  4. The 300 WSM strikes again. Yea, I know; way to much gun for deer let alone a small coyote. Every nag in the stable gets to go for a ride once in awhile........................................

  5. The family all use to come over Thanksgiving morning and head out to deer hunt. With a young growing family, their not able to go anymore. I go it alone now adays. I go in the woods, greeted by my squirrel and rabbit buddies. I'll sit and think back to all that I have to be thankful for. I may not see a deer, but by golly, it's sure is a wonderful life! Thank God I'm able to do it another year.

  6. I find it curious that I get flamed when I bring up the same issue with today's deer pics, but now we can all criticize this guy for doing the same with his "wolf". The trend needs to stop. Sitting 5' behind your 6 point to make it look huge is just deception. You should be happy with your trapped coyote, your 6 point and whatever your posing with. What egos do we have that we need to trick a bunch of people on the internet with funny camera tricks?

  7. I had a couple run ins with this guy during bow and gun season. During bow I had climbed out of my tree, was walking through the woods looking for sign on the way out. I look up and see him 70 yards away walking through open hard woods with a doe. Once out of sight I tried closing in on him quietly. He came back down the same trail, turned around then went back up. I drew on him at 40 yards with my climber on my back and he never gave me the shot. This past Friday I went out for a morning sit and it was snowing like crazy. Didn't see a single deer for two hours so I decided to get up and sneak through the pines. Found something that looked like a deer head about 60 yards away. Pulled up and he was bedded down looking right at me. Like an idiot, instead of waiting for him to stand up I decided I could probably shoot him in the neck. Took a crack and he ran off. No hair, no blood. Followed his tracks slowly for 200 yards and found he went right to that same brush lot where I had seen him during bow. The following day I sat right next to that brush lot on a milk crate. Beautiful 17 degrees outside with open skies. Started seeing deer early, 7:15. One doe and a spike. 20 minutes later, 3 does at 50 yards crossed into the brush lot. Half hour later a single doe crossed the same path. Popped out in the hardwoods at 40 yards and had a hard time not shooting her. Kept telling myself to just wait. 9:00 rolled around and I am just shy of being froze to the ground. Really thought about getting up and strolling through the pines again to warm up but I told myself to stick it out. 9:15, I am leaned forward looking for deer, looking to the left. When I look back to the right I see a buck standing 60 yards away looking right at me. I pull up and see that it's the buck I have been seeing. Put it on his shoulder and let the .264 win mag eat. He buckled, spun his ass around and took off into the woods. I tracked him in to that same brush lot he had run to the previous two times. Let him lay for an hour, when I came back he was stiff. Didn't make it 40 yards into the brush. My third year back from the Marines and being able to hunt. 8 Point. He is my biggest buck to date.

I am very thankful to able to hunt........ Here's a pic of my 2012 Thanksgiving morning buck. 12. in fairness, you didn't just forward a picture. You made some claims, and followup claims. Had you posted the picture and asked what we thought that would have been one thing. Instead you made claims to species and weight. What'd you expect?

  14. To me, Thanksgiving is as close to a perfect holiday as there is. Hunt in the morning, come home to family and friends for a gut stuffing meal, and then watch football. Plus, get paid to do it.

  16. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Mine is that the picture the OP posted is that of a coyote which weighs under 50lbs. I assume the guy in the picture killed this coyote, so why not just simply weigh it?

  17. Could wolves migrate here? Sure. Have they? All signs point to no. Is that anything other than a @ 45 or 50 lb yote in the original pic? Nope.

  21. If you look at this logically... if wolves were introduced into NY when the first accusation came out many years ago we would be overrun by them... wolves are pack animals... that's how they survive... they live in family units that produce many pups a year... any introduction, even a small pack would soon have created enough wolves where sightings would become a common occurrence... that hasn't happened anywhere in NY... much like bigfoot... there is NO real evidence of even one wolf in NY since the first accusation many years ago... if you believe there are you are at worst delusional and at best just don't know what a wolf looks like or anything about them... it isn't rocket science... just common sense.

  22. I posted this thread a few months back about a local deer that my wife and I had videoed back in July... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23171-wide-load/page-1 Anyways, just thought that I'd make a new thread to update the old one and to show off on heck of a NY buck!!! Note: I DO NOT now any details other than the guy in the photo is not the hunter (photo was taken at a local butcher shop) Before: After:

  26. Seeing I just got my wheels back, told the g/f I am hunting Turkey Day morning. Her reply was "Great, that's when you'll get a deer and miss dinner." I don't have one issue missing a bird dinner in lue of having to skin and butcher a deer. LOL Anyone else hunting the holiday?

  27. That is who I talked to Eddie, but apparently I am full of it. Personally, carry in a chainsaw, cut some nice wide shooting lanes, screw in steps, marking paint to mark you trail and a pocket full of Emerald ash borers. On the way out dig a few spruce to take home for the yard. It really isn't that important to me. lol.

  29. this became better tv than the bills game last night. I hate that it's about race. Right or wrong, justice should be for all colors and not made out to be a big deal or a small deal based on race, gender, sex, sexual orientation etc. That being said, it's sad to see the looting of a bunch of local stores that were probably owned by african americans. I understand that it's a bunch of kids just getting in on the fun and a small group of anarchists who set the fires... but it just doesn't help their cause at all. I am not black so I cannot relate, but the facts seem to support the cop defending himself against a proven criminal. It still sucks that it happened but even worse is the outcome.

  31. I have no doubt that's it's possible...... I also don't believe that if one was truly killed here that DEC would cover it up and say it never happened and that it wasn't a Wolf of Wolf/Coyote Hybrid, those biologists get all kinds of excited when something new shows up in the area they study. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they don't launch an all out investigation just one sighting, and I would also think that any Taxidermist that knows what they are doing would report any animal to DEC that they think is something that is not what it is brought in as......they have to answer for the animals in their possession if not legally tagged or possessed.

  32. BTW..Thank You First-light... What makes you ppl think... The Eastern Grey Wolf that breed with yotes in Canada could not or would not follow the same migration route that their hybrids followed?

  35. Not trying to stir things up here, but I have an issue with the original question...If you know using screw in steps is illegal on state land, why even consider it. It really doesn't matter if "hunters do it all over the place", or "i'm OK killing animals, but not harm trees". My question is, if your willing to ignore this law on public land, what others are you willing to ignore? I don't mean to embarrass you, or call you out, but this kind of thinking is what can, (and does), give hunters a bad reputation. There is a reason for the law...even if you don't understand or agree with it.

  36. All this Ferguson crap sickens me! When the white Rochester, NY cop was shot & killed by a black man for no reason & he left behind a wife & kids there was not one riot. Just a sad, peaceful funeral & pictures of a crying wife & kids along with thousands of cops there to honor him! Now the guy is dead & buried & most likely forgotten by most of us, its disgusting BS! I feel the Ferguson cop was doing his job & protecting himself. jmo.

  38. Anyone who thinks that is a wolf has never seen a wolf... very curious how he sat 10 feet behind the animal which makes little sense unless you're trying to give the impression that it is bigger than it really is... if I trapped or killed a wolf I would certainly cozy right up to it for the photo so you could see how big the animal really is... some people will do anything to prove there are wolves in NY... there are not!

  45. No I'm just saying...what I have been trying to get across for years...Animals do not act the same in all areas as the human "play book" reads....We show our own "pack " mentality when going through life relying on the "singular information" that is feed to us by others...instead of opening up our self to explore the possabilities....to see the diffences in information to real world trueths.....Animals are more intune with this world then we will ever be...they move and when needed...... be it a few or thousands of miles. So we do not understand why the natural survival instincts in their "home range" may kick in to cause a migration...we don't live there....but it happens...don't think that 1 lone mnt lion moving might not be the start of a trend...that the increase in wolves in the mid west won't cause a movement East....Our coy-wolfs started out in Canada...and traveled railroad lines to get to NYC...our moose traveled here and are increaseing ...BTW don't think Elk won't move up from PA...migration isn't just for birds you know... interupted (sp)

  46. How to get rid of ticks.........2 blocks of wood and a lot of time........Just goofin around. I was told by a very knowledgeable woman that was involved in wild animal rehabilitation that the tick population is directly related to the field mouse population. The more field mice in an area, the more ticks you will find. There was a big group or coyote hunters in my area that killed 300+ yotes in one year. It may have been coincidence but the ticks went boom in numbers the following season. The coyote hunters have stopped hunting in my area and have moved on. This season through the spring, summer, and thus far I have counted about a dozen ticks on both my clothes and my clients clothing. That includes all the food plot work and tree stand set up. There may be no hard evidence that the ticks relate to the field mouse, but in years when I get many coyotes cam pics and sightings, the ticks aren't as abundant. But years when coyotes, bob cat, red tail hawks, and owl sightings are very low we dig out and flick off way more ticks. Example, I was bitten and had to remove 20+/- ticks in one year about 6 years ago. This year, knock on wood, none that had bitten just crawling on me. Be aware and always check. If there is any question, get the antibiotics. Lyme disease is very real and very nasty.
