For the "overpopulation" areas, they're going to hammer the ability to shoot bucks to force doe harvest. There's so many options on the table...OBR, EAB, 4 pt a side AR, the gun season in bow, antlerless only bow season, etc. I still think the primary weapon of choice is going to be the gun hunt in bow season. What will be interesting is if they try to force BOTH the first two weeks of bow as antlerless only AND put in a gun season in bow. Face it, 2015 is going to be the last decent hunting season for a while as these changes come into play and create the new norm.3 points

Maybe you don't have a problem in your area, or perhaps you choose not to see it, but doubting that others do have a problem in their area, is blind denial. Define it simply as an over abundance of coyotes, far beyond the carrying capacity of the area, causing a great deal of ecological harm by their presence. They may disappear on their own in time, but only after they have devastated the area.3 points

I decided to build a woodshed to hold my firewood. The rubbermaid prefab shed I used to use can no longer support the loads of wood I stacked causing the walls to bow out creating large gaps and allowing rain and snow to come in. So this year I decided to build a wood shed. With the help of my son and his soon to be Eagle Scout friend we build the base, floor and posts last weekend. Today I plumbed the posts and secured them with 10' pressure treated 2 x 4's. Next weekend the T1-111 siding will be going up and the roof will hopefully be completed, leaving the doors for another weekend.2 points

The deer have no problem finding apples this year , they are out there now hitting the apple trees on the side of the house with all of the branches weighted down with apples. They have been doing this the past few mornings before working there way up the hill .2 points

Had one Yesterday...I went to a deep woods plot that I worked up sometime ago...and was checking the sun light and possible trees that needed cutting when I heard a rustle and looked over to see a single fawn 10yrds away. It had jumped out of the brush towards me so I froze...After a minute or two stare down it chewed it's back, looked around and very slowly walked away. Not far, for it did a semi circle and came right back to it's bed. I realized what it was doing and quietly backed out so it couldn't see or hear me...what a pretty little thing she was...I was wearing my bright blue work T and she should have been able to see me clearly...makes me think she has been watching me all summer....could even have been the one along the front plots fencing that I accidentally tossed a rock on a couple of weeks ago. So I know this area is a regular route that Momma takes....just need to drag the spot and put something down.1 point

EBIDX%3AIT 2015 Brownings. the 5 and 7 are red IR. The 6 and 8 are Blackflash. These prices won't last long. Both FHDs take incredible videos. The 6/8 blackflash cams take good quality night vids for black flash. Nighttime pics for the 6/8 are so-so at best, but serviceable. All vids are limited to 10 seconds at night, but don't let it stop you from buying. These cams can re-trigger video as fast as you can say "IlikebigbucksandIcannotlie." (Seriously) All of these cams use multi-spot metering and not the average...meaning these cams adjust illumination and exposure on the fly to ensure a quality pic. This is nearly unique to Browning at the moment in mass market cams. I haven't seen another company do this yet, but maybe one exists...I know Moultrie, Primos, and Browning are not, and same w/Covert. The 7 is the best overall value on a $ basis, as long as you don't mind red IR. I am very partial to blackflash due to buck avoidance, but I'd still buy the 5/7 in a heartbeat because of their performance (limiting their video use to plots and open areas or hung high aimed down). Are these cams infallable? No, but they are turning out to be the mass market cams of the year so far in 2015, especially after a dismal 2014 across the various manufacturers.1 point

What place east of the MS or reasonable midwest states (meaning sustainable) offer draws for whitetails at state level or per WMU? I do believe that total is zero, and probably for good reason.1 point

Just shoot the dang coyote's and keep your mouth shut about it. No need to put out poison. So no eagles were harmed making this post!1 point

In all honesty I think it should be twice that due to pure stupidity and ...sorry viciousness...poisoning is just wrong. He had no idea how many unintended animals he would get with that. Also unless brain dead, in a coma or a hermit...everyone one should have learned at least a fraction of what went on out West when ranchers did this to kill the western coyote... PS.... Mike sorry I riled you ... was just kicking the conversation into gear...1 point

Looks like Zone 3 where they already have AR in place is the largest zone with 2 coming in second. I find the coloration interesting almost like green is the go area and red is the hot zone ...funny what comes to mind.1 point

A very generous member on this site (phade), recently sent my grandsons, 11 and 13 years old, a trail cam. They have both spent a lot of time in the woods with me the last few years. Though they both enjoy the outdoors, the younger one, Zac is just nuts about deer and hunting. So this being their camera, we decided Zac would pick the first spot to place the cam. I let him lead the way in our woods out back. I told him that he was to pick the spot based on what he knows about our woods. So he did this all on his own, picking the exact spot, and even hung the cam himself. Thanks phade from me and the boys. #1- Nice doe #2- Up and coming buck #3- Same buck ? Not sure what do you guys think? #4- ?? #5- Can you find the deer? #6- My grandson Zac1 point

If you want to see something interesting see how many you get after posting a " good" buck photo either dead or a trail cam one. I often watch others "views" grow after they post one, just to see how many hunters are checking them out . I also end up on profile pages when using the iPad , the screen seems to jump a bit just as my finger reaches it ! I also used to watch the " posts to views" ratio some folks are way higher .1 point

10-4 on being careful out there. The guys are still hopeful that the lumber harvest will start soon...still too wet in the woods. Maybe an extended stretch of hot, dry weather will allow crew to work later this summer.1 point

Oh, come on with that.... His fine would be much less if he was caught hunting coyotes out of season than putting out poison.... He was not tharted from poison, but was tharted from shooting? Plus, he could have asked for a depred permit - the DEC prolly would have laughed at him I agrree on that.... However, they still sometimes give permits to those they laugh at.... Ridiculous, to the core...1 point

Not to impede on grows thread, but if you are on the main index page, and you scroll down to users online, if you hold your mouse over a username it will tell you where a user is. When i just looked at law he was peeking on my profile, not growys. LOL Edit: He's been n my profile for almost an hour now. When does the line between viewing and stalking become an issue?1 point

I don't use a dog. Unless you want to call Shawnhu a dog. We take turns. One guy pushes while the other waits. It's like a deer drive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Go to multiple dealers and shoot different models.....when you find something you like search eBay and archery talk like crazy.....you will find smokin deals on both sights. Once you get the bow take it to a local shop to setup and through them some business and buy a 1/2 dozen new arrows. I also recommend buying all accessories online as well....if you know what you want you will find sights, rests, and quivers way cheaper then in a pro shop. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

If you're not using a dog, then definitely go with a shotgun over a .22. As a kid I had good luck, kicking out rabbits , by stomping through brush piles and thick stuff on the edge of wet areas. Ponds or swampy areas.1 point
-
I went rabbit hunting for the first time last year and didn't use dogs we walked all day and only saw one.... I had a 22 and he moved into thick brush. Listen to espresso above if I had a 20 gauge I would have hit him on the run but the 22 wouldn't shot into the brush....I plan on getting back out there this year. I might bring the 22 for squirrels in September but never again for rabbit. Squirrels be very quiet and move very slow sometimes even just sit and look into the trees rabbits without a dog your going to have to trample on the thick brush piles and hope to jump them out. Good luck hope that helps.... I'm still trying to learn myself. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

After the past year of dismal license sales, down 2-4 million dollars from the previous year, I fear many more hunters will simply hang up their guns if they cannot hunt the buck of their choice.1 point
-
Because it is not really about buck management. Simply a political shell game. Watch the pea (the yearling buck.) The real goal is to reduce the deer herd, as was done in Pa., down now 40% in 10 years and headed lower. The buck zones with the highest deer population will see the most restrictive ARs. Hunters will not be able to shoot bucks there so they will whack the does. Simple. Mark my words. The deer population will tumble in the Lake Plains and Finger lake buck zones, just what the DEC wants.1 point

I've had a stiffy for a helicopter ride for many years. The opportunity has never come up to scratch that itch until this past weekend. My wife and I along with two other couples were invited by my boss to a fund raiser for Mercy Flight in Wilson, NY last Sunday. The people who donate the use of their property and probably many thousands of dollars are in the environmental remediation business in Niagara Falls NY. Their property is amazing! I heard (unconfirmed) that the same deal last year raised 500K, Part of the fun of the day was helicopter rides provided by Mercy Flight for $100/person. it was a no-brainer for me! It was only about a 10 minute flight but needless to say a real kick in the pants. The entire event was way over the top, easily the nicest shindig I've ever attended. Here are a few pics that I snapped with the telephone camera........................ There were two choppers running at one time!! Getting ready for takeoff! Note the size of the "landing pad"...... From the chopper, looking east towards Olcott. Note the pier in Olcott and in the distance the smoke stack at Somerset Power Project................. No big deal to most but it was something I always wanted to do but NOT from a stretcher.1 point

There is a stump in front of the tree. He stood on the stump and got it about six feet up. Said,he didn't want the deer to see the cam. At 11 he's learning fast!1 point

You just defeated your own purpose! Deer are not targeting people as a food source. When was the last time a fox or a squirrel attacked a human? Why don't you preach this to the parents of that 2 year old that a coyote came right into the garage, or better yet, talk this to that dude that was attacked while walking to work! And don't try that "Isolated Incident" crap anymore! It works like a busted toilet! Did I EVER state killing a coyote would help me or anyone kill a deer, rabbit, etc...? No, I did not. I did make a mention that they sure as hell do make it harder for us! Yes, yes I did! Now you will say again, I don't like the competition. NO! No I do not! To be honest, I don't think of them as competition! I think of them as a plague that once it takes over, that's all there is left! I absolutely refuse to make a comment on "Gods Dogs"! I have never shot first and ask questions later at anything! No I have never watched them, not like you mean. Let me ask you this Curmudgeon? Are you a hunter or do you just want to protect everything that can and will kill what you hunt?1 point

To be 100% honest last ten years or so I used the scent free soaps, but plenty of times when I'm out of it or shower at work prior to hunting I do use I.S.I've also eaten Life cereal most mornings for 40 or 45 years. I'm not against change, I justdont jump right into the first new thing that comes along....1 point

Whether we want to admit it or not, a release is a kind of a crutch. We don't usually use a crutch before something is broken. Let the need for a release drive itself and be the child's choice when, and if, he decides he needs it. Actually using fingers is the most natural and intuitive way of loosing an arrow. It is the easiest to teach and quite impossible to accidentally misfire.1 point

Duck Stamp revenue goes into the federal migratory bird conservation fund. This fund is used to acquire wetlands as well as uplands where many migratory birds nest. Nothing is kicked back to the states as in the Pittman Robertson program nor are funds handed over to non government organizations. Ducks Unlimited raises about the same amount of money as the duck stamp program. Upland organizations raise a lot of money too. And an federal upland stamp can add to that, but how would it be administered? The FWS administers the duck stamp program as they do the PR program. However, the management responsibility or jurisdiction of the FWS is migratory wildlife and threatened/endangered wildlife. Other wildlife, such as unlisted upland game, is the responsibility of the states. If the FWS starts to acquire priority upland habitat, then do they inherit the responsibility of managing it? Upland species thrive in ephemeral habitats - that means habitats that are temporary unless they are managed. Without management these lands will lose their ability tom support upland species. Or, is the idea to model the federal upland stamp after the Pittman Robertson Program and redistribute the money back to the states? I don't want to say that is not possible, but there are some issues. Each state would have to amend their assent laws to protect these funds from sweeping by the Legislature. Does New jersey get the same amount of money as Kansas - how will the distribution be handled? A lot to iron out..... Not saying to give up on a federal upland stamp, it intrigues me too. But in the meantime maybe start a chapter. I suggested to Bill Smidt he sarts a NWTF chapter. Maybe you can start a RGS or AW chapter. I heard that it can take many years of holding fund raising banquets before any revenue is generated and that chapter success depends on sticking with it. I heard some guys hold one or two banquets and give up.... It is my understanding it takes some time (years) and effort to get corporate sponsors to donate guns and other prizes and also time to get people involved....1 point
