  1. Here's my daughters 2013 xbow buck, she has been helping me on and off for the last month or so, she tucked one eye, (I did the 1st one to show her) built up the nose, and did a good amount of the airbrushing. Happy Dad!

  5. Depends on what you want. Single shot, revolver, semi? How far you plan to shoot? In a revolver, I would go with a 44 mag, which you could shoot 44 special out of, or load the .44 mag down a little if you are concerned about recoil. I used to use 200 gr bullets which recoiled a little less and still did a fantastic job on whitetails. Or a .45 Long Colt. Very manageable recoil and does a great job. Not a big fan of a .357 for deer. In a single shot like a T/C, the choices are many, 308,7-08, 35 rem, among many. I used to hunt exclusively with handguns years ago.

  6. Here is a novel idea. If you don't own it stay off it. Another novel idea; find out who owns the land, ask permission and offer to pay half the taxes! I post my land but it sure as hell isn't doing me any favors to incur the cost, time, and aggravation. Why should I, or any other landowner feel compelled to post their land as a "favor" for strangers who want to bumble about aimlessly in the woods. I just don't get what's so hard about this. It seems part of the same handout mentality. You got it and I don't, I want it and I'll take it if you won't give it to me and too bad if you don't like it...after all it's your fault because you've got it and I don't. Oh yeh...and I want it for free!

  9. Definitely not. My wife was belly crawling next to me in Wyoming when I shot my first antelope. And there always some sort of wild game for dinner. Funny though.

  11. My wife buys me hunting gear. Winchester 1300 and Winny ML years back, NWTF membership, snow shoes, and the list goes on. She doesn't hunt but loves the turkey and venison I bring home. Shes gets it, the woods are my happy place and I'm outta her hair.

  12. My buddy has the same gun. Think I'll ask to shoot it a bit. See how I like it and go from there. Leaning towards this one if i like it. $1 a shot isn't much more than shooting .22 rimfire these days

  13. It's more about the fit of the gun than the caliber when it comes to 'felt' recoil in a handgun.

  14. 10 rnd mag is perfectly legal. You're only allowed 6 squirrels, so you if you load the magazine with 7 rnds and use one as a sighter you're good to go.

  15. It some areas it could be done by making a list of what rifle rounds are legal and not legalizing high powered rounds. Say .357 Mag, .44 Mag, 454 Casull, etc. The list could be made up by figuring anything similar to the velocity of a shotgun slug or muzzle loader should be legal. If anything, it might sell a few more rifles in NY state. But maybe NY doesn't want that.

  16. Fortunately, The Mermaid is an old farm girl and grew up with the knowledge that meat comes from real live animals. Her dad raised and slaughtered his own cows, pigs and chickens, and he was an avid hunter besides. She prefers venison over beef. She is not interested in killing anything herself, but she enjoys eating the game and fish that I bring home.

  17. Ok. So. No cracks in the limbs. Just some screws and a rivet that popped, and a few scratches. Looks like the string is good. It's going to cost me 100-150. Much better than I expected. I'm praying he doesn't see anything else wrong with it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. same here. she got the full dose of hunting season for many years before we tied the knot. knew what she was getting into and likes venison. It, however is always a struggle with time. Hunting the right way takes time. With a young family you need to know when to compromise. Don't abuse the leash they give and do your part with chores and paying the bills and spend as much time as you can doing family stuff in the offseason and you should be fine She likes to track and is happy when i have success. She's thought about hunting, but i tend not to push it. Hunting is my sacred alone time. I love my wife, but i'm not sure i want her in the blind with me. She's shot her fair share of squirrels so i know she can do it. Maybe i'll get into duck hunting some day. i use this line all the time. Would you rather me out gambling and drinking? Or going to bed at 9:30 on a friday night so i can be up at 4:30? haha.

  25. So with the start of early bear season there is a bigger dilemma on how to care for your meat after the bear is down. It was in the high 80's this weekend and I saw some reports of bear being taken. I would imagine you kill the bear, gut it and get it to the nearest cooler (processor) around ASAP. I saw some pictures of bears hanging and actually you can see flies on the bear. I think when hunting early season you must have a game plan especially if the shot is not good and you recover the next day. I'm sure the meat would not be consumable.

  26. I've trained myself to always draw with my trigger finger behind the trigger, actually pushing the trigger forward. Having shot with my fingers for many, many years, I found it almost impossible to retrain my brain to keep my finger from occasionally putting pressure on the trigger of a mechanical release during the draw. Even the release-to-fire setup didn't work for me, but I haven't had an inadvertent release since. It acts like a safety: my finger doesn't move to the 'active' position 'til I'm ready to shoot. One less thing to think about when the adrenaline is going.

  27. My son sent me these pics from my new food plot this year in 7S. The dates are wrong as he had alot of cameras to do and didnt have time to set dates / time. These were taken a week ago and my stand is located about 75 yds into the woods on a travel route.

  28. So I am against baiting, ESPECIALLY using store bought, chem lab enhanced products. Last year I found a pile of something that turned in to white mold on a property I lease and I looked around and sure enough there was a trial cam pointed right at it. The whole area stunk and I had my only stand set up a few yards away. That aside, I do have to laugh at some of the arguments...especially when it comes to food plots / trees and using nature's bait for you. For example. Why is it that the man who has access to hunt near an apple tree and shoots a deer eating the apples will make it seem like he is a more skilled and righteous hunter than the person who doesn't have an apple tree and illegally dropped apples? That makes you a legal hunter, and in my opinion more ethical one. But don't kid yourself and say that you are a more skilled or righteous hunter. You both shot deer that were baited to the apples. One was just fortunate enough to have the tree on their property. This is coming from one of those hunters who is lucky enough to hunt a farm.

  30. Anyone else get surprised and end up with a DMP? I thought I was just donating $10 to the state but I was shocked to see I ended up getting a DMP that works out for both my home and right behind where I work. (Nothing better than being able to rush out behind my work and hunt for an hour before dark) Let the count down begin.

  33. I thought NYC was big but after being in Shanghai It now appears small in comparison. The food is different not like the Chineese places in NY. One good thing there is no tipping in China it's considered an insult. The last I wanted to do was insult the Chineese. Dave

  34. I agree with SteveB. As far as I'm concerned this goes far beyond what is legal, it is a matter of respect, or rather disrespect in many cases. People who actively trespass and feel the need to find excuses and loopholes to back up their trespassing ways are scum bags in my opinion, and poorly represent hunters and hunting overall.Trespassers, poachers, jacking deer at night by spotlight and so on all fall into the same category as far as I'm concerned. What is even sicker is when adults drag their kids around teaching them the same crap.

  35. If you read the NYON article, it's mainly retailers complaining about not being able to sell the 200+# Xbows they took from their suppliers. Pretty sure Biz is right, new Xbow regs simply carried over some of older ones which were originally used to describe the length, width, draw wgt of a Xbow as a legal implements in NYS. BTW - A Xbow's 3X the draw weight (~180# vs 60#) of a compound does NOT equate to proportional increases in fps. My 10pt is 180# and shoots somewhere in the range of 330fps with ~100Ke. Much better performance than compounds of the 1990's era, but pretty similiar fps/Ke as most compound models on the current market.

  37. This is my first time seeing this program, and I must applaud this group/effort. As a medically retired veteran, I can say that things like hunting/fishing are completely overlooked by the various "veteran friendly" groups out there. It is REALLY nice to see something like this. I am getting a new bass boat next spring, and would very much like to be a part of this if I could. My disability does not prevent me from hunting or fishing, and I would really love to help those in a different situation than mine. I hunt private land (not owned by me), so I can't help there, but I would love to offer the use of my boat and/or myself for this project. My current boat is not registered for the year, or I would offer that as well. Please let me know how I can be of assistance with this. Joshua

  39. Yup, There are all kinds of big deer that have been taken in our area that had never been seen before. Some of that might be that they never were here before and got driven into the area by the orange army, or perhaps rut has pulled them into the area temporarily. Or maybe they simply are far better at avoiding us than we ever could imagine. Even with the advent of cameras everywhere, the big guys are pretty good at staying out of the picture. Those that I have seen, are seldom seen more than once.

  43. Thanks, glad I can entertain! He was not at full charge, but coming quickly. The terrain was pitched downhill and I think that's what kept him at a slower pace. The images of the hind legs moving up and down at the "hips" will never be erased from my memory. I would also consider myself more lucky than "skilled." I shot less than 10 shells in my life before that happened (I'm a very new hunter). By the time picked up the old Remington and had him in my scope, it's head took up the entire sight. Thankfully, I hit him in the throat and didnt ruin the skull, which i had bleached (picking it up when the rug is done). It still seems surreal when I think about it.

  44. That was my assumption - he was interested in the peanut butter. I did not have a drop cloth, but quickly learned that their fur is extremely resilient to anything you would encounter in the woods; especially because I was dragging it at a snail's pace.

  45. Last year, while whitetail hunting the southern zone I was on a log eating lunch and heard something moving quickly behind me - I turned around and it was a black blear beelining at me. I dropped my lunch, quickly picked the rifle up off of my lap and luckily, hit it in the throat and dropped it instantly. It was 25 footsteps from me when I got it. It took me four hours to drag it to an area where I had reception to call for backup; another hour with two additional guys to get it too a truck. As said above - it gets caught on everything, small stones, brush, rock walls, etc. Dragging 295lbs of dead weight is not what I had planned for. My friends family has had this camp for 30 years and has never seen a bear. You truly dont know what you can enounter in the woods. Thankfully I had my 30-06 and luck on my side that day. My rug should be done any week now!

  48. Really? Do you really think there will be that many guys out there? Maybe it depends on where you live, but here in Ontario County, I will guarantee that I will never see a bear hunter even on state land. Oh, maybe the first year or two until they realize how totally unrealistic it is to go out hunting specifically for bears only. I imagine that most places will see more pressure from small game hunters than bear hunters......unless guys start sneaking bait out there and setting up illegal operations .... lol.
