a mother Grouse and about 8-10 young ones, we pulled into the driveway and as we were walking to the house a bunch of birds took off from the tall grass at the edge of the woods and flew into the trees.....the little ones were about the size of Quail and landed in nearby trees, we went inside and watched as they slowly flew down and regrouped. I have never seen one baby Grouse let alone that many, cool stuff to say the least.3 points

Be aware that this poll may be sampling primarily more dedicated hunters than the general deer hunting population. Polls like this taken within a hunting forum may contain more respondents that more leaning toward the more dedicated side of hunting. So as a gage of member attitudes it might be quite representative, but as a gage of hunters in general, it may not be.3 points

I used to be hardcore before all the posting and leasing of land knocked a lot of hunters out of the game. I still take a week off for bow season and sit dark to dark trying for a 3 year old and up buck. Weekends I mix my time between bow hunting and going to the races and watching football. Just hasn't been the same since my father died even though it has been several years. The hunters being so selfish has taken a lot out of me too. The most fun I have every year is taking kids and first timers out and putting them on deer, and enjoying their moment with them. I already have a date with two young women for a repeat of last year even though one of them is too old and has to wait to shoot during the regular season. It makes me feel good that young women are comfortable enough around me to call and ask to go again. It is not always easy to reach teenagers in this age of electronics and cell phones.3 points

Took the 7600 to the range today, was everywhere but where i wanted to be. Thankfully I brought a bolt action 30-06 also, so I was able to redeem myself. A friend told me I should only own bolt actions,..... I'm starting to agree.2 points

I'd hunt it, no problem. The only worry I'd have was retrieving. Plant a crop not common to the area. Maybe radish oat mixture. Pull those doe in, and you will see bucks. Works for me, every season. Good luck!1 point

Thanks everyone it is only a week today but like I said it has been a lot easier then I thought this week would be. Got an even better vape setup yesterday. I do have a question for those that vape in the woods. What flavors do you vape while hunting. The 8 pointer I shot last year came in down wind from me while I was smoking at 20 yards & I have shot a few with bow & gun while smoking or just put the cig out. I am vaping an apple pie & a vinilla custard now just wondering what everyone else likes1 point

I'm pretty sure that isn't a wish for a Happy Labor Day. Somebody PM me the meaning as Google hasn't a clue either.1 point

So, we'd have to choose when to shoot our buck too. Gun season likely would be nothing but doe killing because our archery season will have included the buck kill. Fair is fair.1 point

Is the creek the only source of water thats on that property? if it is find a heavy trail from the corn field to the creek and hunt it, look for rubs and scrapes, wear scent eliminator to walk through the property don't want to disturb the area too much, those deer will love those pencil tree lines in the fields to travel.1 point

What Airedale said... For many years I hunted gobblers EVERY morning during season as long as I had a legal tag, and if my tags were full I would look for people to take out and call for them. I felt it was a SIN to miss a day of deer season as long as I had time off ( including before and after work) and was not tagged out. I also hunted waterfowl, pheasants, grouse, woodcock, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, coon, and LOTS of crows.. I traveled all over the USA and Canada to hunt deer, elk, moose, caribou, antelope, wild hogs, waterfowl, turkeys and pheasants.. Now that I'm older I occasionally miss a morning of spring gobbler season or deer season without feeling guilty about it...<<grin>>...1 point

Tax-exempt cigs from the Indians were close to $300 a month for me a year ago. (My mortgage is about that). I make my own juice and build my own coils now for about $5 a month. It's a no-brainer. A little nicotine during the day helps me focus when I'm working because I don't drink coffee, and the flavors are just oh-so-good. Now, if we can just keep the government from taking it away from us.... For anyone who cares here's a a link to a petition that might help: vapingpetition.com1 point

WNY buck hunter, If I shoot a buck in 1C I would be done with bucks for the season. And Since there is no doe harvest allowed in 3a, and never will be, I will not be able to hunt deer there. With the low amount of hunters, let alone successful hunters in 3a, the one buck rule will do virtually nothing in that area. So basically i will be giving up opportunity, in my case in the area that I grew to love the hunting tradition in, for no reason at all. Explain how that makes sense. Maybe I am slow on the uptake? I gun hunt on tens of thousands of acres in areas where virtually no one goes, yet somehow I'm supposed to start going somewhere else in another part of the state to look for a doe? That's what my gun season is reduced to? I realize I could save my buck tag by not using it for bow. But we have a 4 month bow season on Long Island. That is something that is unreasonable to ask me to do.1 point

I like to think I am hardcore, but I was indeed froze out that morning. Nothing worse than 33 degree freezing rain. Even hardcore people slip up once in a while. At least the steak and eggs were good.1 point

I will call you out on that wide brush stroke. How many antlerless did YOU shoot in the affected WMUs? I shot four this past season. Four. Not one, not two, not three....but FOUR. Bow, gun, and MZ. And I am not unique. My phone fills up with tons of people who lay down the does in these WMUs, even in bow. Debate all you want, you can go pound sand if I choose to pass on a doe in the first week of Nov. this season. I killed more than my "required" contribution to get the job done and will likely do so again this year. My mentality is precisely what the DEC needs - one that gets the job done, yet demands more of an organization that is inept and one that needs to work toward not being so. Compare that to people who complain, yet pass off everything as not being "the way things were" and displaying fear-mongering of taking a buck tag away to better manage a resource as if some social liberty is being compromised to the detriment of the old guard - and basically refusing to acknowledge that the management discipline is about as far from a fad as one can get. Quite frankly, its those people with their head in the sand that slow down the ability for adaptations that should be discussed or considered given the conditions. Add in the mix an agency who shoves it down our throats, and it's a pretty bad spot for people with my mentaility. You and the DEC make great partners in their current state. I like to think I'd be a great partner with what the DEC should be.1 point

I'd rather see a friend get something, than get myself something, I've shot over 50 buck and 3x that doe, hunting not hard, but I go out and enjoy the outdoors as a whole.1 point

If I see a hot doe during the rut and there is no buck behind her trailing - I am going to ANCHOR her to the ground with an arrow. Her being dead right at my stand is like having instant bait for the rest of the day.1 point

Thanks for the opinions guys. I can say that since I only own ~96 acres here in Cayuga county, he's #1 on my hit list, and actually the only one on my hit list. I am pretty sure he is a 3 year old. He hangs out in the same area that a nice 2 year old 8 point was last year so I think he is the same buck. I literally have a plethera of 1-2 year old bucks that could be something nice over the next couple years. But I know my neighbors hunting style too well and they don't let anything walk by that has antlers. I do try to take 3 plus year olds on my property and have been fairly successful doing so. Here in my area, with the given hunting pressure, a 3 year old is a good buck. Granted he may not add up to what some others would like, he's a shooter here.1 point

It is a very subjective question. I bought land to deer hunt on, spent a good amount of money, for me anyway. Plant a food plot every year, apple trees, set stands, etc. A non hunter would look at me like a die hard ,hardcore, fanatic. Truth is, if I shoot a deer I am happy. If not, the usual. lol.1 point

We mostly let the good bucks walk so we can shoot the great ones. He would look good over one of the young guys mantels and fill a void for one of the older fellas but for the middle group that guy would be one of the smaller ones hanging over the mantels, Thats the great thing about having choices. Went down to the park last week..13 bucks standing in a field of about 30 deer, 2 awesome 10 points in the field 1/2 hour before dark.120 range 10 minutes before dark all their heads come out of the alfalfa and look into the woods..A brute steps out all of 140 plus. Split brows and G2's with stickers. A view like that is what makes one let a 120 walk. Not everyone can do that..But have the choice to.1 point

A wonderful buck... So this is a good guy to kinda do a survey on. Would you burn your tag on this buck the first day of the season and end your year? Myself, This deer would get a pass this year. Anyone else have thoughts?1 point

LOL !!..Actually, Moog, I DO have a fixed 4x on my squirrel rifle, but I was hunting with a scattergun today.. With the heavy foiliage and the way the squirrels bounce around WAY up high in the treetops this time of the year, it is difficult enough to get a decent shot with a shotgun, much less a rifle..I think only ONE of the squirrels I shot this morning offered a stationary shot that I MIGHT have made with a rifle. I used my 1936 vintage Winchester Model 12 16 gauge with 1 oz. Remington game loads of #6 shot. It is full choke and it pops the squirrels out of the highest treetops with authority.1 point

I am not in favor of it. 1. As doc points out is a one size fits all plan without considering population and habitat and hunting pressure. 2. If it's true (as stated above) that only like 5 percent of hunters take a second buck, then what damage is that second buck really doing to the herd? Not much. 3. With basically a 3 to 4 month season depending upon where in NY you live, I really value the opportunity to tag a second buck if I choose. 4. Many ny hunters travel from downstate (nyc, Long Island)!to hunt. Ohio does not have this dynamic. If I shoot a buck on Long Island early in season, there goes my tourism dollars that I normally spend in 3a. (Can't shoot does there). 5. There are places in ny where deer numbers are low, Like ADK. Does should probably not be killed there. So if that's the only area you hunt, after you shoot one buck your season would be over. I do not know very much about Ohio, but unlike ny, isn't most if not all of the state the same type of habitat? Do they have areas that are over run with deer that need special attention?1 point
