cast-iron casserole, heat the olive oil until just smoking. Add the squirrel and brown well on all sides. Season the meat with salt and pepper, remove from the casserole and set aside. To the same casserole, add the garlic and reduce heat to medium. Cook garlic 1 to 2 minutes, until it is softened but not browned. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, rosemary and wine and simmer 5 minutes. Return the squirrel to the casserole, cover loosely and cook over low heat for 1 hour, until meat is very tender. Add the basil leaves, remove from heat and serve immediately. The resulting sauce goes well with pasta and is usually served as the "primo piatte" first plate. Bon Appétit!1 point

One way to get a lead on who can install meter pole is to contact your local electric provider. I think National grid operates in Canajoharie. Call and ask to speak to a field planner. These people, as I was one before I retired, will know the scoop on who can install your meter pole, install pole anchoring, and wire it too. First 100 feet of overhead service on private property at no cost to you, anything over 100 feet is chargeable on a per/foot basis. If you just have a travel trailer, expect to pay for all footage until a permanent structure is built, then you get a refund. Good luck.1 point

It has nothing to do with logic, facts or anything like that. The mind has a way of magnifying the nearly impossible into reality all on its own. Before you know it, you are walking to your stand in the dark totally convinced that the next step will bring you face to face with a slobbering, growling, female preparing to defend her cubs. Heck, if you work on it hard enough, your imagination can conjure up a bear with rabies .... lol. I remember bowhunting for deer in PA and getting a slightly later start than I really wanted. That put me walking through the woods in that predawn time when there's just enough light to make every stump and downed log look like a bear .... ha-ha. I had my imagination really working at warp-speed by the time I finally got up in the tree-stand. It didn't help that I had to walk next to a corner of a cornfield that was flattened down by bears with scat everywhere.1 point

To sum up the last few comments, unless you're planning on taking 600+ yard shots on deer, and you're using typical loads, the 308 and the 30-06 are practically identical. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Both. It has the rifled slug barrel with the cantilever and the smooth barrel.1 point

no but it certainly helps. i would never call out a hunter but will add that there's a few spots i hunt where you're basically guaranteed a flat head every hunt. i know that i'm lucky.1 point

I like how CT does it. You just print your own tags on whatever paper you want Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

The DEC probably figured that if people are dumb enough to buy camo phone cases , camo wattets , camo flashlights , etc that they would probably like camo tags ....1 point

It works well for a bore sight and also for confirming that nothing has happened like in transport. I bought it when we drove to Northern Quebec for Caribou. The one I have is a .223 laser. It slides into other caliber sleeves and projects a red beam out of the barrel. one thing I did notice was that depending how the laser is installed or rotated in the other sleeves it will vary your position of the beam slightly. So what I did was use it as a bore sighter. confirmed it on the range by shooting and fine tuned the scope. Then I put the sleeve in and rotated the sleeve and the laser and once I found the spot where it matched my scope, I used a file edge to score the back with a line so now I know when using in my 12 ga slug gun, I can line up the 223 in the 12ga sleeve using the scores and the score are loaded into the gun at 12 o'clock in the chamber. Hope that made sense1 point

I know a guy that swears by one of these. He sights a new scope in,then shoots it on paper,After that he puts the boresighter back on and sees where it is "zero'ed" and keeps a record of it.Then all he has to do is throw the boresighter on and check it. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Shooting-Accessories/Sighting-In/Boresighters|/pc/104792580/c/104769180/sc/104570280/i/103924980/Cabelas-Boresighter-Package/1308530.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fboresighters%2F_%2FN-1100224%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103924980%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMM%253Bcat104570280&WTz_l=SBC%3BMM%3Bcat104570280%3Bcat1039249801 point

I agree with elmo! There is no harm in picking up the phone and calling the dec. They are usually more then willing to help out! If you have any questions POST POST POST! Open mouths get fed! Don't let the arrest stop you from trying. Hunting is a healthy pure and progressive sport in nature. You will find the more hunting and time spent in the woods. The more you begin to learn about yourself as a person! How you work, handle defeat, physical limits, as well as under extreme pressure when it comes time to make the shot! Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask!1 point
