  1. It would be interesting to see just what percentage of all DEC personnel actually do engage in the activities that they are in charge of managing.

  2. Have had Equine meat more than a few times, it makes for outstanding table fare. A few times in Europe, here at home where some local Mexican folks grill it for fajitas, and the kind that wear black and white pajamas; Go out of my way to munch on some Zebra. Grilled loin as steak, in a rich stroganoff style gravy, breaded like schnitzel with wild mushroom sauce. Bought dried sausage snack sticks made of Zebra meat on several occasions for hunting snack in the field and could live on that and Eland biltong (like chewy soft jerky). YUM!

  3. Hey guys, I recently wrote this article "5 Ways To Get More From Your Trail Cameras". Give it a read and let me know what you think. I have found these five steps have improved my success with trail cameras greatly. Anything that you guys would add? http://adirondackbowhunters.com/2015/07/01/5-ways-to-get-more-from-your-trail-cameras/

  4. The cry to take this flag down is simply unjustified. The Confederate Battle Flag was simply just that, a battle flag. It was never even a National flag, so how could it ever have flown over a slave nation or represented slavery or racism? This myth is continued by lack of education and ignorance. Those that villify the Confederate Battle Flag are very confused about history and have jumped upon a bandwagon with loose wheels.

  5. I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it in the last 15 years..... but Dalton's sidekick gets killed, lol I forgot to chill the eggs and they stuck to the shells and were a mess to peel. It wasn't pretty, but they just got smashed up anyhow, so no big deal. Maybe I'll send the leftovers off to Paulas B-Day party!

  6. I bring my water to a boil before hand, run water over eggs first before putting them into the boiling water. I like my eggs to be soft (even a bit runny) in the middle so my timer is 8-9 minutes. 12 minutes is fully cooked through/over done. Yes, run cold water over them immediately afterwards because the eggs continue to cook a little after you take them out of the boiling water from its own heat. No. Patrick Swayze maybe but John Dalton was a bad ass. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  10. I've had this conversation many of times. Every one hunts their own way and if they can successfully perform an ethical kill with their legal caliber of their choice, it's not my place to tell them what they should or should not do. I will make these points though and say no more. 1. How often has any hunter ever said "Damn, I should have used a smaller caliber."? 2. If you want to challenge your shooting skills, can't you do it against a smaller piece of paper rather than a living, breathing creature? Is hitting the smallest possible target really a hunting skill or a shooting skill?

  11. I understand your point Growalot and you know what if it was my back yard I might have done the same thing this guy did and scared it away. The video is short and does not show a kill or blood. I doubt that deer survived, it probably had something wrong with it that made this bears predatory instinct kick in. Do males go after people, yes apparently some rare occasions it happens. So do deer, cows, horses, snakes and sharks, we forget we are in the food chain for some species. When we attach the human aspect to Mother Nature we say it is cruel. But that bear felt no pity or remorse just a need for food. At the very minimum I would have called the DEC to put down the deer. More than likely I would have dragged what was left of the deer back into the woods for the bear to finish with a new trail cam over it. Sorrow for the deer, yes. Would this be a horrible scene to watch, I am sure. But what a scene of nature. I would have interfered enough by putting up that fence. The bear lived here before I did. If you don't like bears in your back yard killing deer then move because it just happened. Sarcasm at its best. Now while deep woods hunting I get to think about those articles, thanks Grow! LOL Solo camping in bear country, hope those males are full! Its not the hunting part I worry about its when I am sleeping alone in my sturdy bear proof pop-up tent, arg. "What was that noise!"

  12. First I would ask if when you are talking about a 338 brush gun are you talking about a 338 marlin or a 338 win mag. If it’s the marlin a 1x4x24mm scope is fine I use that scope on my 444 marlin. If you’re talking about the 338 win mag then go with a 3x9 40 to 50mm.

  15. Thought For Today. In 1776, as it seemed our young nation’s beacon of Liberty was at risk of being extinguished, Founder Thomas Paine wrote, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” This past week, our Supreme Court issued multiple diktats that, in effect, overrule the Rule of Law in regard to the so-called Affordable Care Act and so-called “gay marriage.” These are both unfortunate examples of why Thomas Jefferson referred to the High Court as “the despotic branch.” So yes, these are the times that try men’s souls. However, the hard reality is that for all times, Liberty has been threatened by its antithesis, tyranny — and this will always be true. Honor the holiday by committing yourself to the defense of freedom and independence.

  16. Here is the guy that will be piloting the DEC until Cuomo gets around to appointing another one of his buddies with another political pay-off. Marc Gerstman Bio: Marc Gerstman was appointed Executive Deputy Commissioner in August, 2011. He previously served at DEC from 1988 to 1994, as Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel, and from 1985 to 1988 as Deputy General Counsel and Director of Legal Affairs. From 1995 to 2011, Mr. Gerstman was in private legal practice, specializing in environmental, natural resource, land use, zoning, administrative and municipal law. He earned his juris doctorate from Brooklyn Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY New Paltz. ---------------------------------------------------------- Looks like another lawyer. I'm sure he'll have some heavy priorities that involve fish & game management ..... lol.

  18. I do find that if you are not too concerned about getting up close n personal, a lower cam position, back a good ways from a trail, can be more or less ignored. I brush 'em in when low too. Doesn't seem to effect movement too much.I also like to find a Hemlock for lower cam positions. You can hide them well amongst the lower dead branches.

  23. No question that Ma Nature is a cruel one. This kind of death and even much worse is part of every day in the wild. However, I absolutely do sympathize with those that would like to have had the scene interrupted. I have to say that I am a pretty hardened old critter that has seen some pretty horrible crap, but I see no way that someone would watch that video without feeling some sympathy for the deer. I have to admit to feeling a lot of the same kind of discomfort (if that really is the right word) as I did when my Brother-in-law spined a doe once. We both went absolutely berserk trying to finish the animal as quickly as possible. A definite panic set in that one of these critters that we were trying to kill was enduring such terror and pain. I think it is quite natural to want to stop the suffering. Watching this video brought on the same feelings and desire to have someone do something. I have to admit to stopping the video before it was finished. It was that hard to look at. Of course, given the fact that the bear was in the midst of a killing frenzy, and that it most likely was illegal to fire a gun in that kind of residential area, the practical options were certainly limited to pretty much nothing.

  24. I almost forgot about the bear that killed a deer in my neighbors yard a few years ago, lol. This sucker didn't even eat the deer, he just killed for sport, and then moved on to the bird feeders after he was done drooling all over the soggy carcass! Once the food was gone, no one ever saw the bear again. Bears typically aren't ambush predators that lie and wait over a location waiting to pounce just because they caught a meal there before.(unless we're talking grizzlies over a salmon pool) They're scavengers or oppertunistc feeders... not pre meditated killers, that's why I think something rare occurred the led the bear in the original post to kill this deer where it did. Anyhow, here's our local killer!

  29. We certainly have had quite a collection of DEC Commissioners in the last few years. Hard to see how any consistent policy can be maintained when they change commissioners everytime Cuomo owes somebody a favor. And so the DEC was being run by some Al Gore type .... eh? I'm sure that fish and game issues got a lot of attention and priority during his reign.

  37. The 150gr 308 @ 2960fps will not retain energy as well or shoot nearly as flat as the 130gr 270 bullet @ 3100fps.The 30-06 is a jack of al trades yet master of none. The 270 is a long range cartridge that excels on deer/antelope/sheep/goats, yet has ample penetration W/proper bullets for elk. What's the fascination W/30-06?
