  1. Last month, I finally had a chance to pick up my Euro mount. Nothing fancy, but I like the finished product. Not sure if I'll just hang it as is or put in on a plaque yet.

  3. Yes, it is the DEC that has jurisdiction over those events. A phone call would have been the right thing to do. Even if you put it down, the DEC should be notified. It can be kind of embarrassing and perhaps even costly if the DEC is notified by someone else. Butchering the deer before the DEC is called is basically destroying the evidence that it was a justifiable mercy-killing. Ethics-wise, it sounds like he did what needed to be done by someone. No problem there. But self protection from prosecution should be the primary concern at that point.

  4. What happens is simple. Call the local PD.. They come down, shoot the animal 7 times before hitting a vital organ. Then call their friend to come get the deer. You stand there meatless, knowing the animal didn't suffer, and followed the law.

  5. Asking an ethics question is like asking what caliber is the best. Everyone has their own opinions. Personally, I would have made a call to DEC and followed their instructions. Lots of times at least around here, they will take the deer and donate it to the food bank. I know a guy who rolled up on a car deer accident and the deer way laying there in obvious pain. He put it out of its misery beside the road.and got tickets for doing so. They was an attempt to take his pistol permit. Hours in court and lots of attorney fees, he was acquitted. But it still cost him a lot. The laws are in place for a reason. Not to hang a guy like this, but for every guy who does the right thing, there are 4 who do not and try to pass it of on a story. There were also a couple guys here who had 9 car deer accidents in about two months. An old beat up reinforced bumper truck. They were doing it intentionally. They got a had full of tickets too. Now If it were me, I would keep it quiet and go forth. .

  8. I went to see my doctor yesterday to go over results of my C.T. Scan of my lungs that I had this past Monday, and it was great news. The scan showed no return of cancer, and I won't have to have another scan for 12 months instead of every 6 that I have been going to. It has been 24 months since my lung cancer diagnosis, and 20 months since chemo and surgery to remove my lung...and I am cancer free.. I wake up everyday and try to be positive, and the doctors news this week makes me very positive...can't wait till Oct 1 opener!!

  10. Don't be trying to put words in my mouth. The definition of terrorist is in the dictionary and is very specific. Use the language right, and you won't have to worry about those who don't. And by the way, those that would belittle the events of the Oklahoma bombing as not being an act of terror should remember that 168 innocent people were killed, from age 3 to 73, with three pregnant women, and 19 children involved, and 680 other people injured. 324 buildings over a 16 block area were damaged, and it was all done over some wacked-out ideological differences with the U.S. government. Now, anyone who refuses to call that terrorism, had better look up the definition of the word because it was a classic version of terrorism in every sense of the word.

  11. It sounds like the Safe Act is working exactly as it was intended. It has become a major frustration for gun owners. Just yet another addition to a long list of legal frustrations designed to drive the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. If things don't turn out well in this next election, look for that list of frustrations to continue to grow substantially.

  17. Never forget the lost lives taken from us on this day! I will never forget the attack on NY and the innocent lives taken by extremist. The brave people of flight 93 that crashed into Pennsylvania. And the victims in Washington. The bravest of firefighters who gave their lives to try and save others. The hero's who did not allow a plane to be used as a weapon and fought back on flight 93. No I will never forget! God Bless America!

  23. Fired up the wood stove a couple of hours ago (my only heat source). Not looking forward to 9 months of burning like last year. Starts to get old after New Year's day. OTOH, the bugs will leave us alone and IT'S HUNTING SEASON! The wood stacks are full but the freezer's empty. Time once again to change that around. And on it goes.

  27. The point is, it happened, we arrested the perps, they were convicted, one executed, the others jailed, and it stopped! Not so with the Muslim terrorists. They have grown to be an even larger threat, with more attacks since 9/11 and they continue to vow to kill us. Nobody is saying any victims should be forgotten, but preventative measures need to be focused on the current threat, and not wasted on those the government wants us to believe are a current viable threat. It seems to me our government isn't worried about real threats to it's citizens, as much as perceived threats to it's own power and control. Radical Islam grows stronger and Obama goes golfing, but conservative groups are targeted by the IRS for persecution and Lois Lerner's e-mails are lost? Go figure. If you really want to honor the victims, make sure we doing everything we can to prevent even more!

  28. your better off changing limbs to max out at poundage you want to shoot than turn down a bow. much more effecient and quieter that way. i've shot 52lbs my whole life for whitetail no need for more. just leads to shoulder problems. my arrrow does complete pass throughs all the time.. elk i shoot 70 on a different bow... lot tougher animal

  35. I have a 2005 Mathews switchback XT and a 2012 mathews MR5. I do not think it's a realistic representation of today's archers but there is a percentage of guys who do buy new bows every year. I also think it's due to the dollar value tho that makes it appealing. Think about it, a lot of bows can range 800 plus bare bones. 1 year later a guy can pick that bow up on AT classifieds for a fraction of the price and in most cases setup with arrows. So it does become pretty popular at that point. Even guys who don't need a new bow, a deal is a deal...

  44. Go to Google Image and click on the camera that you will see in the search bar. This allows you to either browse to a image you have saved on your PC or paste a URL to an image from a website. Google will then go out and return any image that is close to that one and even sometimes show you the exact image. You can then click on the image and see where it originally came from. I have done it with several pics people post on this site and found fakes. I usually don't say anything because I'm not looking to fight with people.

  45. totally agree with a sportsman. It took me 3 years to get my first deer and it wasn't much to look at it regards to size! Tasted great though! Its hard work especially if you are going to be hunting public land. Get yourself a good pair of binos and use em! If you don't plan on using a tree stand that's fine. I go back and forth however start to find state parks that are close. Then find one that you scout and spot deer at. Get to know the land so you can get in to a "SWEET SPOT" or high traffic area in pitch black with only a head lamp if that. Move very slow and remember if your having a bad day and haven't seen a deer that doesn't mean jack!!!!! They are an amazing animal and I don't understand the voodoo of the woods as to how you can cover so much ground and then as soon as the sun goes down they just APPEAR! Like a grey ghost they move almost without sound as they glide through the forest. Practice shooting and then go practice some more. Remember to go slow! The day you jump a deer is cool however the day you spot one bedded down before it sees you is even better. Stick to the basics with products such as a range finder, binos, scent block etc. You really want to try and focus on enhancing YOUR abilities more so then worrying all the time about theirs. Stalk with the wind to your face is a must. Using binos enhances your sight to that of an eagle so it boosts a natural ability. Learning your firearm is a must when it comes to making an ethical shot. Most of all you just gotta get your butt in the woods. After work, on the weekends. Stay organized so when it comes time to make a trip you aren't worried about where all your gear is at. Permethrin your hunting clothes to keep the ticks off its the only stuff that works. Clean your supplies and always bring more then enough water. You can always use a bottle to pee in to mask your scent in the woods. Hand held gps helps a ton however you are going to want to learn how to use a compass. I keep three of em on me at all times. Most of all have fun! That's what its all about. Your getting ready to experience something you have never experienced before and the rush and so called "buck fever" is indescribable! Good luck out there!

  47. We are in 4R as well. Same deal, more bears and coyotes then bucks. Last year, two weeks before bow season, I walked just a few feet from a huge bear that was bedded down in the pines. Had it been 2014 he'd be a dead bear. But I had to just watch him walk away last year. I never saw him until he popped up. Amazing that such a large animal could blend in so well and you could walk RIGHT past him.

  48. It is more serious of an issue in some parts of the country "Several studies have reported that fawn recruitment rates have dropped from a historic average of 0.9 to 1.2 fawns recruited per doe to 0.4 to 0.5 or less. This equates to a decrease of more than 50 percent in deer herd productivity and certainly has important implications for harvest management, particularly doe-harvest goals." Taken from http://www.qdma.com/articles/three-ways-to-track-fawn-recruitment At the National Convention in July some data reflected a rate as low as 0.20 fawns recruited per doe. That is down right scary. It of course all depends on your specific deer numbers.
