  2. If the good Lord didn't want us to hunt and eat them, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

  3. FIRST POST ON THE KILL THREAD! Saturday morning was hunting at my aunt's property in Rome for the early season. Saw 5 does in the morning and almost got a shot at one but it was a little to thick so I passed on it. About 8 I left the corn field I was sitting next to for a little still hunting. I started walking down an old logging road on the property trying to walk up on something possibly bedded in the beach trees. Got about 150 yards into the woods from my aunt's hay field and saw a black squirrel which I was very tempted to shoot (and almost did!) Thought it through though, didn't want to use up a rage and possibly break an arrow. Well its after 930 now and I had stuff to do with my nephew and girlfriend so I turned around to work my way back to the car. Didn't even take a step and I see a deer walking from my left to righ crossing the logging road I was standing right in the middle on. I could see it was a buck but he was about 80 yards out so I just watched and couldn't believe he was just going to walk right by me. Well he turned towards me and took a few steps then stopped. Then took a couple steps to the right and stopped again. He was teasing me! He finally turned back towards me and was coming right to me! About 40 yards out he got behind a big tree so I quickly and quietly took three or four steps forward and got into a position for a shot. He stepped out from behind the tree slightly quartering away, I drew, stopped him and let it fly! Watched the Nokternal laser right into his ribs. a little back but with the angel still a good shot. I got my composure and texted my girlfriend to tell her plans were going to have to push back a couple hours. I waited maybe ten-fifteen minutes and then looked for my arrow and blood. Found good red blood right from the shot so I got on the trail. about 60 yards into it I found my arrow feet from a stand my father and I built years ago. About another 100-150 yards I found him in a cedar swap dead! Apparently I wasn't the first one to find him....damn coyotes already started to open him up where my arrow went in. luckily no meat was lost. He was my best bow buck so far! Good mass at the bases, good brows and the best part...the hunt itself less than an hour from shot to finding him 0945-1040

  5. Going out, but don't have any expectations of killing a deer. Mainly, doing it to relax, enjoy the view, and to celebrate the season kick-off. Would rather hold off on filling any doe tags, until it's cooler, and I don't need to feel so "rushed" to get one cut up and in the freezer. (No electricity at camp, butcher myself, and would prefer to leave it hang a day or so.) I was on the fence about whether to take the opener off or not. I was out at camp yesterday doing some last minute jobs and it was absolutely beautiful with fall colors and relaxing! It was a still afternoon, birds were chirping, and it was very relaxing just watching the leaves falling, hearing them ticking off other leaves on their way down, as they slowly drifted to the ground. Made up my mind. that mentally, I need a day off to de-stress and unwind, and I know just the place to do it! Taking 3 days vacation off every week from Oct. 1st - Dec. 1st. (Can probably get use to working 2 days/wk! LOL) Plus, camp is right on my way home, so even if I do work, I get out early enough that I can hunt every afternoon/evening if I wanted to. Good luck, but most of all, BE SAFE everyone! Do yourself, your family, and friends a favor and PLEASE USE THOSE SAFETY HARNESSES!!!!

  11. Last spring I stopped in to a local flea market that I have been going to for a few years now. I have gotten to know this one vender, well enough to say hello and shoot the bull for a minute or two. This trip the vender had some hunting items for sale. Two tree stands, some knives fanny packs etc….I picked out a decent box call. Then the vender starts on me. She says "don't tell me you hunt" "You seem like such a nice guy" She starts rolling her eyes and shaking her head in disapproval. I ask her why she is selling hunting equipment if she is so against hunting. Her only reply was that SHE doesn't use the stuff to kill animals. We went back and forth, but it was civil. She doesn't talk to me as much anymore, but when I stop in, I make it a point to always ask her if she has any hunting gear for sale. LOL!! She just grins...

  13. I had a cool experience this morning. I was walking out of the wood, with my climber, back pack, and gun. When I looked up the hill, and to my surprise stood two game wardens. They got a little chuckle watching me coming up the hill with all my gear, as I said give me a minute I'll be right there. First thing I did was remove the primer from my muzzleloader, when I realized they were there, and I was approaching them. Shows respect, and safety to the warden to make sure they understand everything is safe. So I finally made it up the hill out of breath, and sweating like I had just played a football game. I know these two guys got a kick out of watching this action. After the gentleman checked my licenses, we proceeded to have about a half hour conversation about DeerLogic. I was showing them data that was logged in the area, and they were most impressed when I showed them 3 hunt group members in other areas hunting. I'll tell you what these guys were pretty cool. I hear so much negetivity about wardens. But personally I have never had a bad experience with a warden. These people are the ones that are out there protecting us, and our wildlife. I will say that most people that look down on our wardens, are more than likely the ones breaking the law. Keep your nose clean and follow the law, and everyone can have a great relationship with their local wardens. We at DeerLogic have the up most respect for these men and women, and thank you for all you do for our great sport of hunting. Anyone else have a cool warden story??

  23. went down to camp this weekend and pulled my cards for the first time. I was hoping the 160"+ 12 point i have been after for 3 years survived (posted pictures last year), but it looks like it is on to other deer this year. This is so far my #1. The one on the RIGHT! The one on the left needs another year or 2. He is about a 140" 9 point.

  26. There really always has been only one thing that would get me into work. It has nothing to do with making a name or climbing a ladder or some wonderful title, or a position of status. Quite simply, the motivator for me has always been money. Not the promise of money off in the future, but money paid for work accomplished. So when somebody told me that I would perform extra work but with no extra compensation, that didn't happen very often. And when it did happen, they were not dealing with a happy satisfied employee. So the bottom line is that old saying, "you get what you pay for" really does apply. Terms of work shouldn't be based on how much free time they can scam out of you. If that is their M.O. then it probably is a shyster outfit that I wouldn't want to work for anyway.

  28. Very nice, the buck are in a different pattern during the summer but if you have doe the bucks will come! I predict more movement once the temps drop and after the next full moon. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

  29. Omg 140" 8s are not rare or unheard of. Many hit the ground no one even hears about. Just talked with a guy who shot 2 last season one bow 1 gun kill. One was low 40s other mid. Saw pics with date and we share mutual friends. Guys think it's near impossible for an 8 to score that high. It happens people. ..

  32. It's a matter of how much you value your role or your opportunity to advance. For 1, I have had a company paid smart phone about 8 years now. Back to the Blackberry days. If you got a phone, you were expected to look at it and answer accordingly. Generally you knew what needed answering on the spot. but I would say that if you're looking to make a name and climb the ladder a little extra above and beyond is what managers look for. I have promoted and not promoted my employees based on this. I was very clear however that I would ask them to do "more than what your job requires". If they agreed it showed their hard working and willing to sacrifice now for later payoff. Some did not and they still have their current roles. They're not demoted, just not promoted. You may disagree with this approach and that's fine. Remember I'm not old school. I'm 31 but still believe you need to earn your way in life. And if you disagree with that too, then be glad you don't work for me To counter this, I believe and have been fortunate to have bosses who believe you should use every last ounce of vacation. You're stupid not to (if you get paid for it). Family is always first. I have let my employees flex their time to accommodate family issues. Very important to not work your life away. Very important to remember why you work. I'm also a firm believer in working smarter not harder. Gets you home earlier.

  36. Nice pictures, Larry !! I love hunting geese and I haven't even got my stamp yet..Go figure.. I'll start watching for feeding fields for the next season. In the places I hunt I often get some duck shooting too. I love to shoot geese, but I prefer to EAT ducks.. I have two dozen shells and access to two dozen more.. (hint, hint).. You'll have to take someone along who can shoot next time so poor Jenny will have more birds to fetch.. <<grin>>....

  43. I hunted yesterday morning. I missed on the setup as the wind was nil..........I should have remembered that when it is dead calm, they will usually come in from the north east due to the south west prevailing wind. (at least in my experience) The first group came in just outside of shooting range and totaled about 25 birds.........damn. They landed and hung around for a few minutes before Wonder Dog sent them packing. I gave her the green light as I figured any other birds would just land there and present no shot. They flew off and about 10 minutes later about a dozen came in. Bam, bam and bam........nothing. Nice shooting stud. WTH, I was excited. The next group came 10-15 minutes later and to be honest I don't recall how many were in that group. One fell to my second shot. (the first shot was just a warning shot. ) At that point I grabbed a couple more shells and found I had been using my 3" BB and in my bucket I had some 3.5" BB loads. I know, I know.......who needs 3.5" loads ?? Well I emptied the chamber and magazine and reloaded with the Roman Candles!! At least that was the plan!! I moved a bit further down the hedge row to the north to see if I could get a better angle as they came in and it worked. A pair came in and gave me the PERFECT shot opportunity; I pulled up as they were just about to touch down and CLICK. SOB what they frig??? Oh yea, when you reload the gun you should toss one into the chamber too. UGGH! They flared and were never seen again. Word got out to the rest of the resident birds and no more came in. All I saw after that were a couple very distant flocks of geese, some mosquitoes and a ship load of doves. All in all it was another great day to be alive. The weather was stellar and we had a great time Miss Jenny and I. I'll see if I can get a pic or two up from my phone.

  44. I've trained myself to always draw with my trigger finger behind the trigger, actually pushing the trigger forward. Having shot with my fingers for many, many years, I found it almost impossible to retrain my brain to keep my finger from occasionally putting pressure on the trigger of a mechanical release during the draw. Even the release-to-fire setup didn't work for me, but I haven't had an inadvertent release since. It acts like a safety: my finger doesn't move to the 'active' position 'til I'm ready to shoot. One less thing to think about when the adrenaline is going.
