Got up this morning and decided i wanted to sleep in. My wife still went out without me and she shoots her first deer. And to top it all off.....she did it on our anniversary lol11 points

He snuck in behind me at 35 yards. Had to make an akward shot around the back of the tree, over a branch and between 2 saplings. Smoked him. Went 30 feet and piled up. Main frame 10 with split 2's (scorable) and an extra kicker on his right 2 that is questionable. We will call him a 12 point. Tallest buck I have ever seen. His brows are 8", his G2's and G3's average 11". Not very wide, but a ton of character. Rough Gross 147"8 points

A flock of toms came in at 30 yards last night. I was able to take one of the bigger ones. It had a 6" beard on it as well. It will be a great lunch today for the hunting camp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk6 points

holy crap! you killed the whole family!.........at least they got to spend the holiday together.5 points
-
The fawns of an adult doe that gets killed survive just fine. They don't need their mom to find food or survive. Most fawns get booted away from their moms during the rut anyway.5 points

Lol ..... We certainly do get pre-occupied with the subject of what other guys are shooting. We worry about AR. We worry about buck age, and now we are concerned with the family structure of what we shoot.....lol. Oh, I guess it all makes good conversation, as long as we don't start trying to apply ethics and morals and all that unnecessary judgment that often comes along with such discussion. Keep your harvests in-season, and shoot what you want and what is legal, and enjoy your hunt. And try not to pay a whole lot of attention to those that would try to dictate what you are supposed to be shooting.3 points

They don't need the mother. Sad part is not a lot of meat but it's very tender. :-) They are legal to take, it's your tag do what you want3 points

Just because they are trying to suckle still, doesnt mean they are getting any milk or need the doe at all. I have video of a fawn trying to suckle last week and the doe kicked it right in its head for its efforts. I have zero issues killing a doe thats in a group with fawns. Heck, i might even zap the fawn if its female and we need to fill DMAPs. At least Im honest.3 points

Like said above, there are few truly dry does. If you shoot a doe, excellent chance you just shot one with fawns whether you saw them or not. I shoot them without Bambifiing an animal to human emotions. Shooting or not has nothing to do with morals/ethics.3 points

When I am ready to fill doe tags I don't even think twice about it. They will survive fine. My daughter was a bit older than your when she asked me a similar thing. I had to sit down and explain the concept of population control and how that doesn't occur by shooting bucks. She seemed to have gotten it after that.3 points

not at all....just having fun with those who think deer are traumatized or die if they lose a loved one......I've been around long enough to have heard every comment possible that people use to justify taking or not taking a deer, not that they have to, but they do...once again just having some fun with it.....2 points

Stopped at DICKs in Webster today to spend some money . They had a pretty good assortment of ammo . I spotted some Hornaday American Whitetail 117 gr InterLock 25-06 ammo for $21.99 a box . It's the cheapest I have ever seen this priced at . I bought 2 boxes and a trail cam lock box and used a $10 off coupon . It's a rarity to see much of any 25-05 ammo anyplace and when I do , it's usually expensive . Oh yeah , don't forget there is a $10 off a $25 purchase at DICKs in the NYS Hunting Regs booklet on page 7 .2 points

Last year, the day after thanksgiving... And before anyone says they arent tagged, the DMAPs are zip tied to the legs on the does.2 points

I really try not to form an emotional attachment to the animals I'm hunting......if I have two dmp's I'll shoot the fawn as well as the mother so it won't get depressed and suffer if that's going to make some sleep better at night, what's next not shooting ducks and geese because they sometimes come in pairs? wouldn't want to turn Ms Mallard into a widow by killing her husband........and shooting a turkey out of a flock in the fall? that's not for the faint of heart, I did it once and all I heard afterwards was the mother hen calling for hours trying to get the flock back together, I almost stuck an ice pick in my ears to make it stop....heart wrenching for sure.2 points

It is very easy to tell a button buck fawn from a doe fawn. The button bucks have more of a square head and you can visually see the buttons (or the hair separated where the buttons protrude). Not to change the subject but have always thought you should have to use your buck tag for a button buck.2 points

A few years ago it was the final weekend, December 14th I think. Here I am at my stand Saturday morning. Down my field comes not 1,2 or 3 deer but 15. All were yearlings, small bodies and not one adult in sight. you can't tell me they don't make it through the winter. These are the deer that keep the population going. BTW an adult did show up trailing them. A 1.5 year old buck which I took bead on and fired. Only to have my powder moist and a roman candle came out of my gun doing no damage. Typical for my camp. lol2 points

Was on my way to my treestand for a last light bow hunt this evening ,and as I looked ahead to my stand, I see three bears walking under it. Kinda freaked me out. They never saw me, but probably smelled the shit in my pants ! I did not expect that.2 points

By the time hunting season rolls around, fawns may still be nursing, but should not be dependent on milk. I will say that every time they keep shoving hunting seasons ahead, I have to wonder if they aren't getting into a timeframe where late fawns might begin to get into jeopardy when you take out the mother. But, you may not always have a choice. The fawns are not always with the doe. You may take a doe that you thought was barren, only to find that she was nursing. The only way to avoid that scenario is to not take any does. That's not a choice that I would be making.2 points

Hey, how are you! I did! A doe actually I spotted her while I was walking up the gravel road. I was able to slip off into some cover and wait for her to give me a good shot. Wound up hitting her at about 10 yards with my 30-06. I'll actually be bow hunting tomorrow afternoon on the other side of 17a. I meant to thank you for that and couldn't find your contact info!2 points

The best part is, she text me saying she shot at a doe and missed. I got up outta bed got dressed and figured I'd walk in the back way and try and kick something to her. I get to her stand and she tells me she cant find her arrow, so I'm looking all over the place where she said she was standing......nothing. so I walk in tbe direction she saw the doe go and there was a bloody broken arrow. The deer didn't go 40yards. Nice heart shot. She was all excited lol.1 point

I'm such a dumb ass, weather started to break so I drove the 45 min to sterling, realized I left my pack on the kitchen table has my tow rope and knife in it, guess I'll still hunt or find a nice spot to sit, I can always use my multi tool in the truck if I get lucky1 point

9h was dry but windy. Took my 12 yr old on first archery hunt from ground blind. No deer but lots of fun. I think I was more excited. Sunday afternoon looks better - good luck all1 point

I just came up with a new excuse if I shoot a fawn......all I gotta say is "some prick killed it's mother and either I put him out of his misery, or he would have died a slow lingering death from loneliness and depression."1 point

Stayed in this morning, lots of wind and rain. Supposed get lake effect rain tonight and flood watch for northern Erie County. Good weather for the ducks, but I like it a bit drier. Maybe drive to southern tier in morning give it a try.1 point

I never judge a bucks age by his headgear. I was going off body size and his face, which I thought had some grey in it. He was a huge bodied deer. I don't have a scale. It took 2 grown men to get him out of the woods and a whole lot of effort on top of it. Moving him by myself to gut him was almost impossible. I would say he was 225 - 250 on the hoof. Just got the meet back from the butcher and got 70 lbs of just venison back if that helps at all?1 point

Taxidermist also threw a quick tape on him (rough score. We didn't measure to the quarter and eight inches. Just ball park green score): Inside Spread: 14.5 Left Beam: 20 G1 Left: 7 G2 Left: 9 G3 Left: 9 G4 Left: 5 M1 Left: 5 M2 Left: 4.5 M3 Left: 4 M4 Left: 3.75 Right Beam: 21 G1 Right: 8 G2 Right: 11.5 G3 Right: 9 G4 Right: 4 M1 Left: 5 M2 Left: 4.5 M3 Left: 4 M4 Left: 3.75 Gross: 152.5. (Without the 4" in kickers). Again rough, rough score. If he was officially scored, probably a little less. Also, scored him as a typical 10, not the 12 he actually is (kickers).1 point

And one could ask does anybody NEED to shoot any deer? It's not about need.1 point

Not sure if either I didn't see anything OR if I blacked out from all the methane gas that I inhaled from the manure on the field behind me!?!?!? Glad I don't have to stop anywhere on my way home. People would probably think I sh crapped myself!1 point

Congrats to her! Looks like you have a few bargaining chips, seeing that she went hunting on your anniversary.1 point

I shoot fawns 365 days/year. I didn't plant that grass for them to eat.1 point

Just an AWESOME animal.....Congrats! You know that feeling you had when you first saw him and you knees went weak and you lost your breath? Thats the feeling you get when you know you are looking at a top class whitetail and if many others could get that feeling just once they would never kill another yearling again! Good for you!!!.1 point
