What is a "Smart Rifle"? Regarding the cams, I think people really over-estimate the advantages. Drones ..... watch out for these. I think they have a much larger potential for mis-use than most people can even imagine. That's funny that such things would be made into law by a state that has the motto "Live Free or Die" ..... lol.3 points

I don't know what apalls me more, the total lack of respect for our wildeness and complete ignornace of people who toss their beer cans in the woods OR the fact that people think it is ok to consume alcohol while they are hunting with a deadly weapon! I shed hunted for about 6 hours yesterday and came across no less than 50 beer cans in the woods. I came across a tree stand that had 12-15 laying around at the base of it. People disgust me.....and scare me.....that they would even fathom drinking and shooting. I can walk deep into any set of woods and always rely on fiding at least 1 beer can. Crazy. Done venting!2 points

Do you know what weeds are beneficial to your lands? I watched an interesting video the other day about organic farming...they use living mulch (clover)and had weeds invade it. Chicweed and mallow...they did an analysis of the mellow..it does not fix nitrogen but release more nitrogen back into the soil when mowed than alfalfa..when I get a bit more time I'll do some research on our native weeds for just such things and protein levels.2 points

As stewards of the land the only thing we can do is lead by example. Documenting your trash pick up will make more aware of the subject. Sounds like we need a trash pick up thread to show not only how bad our woods can get but the fact that we as hunters and outdoors men and women are the keepers of the land and that we respect it and clean it better than anyone. No one will ever protect the lands as well we can and do. Lets document it in pictures!2 points

We may never be able to reconcile the two types of hunters and the many in between them. Many of us would agree that the sheer joy of being out in the woods or field is a major part of why we hunt. But no one likes to get skunked.2 points
-
I get all that, that technology is advancing and it has advanced with hunting weapons, equipment, etc., BUT how far will things go? From some peoples perspective (including my own) hunting is still a throw back to a primal way of life. Yeah, we have much more advanced weapons than the caveman did, but a modern day hunter should still possess similar skills as that caveman. These days people don't want to drag them out, skin them, gut or process deer themselves anymore, so where does that leave us? If we bag something we are proud of our hunting prowess and will brag about it to whomever wants to listen, yet how much REAL hunting skills do we possess? Add wireless cameras, drones, etc. to the scenario and true hunting skills will diminish even more. All we will be is triggermen and nothing more.2 points

As much as I think ethics and morals come into play, the effort to resist change should be spent wisely with regard to hunting. I am not a tech wizard or geek, yet I have a smartphone attached to my hip and use MMS cams. The cams keep me engaged in hunting in ways that keep me hunting when free time is at an ever-increasing premium. I'm in that transitional generation that grew up as a kid just as the first home PCs were really getting to mass market. I still remember what it is like having to talk to my best friend's parent's when I called them on their house phone. The following generation doesn't know life without the internet and personal technology. Keeping a pursuit to the ethical standards of yesteryear is one surefire way to limit growth or sustenance of the hunting population. I am sure there are lines drawn somewhere, but we need to realize technology is here to stay in the sport and in reality, always has been in some capacity - cams on bows, rifled barrels, etc.2 points

A Democrat Congress woman from NY state has an idea that will affect law abiding gun owners, but not one single criminal, and she knows it! The anti-gun agenda pushed by Democrats has nothing to do with reducing crime! http://www.examiner.com/article/ny-congresswoman-would-mandate-liability-insurance-for-gun-owners1 point

How about making a requirement to hold a public office, they must carry a $10 million liability policy. They screw-up, therefore must pay up. I got another idea, propose at all Democratic leaders (state/federal level including President) are banned from being protected by armed guards (police, military, or otherwise). If the citizens in this country can't have a firearm even though it is in our Bill of Rights to have one, then they don't need protection by one either. It's like saying stealing a hammer and killing somebody with it makes the original owner of the hammer the responsible party. (or other commonly used items of murder [knife, screw driver, bat, pipe, etc]) It's not like guns ever get stolen from a police car either. ... wait didn't Tommy Lee from Motley Crew do that once after stealing the police car for a joyride.1 point

I personally talk gross score, B&C goes by net. I dont think deductions are a fair measurement, the deer should get credit for every inch of antler thats there.1 point

Some consider any pictures of game on a trail "cheating" so who is to say what is considered fair chase. If I know a doe goes to the same field every day with a trail cam then I did not do very much to "hunt" that animal. I think trail cams are fun but give a advantage most hunters would never have unless they stayed in the woods at all times which is impossible. Drones and MMS take that advantage to the limits and should be banned during hunting season. Technology advances every day. What about a drone with a gun? Then the drone can be programed to cut up and deliver your meat? LOL1 point

They won't break the sound barrier on land due to sonic booms - if not operationally necessary. If you've ever heard one, it'll scare the crap out of you. You will not forget that sound. You feel it almost as much as you hear it. Growing up in an area where the largest military presence in the world was, and having a father in the Navy who led a squadron's ops group (VA-42, now closed), I learned a fair amount about military planes of the time. A few times a year a plane would break loose just offshore or overhead for various reasons, but it was not normal practice due to the structural damage the booms can cause and the often cited but difficult to prove damage to wildlife and vegetation, and even humans. I distinctly remember one boom that made the news (they don't always) because it happened over land (much more rare then when they do over the water in that area) and it was directly overhead the main drag of the commercial area - windows were blown out of a ton of buildings. I remember a new bank had a lobby that was mostly glass walls and ceiling and it took a beating. Because many of the operational units break the barrier over water, there's a bit more info to go on, but the booms do appear to have an adverse impact on marine mammals such as sea lions and even dolphins and whales, similar to use of navigational/SONAR. Many farmers in that area believe it damages crops and can reduce productivity in animals, although not much has been done to really prove it.1 point

An OLD Marine Sgt told me two things one must never forget…1 “Paranoia is good if somebody is trying to kill ya” and 2. “Don’t be too stupid to live.” These axioms also work for mushroom picking. Wild mushrooms are wonderful to eat and look for but can be extremely dangerous if not deadly. In college I had a Professor of Pharmacognosy (study of the medicinal properties of plants) when asked to teach me mushrooms to pick said, ”… read, learn and read again. Then go out with somebody who knows what they are doing and watch. Then Learn a couple of mushrooms that cannot be confused with a toxic species and pick them.” A few years ago I was involved with “treating ” (a relative term) a “veteran mushroom picker” for eating a “white mushroom” he picked and ate on Sunday. By the time he was transfered to the Medical ICU (on Wednesday evening) he was already turning a bright orange (from acute liver failure) screaming in pain. He died that Friday while waiting for a liver transplant. (We never knew the species because he ate all he picked) The best Axiom is “If in doubt throw it out” With that said mushroom picking is good fun and a taste treat to the palate. You just have to be very careful and again discretion is the better part of valor when mushroom picking. As for those giant puffballs? They are good, safe to eat and have no deadly look alikes. If they are bigger than a softball or soccer ball they are safe to eat. Peel (they have a latex like cover exposing a solid white body) slice and either sauté in butter or deep fry making a parmigiana casserole with sausage and meatballs. Wonderful. (note: when you slice them open if brown or green tinged…they are getting old and taste rapidly declines.) Species I pick are “hen in the woods” , “lion manes” and some shelf fungi. I do this because I cannot confuse them with anything deadly and have not found a local picker to team up with so while I see many different mushrooms on my property I pick the ones I know are safe…..and many wild mushrooms while safe to eat should be cooked as the heat destroys some mild irritants that can cause a mild stomach distress to some people. NO amount of cooking/putting a penny in the pot or other "tricks", makes a toxic mushroom safe to eat. So look, pick, be careful, enjoy. mangia and know what you are doing. If in doubt throw it out.1 point

Holy mother of morels..... I never realized these things got so big. This one is obviously past it's prime as it was crawling with slugs so I just left it lay, but it's only my second morel find so I was still pretty excited that this may be turning into a hot spot! Just across the crick from my 1'st one last year.1 point

I work around Republic Airport and get to watch the planes as they come and go to the Airshow at Jones Beach......good stuff for sure. The coolest thing to see is the Blue Angels "Fat Albert" jet assisted C-130, I don't think it plays a part in the shows, but more or less brings their gear to the shows, but I may be wrong. Either way, very impressive to watch it take off.1 point

I was just talking to Gary Huber yesterday at Cabela's (he works there) about Slick Tricks. He and I both shoot them and have had tons of success between us. They fly straight as a proverbial arrow. Not sure on the exact total of deer that I've killed with Slick Tricks but I'd guess 15 or so. Lost a couple too but you sure as shiit can't blame the broadhead. That'd be operator error!!1 point
-
that's the way they do it in 4J that's bow only. checkstation availability has to be there other wise it's a pain the butt. can only hang on to a deer head on ice for so long and it'd be helpful info to give them a dressed weight from a processor or yourself. you could grid off each WMU to keep record of any serious density changes within a WMU that really is only used by that region.1 point

3 things (which probably have crossed your mind, but I don't see mentioned here): 1) These new regulations are aimed at bringing the Doe population down correct? And, from what I read, they are enacting their "emergency" protocol to get this pushed through immediately without public opinion (which in most cases is required). If it is such an "emergency" that doe populations are so high, and these need to be enacted for 2015, WHY would they chose early season bow hunters? Bow hunters are such a negligable part of the hunting crowd and deer harvest compared to gun hunters it is pathetic. IF it is such an issue, why not make opening weekend of gun Doe only (or earn a buck, which has been mentioned). Doesn't anyone find that odd (and I say that sarcastically). The answer is obvious, it is about appeasing the orange brigage and about revenue. Period. These regulations have nothing to do with doe harvest (or, as I mentioned, they wouldn't target bow hunters and early season only). Imagine how many doe would be shot if the Saturday opener was Doe only, and in order to get a buck tag for the remainder of the season, you had to harvest a doe on Saturday? The population would be regulated in 1-day, gauranteed (I am not proposing this is a good idea, but simply making a comparison to what they are going to do, verse what is practical. proving a point that they only care about orange and green). 2) The heavy Doe areas (has been mentioned previously) fall in urban areas. The DEC folks, who are glorofied liberal politians and nothing close to actual biologist have public opinion in their best interst, not the actual deer population or the hunters (and when I say public opinion, i am referring to the non-hunting crowd). These "deer numbers" and the increased over browsing of landscaping, car accidents, property damage etc, is driving a good chunk of this. Changing the regulations where I hunt? It won't make a difference. Allow controlled bow hunting (Doe only) in urban communities and you would surely significantly decrease all numbers (and a win win for hunters looking for food and communities looking for less deer). A good example: The town I live in is on the border of non-hunting on 2 sides. The hunting area is well controlled by hunters and i see very few dead deer from cars. The non-hunting areas are litered with them. Change the regs for the entire town and the deer population will remain EXACTLY the same. Change it to control where the deer are NOT being harvested and it is a win win. 3) And the big secret that wasn't published is they are looking at putting the muzzleloader season in September state wide. If that happens, this state's hunting will be destroyed in less than 5 years. In September, when deer have never been hunted before, you can't send out a gun brigade into the fields where they are still daytime feeding in bachelor groups. They will be slaughtered. Moral of this, you live in NYS, which is run by anti-gun, anti-hunting liberals who need revenue driven agendas to feed NYC and don't give a darn about anything else. People just need to accept where we live. This will never change.1 point

As long as wildlife management is looked at as discretionary spending by the state government, and state budgets are balanced by withholding funding from the DEC, nothing can be done about the poaching situation. But I wonder if an agency who seems to worry only about eliminating deer from the landscape are really putting forth a maximum effort in fighting poaching. Apparently we have two competing philosophies at work in the DEC. One half concentrates on how to whack on the deer population while they are also want to give the appearance that they need to safeguard the herd with strict poaching enforcement. I wonder which philosophy is winning out?1 point

It's important to do a lot of the leg work for them as they can't. So many calls that end up being rumor compared to what happened. Video on your phone, trail camera pics or anything else helps. If you see something going down don't report it after the fact. Do so while it's happening. Not saying this wasn't done. Just saying ECO can't be everywhere, police, and CSI. If there's road hunters or a lot of shots during archery get them to put up Robo deer. Record times when shots are heard or seen happening. It all helps.1 point
