Well archery season has come to a close for me. Tonight was my last bow hunt of the year. With a packed schedule between work and personal and knowing I was not going to get out again before leaving for camp Friday for the gun opener weekend. So I decided what ever presented the perfect opportunity I would take. It has been a long and slow archery season for me. Did not see a whole lot of deer and or action. My trail camera's said else wise hence the reason I was holding out till the end but just did not connect. Perhaps during the gun season. Either way he came in at 4:00pm giving me a perfect 15yd broadside shot. Drilled him through the heart ran about 60yds and expired. Nice little basket 8pt. Exciting hunt, no tracking, easy drag, freezer stocked, & a fine memory of the hunt what its all about. No trophy for the wall but a memorable one12 points

obviously not a buck or even a brute of a doe but man was i excited to put down my first ever deer with the bow after a 2 years of hard hunting. finally got it done yesterday on the island with a 20 yard shot. This is what i found after about a 60 yard blood trail.10 points

The giant.... It's been an incredibly tough 3, buckless seasons !!! Letting them go and watching them grow is tough, and for me it's even tougher to continuously get nocturnal giants on the cams and barely ever have sightings. I have in the past 5 years of leasing this property, seen some of the biggest deer of my life, mainly on camera, or past or before legal light. So this year was no different. Couple monsters on the cams, always at night. My birthday was November 1st, hunted all day and didn't see much. Sunday my parents wanted me to come over for dinner, which anybody, including them that know me, know I'm hard to commit to anything during daylight hours, October to january especially during the rut. Well, I commited, and went out sun morning and saw nothing but a fawn. got back to the house around 1130 and decided to hang my new cuddy back near a stand I hadn't used yet this year. As I drove the 4 wheeler back to the house I found myself 50 yards and face to face with a giant. I kept driving and he kept watching. I got about 150yards away and stopped to investigate ( and wipe the drool from my mouth) . I noticed he had a doe locked down in some thick stuff. So I headed back to the house to devise a plan. Unfortunately I could barely think let alone concentrate on the perfect kill plan. Either way, j was going to have to decide, family dinner or kill a giant. I'm a new father, and it does have me thinking differently, so I decided I would go to dinner. On our way to my parents I was taking a slow drive and glaring in the woods, and of course, who do I see trying to cross the road but the giant ! I quickly hopped out of the truck and scared him back into the woods. I could barely keep myself together. Since then I have been a wreck. One thing on my mind, the giant. We have all been there ! Had Wednesday off and was in the woods all day except a 30 min crap n sangwich break.... only saw 2 small bucks all day. Hanging my head and thinking I lost my one shot at the giant I still kept my fire and was in the stand this am by 530. Saw nothing but a button buck all day, till 920, when I caught a flash of brown followed by a chunk of antlers. he was on a mission, head down through the golden rod, making his own trail as he went. I really only had one small window to shoot, so I drew back and by the time I was ready to stop him he was hidden under 6' of swamp weeds... let down the bow... he kept coming but slowly heading for the thick stuff and into never ever land...I picked out a spot under some apple trees that would be my hail mary spot... he kept coming... I stopped him...let the rage extreme fly...lumenok glowing I saw the arrow hit him center mass, good height. Ugh. Oh no. i could not tell you what was happening to me for the next half hour. I decided to wait in the stand. Marginal shot, maybe, but was hoping for liver and hoping that nasty extreme would do work on him. so after an episode of tremors and shaking like a Crack head, 30 min had passed. So I got down.....blood !!! The giant had an arrow threw him !! Found a huge spray of blood on impact and could see blood at least 10 yrds up the run he took. Being cautious I decided to give him 2 hours. I did, when I started tracking I could not believe the blood trail. He went a total of 80 yards and piled up. It was a liver/ gut shot, but it worked, and I am one happy hunter. The best part is that after all the exciment calmed down I realized he's not even the big guy I have on the trail cam !! I will be greatful for him but my goodness what a great season I could have with both !! Who knows, who cares. The giant is dead and I am still in disbelief!!! If you just read all of this, thanks, and good luck to you !! Let em go and watch em grow !! 19.5" inside. 10.5" g2 that's 2.25" thick, great mass, just an aweome deer. Feel free to score from pics !10 points

Went into this sit after a big 8 with a tall caramel rack which was to be my last sit for bow.... Saw 2 other bucks and a doe n 2 fawns ... Didn't see the big 8 n was about to call it quits n hit the can a few times , couple minutes later here he comes trottin to me nose to the ground trying to figure out where his girl is... Not the biggest I've seen from the stand but he'll do ... Been a tough bow season for me , saw a lot of deer but for one reason or another never came together... I sat watching all the turkeys wakeing around me...learned alot this morning...was trying to decide whether to shoot one when they dropped down when I heard foot steps behind me...checked the watch and it was just 6:58 I got the bow ready and in slipped a rack....to my rt...perfect...I'm lft handed.... he was moving through the trees and I was following him with the scope at around 17 yards a turkey putted in the trees and he stopped..I squeezed off the shot and he took two bounds and stopped to look around...dang I thought I missed! then his knees went together and the hip swayed...he tried a wobbly walk but 20yrds after the hit he tipped over...it was a perfect hit...I actually tried to recock the bow but it wouldn't catch???I have to check it out later...I was going to sit and see what the turkeys did...they weren't upset until I started gathering gear to leave then what a racket..lol great morning and out of old faithful stand...all it took was a corn cutting to put them back on track...OMG he stinks...all rutted up...9 points

shot this mature doe Saturday at 1pm, walking to the blind we see a small basket 6 bedded 40 yards away knock an arrow he takes off. get to my blind to see a spike and a 4 point sparring it out for about 5 mins while a doe sat there and watched. I spooked them away so I could get into my blind. not 30 minutes later this doe and another smaller one come into 20 yards to feed on a small food plot I have, waited for what seemed like an hour for her to turn broadside but she never did. took a shot as she was quartering toward me whack saw her jump and the arrow exit a little back, thought it was a good hit cuz she was wobbling and moving very slow. waited an hour and went to see what kind of blood and what arrow looked like, I had good blood on the arrow and ground. I tracked her about 50 yards from where I shot and kicked her up out of her bed she was moving super slow so I knew she wasn't going far, kicked her up a second time and this time I backed out to wait a little longer and get my bow. at 4 I went back in at the last place I kicked her up with my buddy, we walk about 30 yards to see her bedded on property line, had to knock another arrow and finish her off before I lost her for good, second arrow did the trick, turns out my first arrow hit a little far back and broke the hip upon exiting. first kill with the bow and I got a little doe fever can't wait to get out there and take down a buck now.6 points

Got this six pointer Saturday morning at 11am. Drove through the night from Long Island for a one-day hunt. Had a doe come right to me at 7:30, passed. Saw a few more deer in the distance around 9am; and a bunch of turkeys. Then, this guy came up the main trail headed toward the corn. If he turns left, he'll come right to me. He turns right. I let an arrow go and miss low- I guessed 30 yards, he was 36. He jumps into the hedge row and mills around for a few minutes. He then crosses the main trail and heads in my direction along a rub line I'm set up over. I knocked another arrow. He gives me a broadside chance at about 30 yards and I let it fly. Felt like a good shot. But, the deer doesn't react at all. He stood still for a few seconds. At this point, I'm confused. I was pretty sure I made a decent shot. He starts to turn back and head slowly down the ridge. I knock a third arrow and notice his rear end starts to dip a bit- not sure if he was gonna pee in a scrape or just tip over. He gives me a quartering away shot at 40 yards and I let the arrow fly. WHAM, the arrow sticks in the back shoulder and the deer jumps in the air. Waited a few minutes and tracked him about 75 yards and jump him- find a pool of blood and my second bloody arrow. Back out and wait another half hour, track another 75 yards and find him piled up. Best part was that he ran almost directly back to my truck. Never heard of a deer sticking around to take a second arrow. This was only my third time hunting my new land and I couldn't be more thrilled with the action so far. Turns out that the first arrow was a decent hit, just a few inches back. The second shot stuck in the back shoulder and was laying in the blood pool at the spot where I jumped him.6 points

My son's deer, 23 yard shot right through the heart. Very little tracking job. Nice size frame on this animal. Had been shot, just below the spine some weeks ago.6 points

For those of you who do your own butchering, try taking your game cameras and putting one on the remains. Here are some samples. Some of these are sheep butchering remains and some are deer. The results are the same.5 points

Just a quick little background I live down in Southeast Pennsylvania and my parents own some property in Lvingston County NY. My dad and I try and hunt as much as possible up in NY and we also try and do some deer management even though it seems to be difficult in our area. We spend a lot of time and money planting food plots and trying to create better habitat Last year was a difficult year for me and I did not get any deer, as nothing worked out. I did have a couple of opportunities to shoot some smaller buck but chose to pass on them because we are practicing deer management. We were up last weekend and the first 2 days I passed up a little spike and a young 7 pointer. On Monday morning I had the first buck picture walk up to me after first light at 26 yards. He stopped in the middle of my shooting lane I let my rage 2 blade chisel point fly. I didn't hear or see it him, he took off tale up in the air, and ran out of sight. I thought I might have missed him. I only waited 15 minutes and had to get down and check my arrow. When I got to my arrow all 3 fletching's had blood on it and when I picked it up blood came off the arrow onto my fingers. That made me feel better and I decided to just check the first 30 yards for blood. I had blood instantly and it was spraying about 4 ft on either side as I walked the blood trail. I stopped after 30 yards and decided to wait since I didn't see impact, didn't see him fall or hear him crash since it was so wet, plus my dad was hunting so I figured we would give him some time to bleed out and let my dad hunt since it was early. We started trailing him 4 hours later and followed a great blood trail. It was so good that I thought I heart shot him and he wouldn't make it 100 yards. Well after 100 yards I was beginning to get worried and after 200 yards we lost the blood trail, which made me very discouraged. We found a little spot here and a little spot there where he must have ran. Finally he started walking again and blood picked again. I looked up and there he was bedded down about 25 yards away, all I could see was his front shoulder back and it didn't look like he was moving he was down for the count. man was I pumped. He was bedded down his head on the ground looking the way he came from. He went 250 yards and in the second pic you can see where I hit. My rage 2 blade went in vertical right along the side of the rib and just took the tiniest sliver out of the back of his heart. I could not believe how far he made it. He did not have that much blood left inside when I gutted him. It just goes to show you how tough deer really are. I learned a valuable lesson and that is unless you see or hear them fall give the deer time to bleed out. If they are hit hard they will not go to far He was an 8 pt with a 14 inch inside spread and 16 inch outside spread. He weighed 165 pds dressed. Now fast forward to Friday morning in southeast Pa. I started off seeing a small buck right after light a little 7 pointer. About 15 minutes later I see a big deer on the same trail. I put my binoculars up and saw right away it was a nice buck. I got my doe can call out and made 4 bleats that I don't think he heard. I lost him in some brush and finally saw a deer coming towards me it was a big doe. She came through 23 yards away and stopped and was looking around I thought I was cooked but she just continued on. A little one came through then another big doe . I couldn't believe none of them saw me. I figured at that point he would come to the same spot. I look up and here he comes on a leash right to where the doe were. I pulled back grunted and he stopped facing me dead on. I couldn't believe it thankfully he was looking back for the buck he thought grunted and not at me in the tree stand. I held my pin on his shoulder figuring as soon as he turned I would let it fly. It felt like a minute but probably was only 30 seconds. He opened up his right side and I let a 3 blade rage fly and he took off and I could see my arrow going up and down as he ran 80 yards. He stopped and his tail was flickering a hundred mph then he walked off, and I lost him. Of course now a million replays were going through my head and I was worried about penetration and where exactly I hit him but I felt confident and was hoping he was laying close to where I last saw him. I waited an hr and started tracking him with my dad and we didn't have blood for about 25 yards then we started getting some what looked like lung blood. We kept sneaking quietly and there he laid about 30 yards from where I last saw him. It was a double lung shot through his shoulder. He was a very symmetrical 10 pt with a 14 inch inside spread and weighed 142 pds dressed. I shot him within 5 minutes of the one on Monday and I used the same arrow from Monday with a new broad head. Unfortunately this buck broke that arrow but it sure was a lucky one this week. God has certainly blessed me this week with two great deer and I couldn't be more happier. The only thing that would make it better would be if my dad could shoot a nice one up in NY this week as he is hunting up there. Thanks for reading! And good luck hunting!3 points

Shot this wide 8 pt yesterday not long after getting in the stand around 9:30am. He was grunting and following a group of does. He walked into a clear lane at 30yds and I let a 125gr Sonic head fly, hitting him right behind the shoulder with a complete pass through. He gave a slow short run before stopping and falling over. This wasnt his 1st time having an arrow flung at him as you can see the huge gash along his left side belly, took a nice chunk outta his rt leg too. Didnt slow him down a bit. Hes now my best buck to date with any weapon as he beats my 2010 bucks 18" inside width by over an 1" The sharp rear molars tell me hes most likey 2.5 yo. Local: Rockland co. Bow: Martin Nemesis 352 points

To grow eyes in the sides of their heads....had I not caught the white out of the corner of my eye I may not be typing this... On the way to PT I took back roads to avoid the buses...I do not know how he cleared the car but all I saw was legs wht belly and genitals out my windsheild as I had my legs trying to push the break peddle through the floor... Went to get out of car at PT and could barely walk...seriuosly messed up my bad knee and hip...I'm now on ice and elevation bed rest until swelling goes down...As I'm leaving they get a call cancelation...client hit a buck on way in...not as lucky as me... So on the way home I'm behind a pickup and look up to see a doe being chased fullboard across a cut bean feild with a hog of a buck on her tail...next thing I know there is a cloud of dust and gravel coming at me...guy in pick up ran right of the side of the road...guess he saw them too.... Be careful out there......1 point

This weekend was typical of my experiences trying to get my deer with a bow spaning 9 years. Hunted saturday morning with my son, cool enough temps, but had to leave early for a funeral. He can see my stand from his and I called him when I left, around 8:45. Didn't see anything in the morning, but of course when I get home, I get two texts from him saying I had a huge, wide 4 pt, old deer, around my stand at 9:15, and at 9:45, a nice 7 pt was hagging around my ladder. He has the go-pro on his bow to prove it, and I KNEW it was going to happen. Then, Sunday a.m., had some activity rutting in the distance, could see three or four does being chased by a small 4 pter (saw that one earlier), spike, and another huge deer I couldn't make out. Then, he showed up on the hill in front of me, some 60 yards away, a hugh, really wide, 8 pt, not overly tall tines, just big and old. He walked down to about 45 yds, but the wall, needed him to cross it or just come closer and he just sniffed the air, heard the doe behind him and walked off toward her again and they were gone. My son called and asked if I had a shot and I told him I did, but it was 45 yards. He laughed and said, "Figures". I've been practicing at work at 20,25,30,35, & 40, even try the 45, 50, & 55, but from 40 on up, the accuracy just isn't there. Oh, I'll hit the deer, but it's not pie plate material. My son on the other hand will put em in a softball size up to 50 (lil %*@&), but he knows my limits. The time will come and when it does, it'll be fun, just wish it'd happen sooner than later). Will hunt Friday morning again, then head up to hunting camp for the rifle opener. Would be nice to have that 8 strapped to the trunk for a little braggin rights.1 point

What Biz said..... I just got home early this morning...I took a dandy nontypical buck with 10 scoreable points on the right and 6 on the left and good mass, scoring around 180. My buddy took a similar non-typ that scored around the same and even had large, gnarley spilt brow tines. The other three deer hunters in camp shot very nice typical 4 x 4s, from 26" -28" wide all scoring in the 170's. I'll try to get some photographic evidence on here after I get unpacked and settled in . Great hunt.1 point

I've been hunting the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge for a couple bow seasons now, and finally put it together. In my tree all morning, only seen 1 doe run by, and I finally see a deer moving slowly about 35 yds away. Where I am that's about as far as I can see in any direction. It slowly feeds it's way towards me, and at 20 I can see its a buck. It lifts it's head up and stares in my direction for a good 30 seconds, then starts walking right at me. By now I have my bow in hand, but haven't had a chance to draw. He comes in to 15 yds, watching me, and doing the head bob, and I think he busted me. Can see he's an 8-point. He doesn't spook though, just turns and walks behind a big ash tree, and turns back straight at me again to watch from next to it. After a 60 second staring contest, him probably wondering just how that fat guy got way up that tree, he slowly walks past another big ash, and I finally can draw. He comes out from the tree broadside, 15 yds looking ahead of himself, away from me, and that's where he got a rocket through the lungs. Ran a wobbly 30 yds, went out of sight, and heard the big crash a few seconds later! It's a pretty unique place to hunt, but I definitely will be back now!1 point

Took this buck with my Carbon Express Crossbow Monday morning 3 November. It is my first cross bow deer. I initially resisted the move to a cross bow but felt I was an interesting piece of weaponry and liked what I heard about its reputation for clean kills. I hunted two very enjoyable days in the ADK's last week but Monday was my first day hunting in the Southern zone this year near our present home. Got my butt into the woods early in morning in spite of 15- 20 degree F chill factors, NW wind 12 -15. Climbed into my tree stand at 0630. Didn't see a thing, 1000 hours came and went with no sign of deer and I started thinking about coming out of the tree stand and heading down to the house to dig some potatoes for supper. But told myself " the deer could be moving this morning because it is cold, you lazy comfort loving son of gun, you are going to stay in this tree at least another hour!" At about 1030 I saw a medium sized doe moving coming toward the stand. She looks back over her shoulder. Suddenly a buck emerges! He is on her trail! He proceeds closer to the stand but is moving quickly. At 20 yards I made a "verbal buck grunt". He stops. I fire an arrow into his rib cage and hear a "thwack". The buck runs to the west and I see him slow down as he goes out of view. I wait 10 minutes and get out of my tree stand. I locate the arrow that I fired and determine it has passed completely through the animal. I believe the arrow took out both lungs. I walk to where I saw him last and find him there only about 35-40 yards from the shot. I said a prayer of thanks for the animal and the way it all went down so quickly for the deer.1 point

Is it possible to make this or create a thread like this and make it a sticky. It seems like most new hunters have the same questions and it would prevent the veterans from rewriting the same info over and over. I know it probably get tiresome.1 point
