Grandfathers Know Everything .... Hunter was 4 years old and was staying with his grandfather for a few days. He'd been playing outside with the other kids, when he came into the house and asked, 'Grandpa, what's that called when two people sleep in the same bedroom and one is on top of the other?' His Grandpa was a little taken aback, but he decided to tell him the truth. 'Well, Hunter, it's called sexual intercourse.’ ‘Oh,’ Little Hunter said, 'OK,' and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said angrily, 'Grandpa, it isn't called sexual intercourse,. It's called Bunk Beds , And Jimmy’s mom wants to talk to you.'11 points

Stopped into Walmart to pick up hunting license and noticed a little sheet hanging up on side of cooler with gun prices. After further inspection it was a huge sale with guns marked down up to 60% off! I ended up getting the Savage 220 20 gauge for $268 including tax. That was a 50% savings.6 points

I just wanna say thanks to this site and all the guys and gals on it. Being a rookie hunter I've learned a ton from you guys and look forward to learning more and maybe teaching someone new a few things I've learned through trial and error.6 points

That's one of the great things about this site. There is a lot of opinions and once in awhile some facts written here. Some of it is useful and factual, some is not. You do have to sift through it all and weigh the value. But you are absolutely right. There is a lot of good info that can be gathered here. And we all learn from each other including learning from those that might be new to hunting and who offer different perspectives and ask questions that make us think and discuss things that we may not have considered before. So we owe you a thank-you too.4 points

Just a side note. I can guarantee that he did not lose his license for a lifetime for one infraction of baiting. As Paul Harvey would say....the rest of the story3 points

Simply put all the deer I shot and did not recover where all from user error. If I would have put the arrow or bullet in the right spot it would have worked. . Funny how I have missed easy shots with the bow and high powered 30-06, 308 and 30-30 yet for some reason the 44 Mag has yet to miss. Funny how I can easily put quarter sized holes with guns and shoot very well with the bow yet still manage to mess up shots. Another reason we celebrate so much when everything actually does come together. I guess I am the opposite of using knock down power because the arrows and 44 mag are not exactly in the knock down power range. Many even consider the 30-30 underpowered yet with even a long bow most any game in NY can be taken. Shot placement is key.2 points

I know there is a bunch of diffrent ways to view the SD card from a trail camera,I figured I would share my new to me method for this year. I bought the external SD USB card reader and the USB adapter from best buy. Just plug the SD card into the reader and the phone automatically opens them, select all and save ,go on to the next camera and do the same thing ,it saves a bunch of time screwing around in the woods and allows for instant gratification.1 point

I am still thinking of applying for a DMP in 4A. Availability is low on #1, and none in #2. I still go to an agent for my license and tags, That way I can look things over and make sure the information is right. The point thing kinda stinks like a mule fart. The 'donating' $10 for points is like planting a $10 bill in the ground and hoping and waiting. I give you money, you give me what I paid for.1 point

My current favorite is the Sweet's 7.62...It is very aggressive and will get the copper fouling out, although it may take some swabbing..When you are done using it, be sure to run a couple of patches with oil or WD 40 through the bore to clean out the Sweet's ....1 point

I haven't seen a gun rack in store for Walmart in years. This is funny too, I was looking around for a slug barrel for the shotgun I bought, and there was a link to Wally-World with some odd link about redirect, this item is not for sale anymore ( that was the gun, not a barrel ). Maybe they are liquidating the stock of guns they have. Who knows. Congrats on the new gun at a great price.1 point

Some may be familiar with my shed dog, Fleur. I bred her to an 8 year-old chocolate male who was bred by Luck's Labs that has been waterfowl and upland hunted his whole life. The result was 8 puppies; 2 black males, 1 black female, 1 chocolate female, 1 yellow male, and 3 yellow females. $500 with a nonrefundable $100 deposit. Ready the weekend of 8/8 (7.5 weeks). These are bred to be really high drive/ high energy dogs, so if you are looking for just a pet you might be a little overwhelmed. The puppies cannot be registered due to a DNA discrepancy 4 generations back in Fleur's pedigree. This is why I am not asking 3x as much for the puppies. Fleur with her 1st ever unassisted find @ 7 months old: Same trip. Did I mention Fleur has a lot of energy? The puppies:1 point

I thought that you get a preference point when you apply and are not picked for a DMP. You should have had a point from last year.1 point

I'm not in that zone, but have noticed a recent decline in buck AND doe activity in the fields here lately. A bumper apple crop this year, with a few starting to drop seems to be keeping them in the timber until the sun goes down right now here in 9h. Our fields just got cut recently, so there's been a lot of commotion around them. It's been a predictable pattern here the last few seasons. That may also have something to do with it.1 point

As Finn Aagaard put it, the difference on plains game and not in theory of any cartridge from 7x57 through the big medium bore magnums is exactly nill. It's where you place it that counts. I still like fat and slow (kinda like me!) over light and fast. But that's just my gut preference.1 point

Busting a flock is definitely my first choice...I like to listen near known roost sites in the morning, and when the birds start tree talking I just walk in under the roost trees and flush them, hopefully in several directions.. However, many times you don't get a chance for a bust..Don't short change blind calling in the fall..Find an area with a lot of fresh scratching and just settle in and get comfortable...Call every few minutes with soft yelps and clucks, trying to sound like a contented feeding flock..Scratch in the leaves..I have called in entire flocks that way, as well as singles and small groups..1 point

I was just commenting on perspective yesterday with a 2nd year hunter. I could litterally hunt for over 70 years and still not see the same things a new hunter sees his first time out. This is why I do not care if this was your first time hunting ever or your 70th year, I want to hear all about the adventures we take and what THAT person observed that day! Doc you hit the nail on the head, as usual. I like to use the Bruce Lee method to hunting. Take what is useful and disregard the rest. What might work for one person might not work for another. Taking what you like and making it your own to fit your hunting needs. Like disregarding the hunter who told me smoking does not affect deer yesterday and scent control is just a gimmick.1 point

So, where are you getting your info from or drawing your conclusions? Just your anecdotal observations, correct? In certain areas, where pheasant stocked areas get heavy hunting pressure, a few things happen to grouse, first more get shot, but also, more get educated and harder to find or approach. However, grouse habitat needs disturbance and maintaining pheasant stocking areas provides excellent habitat for them as well as woodcock and other game and non game.Just because they are not there during hunting season, does not mean they are not using these areas during the breeding season or during other stages of their life cycle. And, to be frank, just because hunters are saying they are not seeing them, doesn't even mean they are not there or approachable. Case in point two old dudes telling me and my wife they haven't seen a G or W in 40 years "round here" We went 100 yards ( from the hunters parking area)and killed one of each..... And that isn't the first time that has happened either, it just never happened within 100 yards before.... Your are also alluding to competition. First, stocked birds don't survive long so they have little impact on native birds. Wild hatched pheasants, have been the subject of numerous studies and have not been implicated as competitors. There has been (one) study that had shown rooster pheasant will harass rooster prairie chickens ( a grouse ) on their leks, but same study did not definitively conclude any negative impact to the PC's reproduction. Not only was the correlation with PC and RNP weak, but the PC and pheasant only marginally overlap in habitat types. No studies I am aware of link pheasant to issues with ruffed grouse or other species. Even if some minor, compensatory impact existed, it would not outweigh the benefit of sustaining hunting and conservation funding, and it certainly would not outweigh the maintenance of ephemeral habitat which is a side benefit of pheasant stocking.1 point

Its first come first serve. Area is broken up into assigned lots. You arrive, park in an open lot and that's the lot you hunt in.1 point

This was a direct cut and paste from the website 2 days ago, yesterday it still said same thing. Today exception 4 is gone. This may be the one time the DEC actually listened to hunters and did something right lol. And after looking at the 2014-2015 deer season pdf from the website this was overlooked last year too. Wonder how many people used the previous years tag?1 point
