  1. Although I held the door for little old ladies (music reference) at Tim Horton's this morning, I did another deed of greater importance later in the morning. I took a ride down to Canadice to retrieve trail cameras and hunt for sheds. I travel Middle Road all the time year round and pick up lots of trash when I have the time. There has been a TV in the ditch that I have been eye balling for 6 months. Some SOB tossed it late last summer IIRC and nobody else picked it up. Granted, it was rolled probably 25-30 feet down the bank and heavy as all get out. Today was the day that I had the time, gloves and right boots on my feet to get r done. Now the Town Of Amherst will get it........they have a drop off at the highway dept. I'll swing by some day this week and pitch it. In the mean time, if anybody wants it, holler. Did I mention it WAS heavy?

  3. They definitely are a good looking gun. A neighbor had one in .458 Win Magnum that he let me fire once and the recoil was surprisingly manageable. No doubt it's heavy weight helped a lot with that. If I ever did buy one, that's the caliber I would go with. If you are going to go big, why not go all the way? All of my non-muzzleloading rifles are Rugers now, and my next one will likely be an American in .243 caliber. That will only happen if one or both of my daughters develops an interest in deer hunting over the next few years. They are not quite old enough yet, but they sure like eating venison and it would be great if they would help out a bit with filling the freezer and not just emptying it. I can only dream of that day now however. Until then I will just keep doing what I can with my old M77 30/06.

  6. I've had quite a "trail cam" season since last fall. I got my first real bear video, multiple (including another today) bobcat videos and today...............my first fisher video. I took a screen shot with my phone for upload here since uploading video is painful with my DSL. If I get time later, maybe I'll load the video. Here's what you get now..........

  9. I saw this and thought it sums up the SCOTUS judicial appointment perfectly. I couldn't agree more. Jonah Goldberg: "All the Constitution says is that there has to be a Supreme Court. (Even the existence of lower federal courts is entirely optional). There's nothing holy, never mind constitutionally sacrosanct about the number nine. Congress could decide tomorrow to make the Supreme Court a body of 72 people picked randomly from the phonebook (so long as the president was the one doing the random picking and the Congress approved them). When the president, a former teacher of constitutional law, says, 'the Constitution is pretty clear' about the need for hearings on his pick, he's not telling the truth. He's playing politics. The same goes for all the Republican senators who say the Constitution is clear that they don't have to hold hearings if they don't want to. The issue isn't whether the Constitution is clear. The simple fact is that the Constitution is silent. And where the Constitution is silent, politics is supreme. ... We've invested in the Supreme Court powers never imagined by the framers. And when I say 'we' I mostly mean progressives. The growth of the administrative state and the encroachment of federal law into every nook and cranny of local life has been a century-long project of the left. It should be no surprise that when we bequeath monarchical powers to nine — or eight — lawyers, the battle for succession to one of the nine thrones will be ugly. Indeed, it's surprising it's not uglier."

  10. I've been eyeing a Ruger No. 1 in 375 h&h for a while now and the itch is becoming unbearable. I have no practical need for one since Africa might not ever be in my budget but it's so damn sexy. Geechee born and Geechee bred

Walk up the dike of my buddies pond to peak at the geese and find THIS..................... Let me tell you, I worked hard for that little bone! Oh well, all fun.

  14. I am an addicted rimfire fan and shooter and at the Syracuse Gun Show a few years ago there was a fellow with some Cooper Rifles. He had a Cooper Bolt Action Western Classic 22 LR that was so pretty it would bring tears to your eyes. That rifle had every custom touch there is to be had on it. The wood grain the best, the checkering the best, case coloured action and matching rings, octagon barrel, skeleton checkered buttplate, inletted sling studs and on and on along with a test target, one hole at fifty yards. I actually have had dreams about that one. Al

  15. A Barret 50 is definitely on the list as one of my next guns. And by next I'm talking within next 10 years. Biggest issue will be finding a range to shoot that large a bore at. You Can't Beat My Meat!

Yeah, Willy, I realized my mistake a few minutes after I made the post, but decided that wasn't worth the effort to change it, and probably nobody but some knobby kneed stump jumper named Woody would bother to bring it up... 29. I believe Mike started this thread with the best of intentions. It is unfortunate that it became personal. I found it an interesting exercise and instructive in a number of ways. What I am taking away from it is some people are really unclear on the concept of lead poisoning: what it is; what it does. Keep looking for mutants and neurological cripples as proof but realize that being "unclear on the concept" in itself may be a symptom. I'm done.

  31. You've missed the most important thing. Physical conditioning. Drawing bow is a particular kind of action that the body doesn't normally engage in. You are targeting and using very specific groups of muscles in a way they are not used to, by and large. If you jump in cold, there is always the risk of injury and strain. I work out regularly as a matter of course but I specifically target the bow drawing action using various levels of resistant exercise band wrapped around a support pole in my basement. The best technique needs to have the psychical support behind it to be effective.

  37. Because blackHorn 209 is the only non-corrosive muzzleloading powder. It's non-hygroscopic, meaning changes in the temperature or humidity will not affects its performance ,plus you can shoot 20 plus times with out swabbing the barrel. Steve

  39. Doc has made no false and misleading statements, he has stated facts and the facts speak for themselves. In case you are not aware high velocity lead core bullets have been around and used in large numbers for nearly 100 years and fired these days by the millions. Those early jacketed bullets had lousy performance and shed their jackets easily on impact. It would be safe say if there was the lead poisoning problem some Doomsdayers make it out to be there would have to be plenty of evidence by now! There is still zero credible concrete proof of any hunters and their families are getting lead poisoning from consuming meat taken with such bullets. Al

  40. I can see people doing that turkeyfeathers. I bet your wife deals with a lot of owner error being a vet. This was a tumor and now they are concerned it might be worse then they first thought a couple years ago. Huskies are a bit prone to this. She's home, 80% of her tail is shaved and it's all bandaged up. She's doing good, a little lazy as the meds are wearing off. Huge list of to do and not to do's for two weeks. I'm just a huge worrier and a huge softy when it comes to my girl.

  43. On pocket water, I tend to equate flyfishing W/"glorified cane pole fishing".
    1 point
  44. Early season flyfishing is mostly W/nymphs. Nymph fishing is a lot like drifting worms, in pocket water it can be a very short distance thing too. The main thing is to keep as much of your line out of faster/slower currents as you can. This will allow a natural drift through the feeding lanes of the trout. A poly-pro yarn strike indicator can help you see the line stop or twitch when a trout takes the nymph. Raise the rod @ any pause or twitch of the line. Use enough weight to keep your nymph just off the bottom. If you aren't getting hung up occasionally, you aren't getting deep enough.

  46. If you're trout fishing in NY you can do it with just a handful of flies. Some pheasant tail and hares ear nymphs, elk hair caddis, comparaduns, and some ants and beetles will catch every trout in the state from spring to fall
