  6. Hunting on Thanksgiving, I see fresh dirt on snow by a boulder. Get closer and see an opening under it. Peer in and see a bear less than 6 feet away. I must have woke it up. It let me look in for a minute or two. I waited close by for it to come out. Decided it was a youngster and didn't shoot. It went back in before I could get a picture of it though. Flip phone sucks for pics. I couldn't get a picture of it in that dark hole either.

  7. Plan worked and his suffering has ended and he was legally tagged. Great group effort. 4 shots total 1st skimmed him low, and the 4th put him down. 2 and 3 were misses. Holy adrenaline!!!! His right rear hoof was like a crooked club foot which was very swollen and bleeding. The other wound he had was his left front leg, six inches above the hoof, he had a perfect slug hole. This deer was shot at on a neighboring property and came over to hide. He could barely walk let alone run away. Glad the coyotes didn't get him.

  9. 9H. 39 degrees. 5 mph SSW wind. Dang it , daughter still sick with fever and little dizzy. Didn't go with us to dinner last night either. Today was her last chance of gun season. Only made it to opener and missed yesterday as well. She's pretty bummed. Gotta say I am too. All the efforts we put in to sighting in gun, shooting , scouting etc. She has one day she can hunt ML Some snow left here which makes it so much easier to see the deer. Maybe today I'll see something bigger than a golden retriever. Good luck to everyone going out today. Oh yeah , Kohls , Target and Wally World were slammin when I drove by. There's absolutely nothing I need from Walmart to get me up this early to go shop. Lol But to sit in the woods , priceless !

  10. On and off light rain. Im fine but daughter who hunts a few hours a year does not have rain gear . All I want this gun season is one buck to pass her stand

  15. Well I went into the creepy locked room. There's another even creepier crawl space or something in the back corner that I heard some noises coming from. Freaked me out so I got the F out of there! I can only imagine what I'd hear in the basement...[emoji15]

  16. I don’t care what side of the AR issue you are on. I’m going to make a suggestion: Spend more time hunting and less time worrying about what the other guy is doing or shooting. It’s none of your business As long as they are following the rules there’s nothing you can do about anyways. Maybe then you can shoot 9 P&Y bucks. Here’s another suggestion for you if you can’t do that then it’s time to quit hunting because you no enjoying yourself, find something else to do like maybe join the Democratic party or maybe PETA.

  18. Back in the old days, it was those drivers that went through the thickest crap where still-hunting simply too noisy to be practical. Even trying to get through these rose-infested thickets to set up a stand is not practical without alerting every deer hunkered down in there for the day. It was the big drives that dislodged the deer out of their hidey-holes where otherwise the deer would have been content to stay until dark. So now that most of these big outfits have all dissolved, after opening morning you have the deer that are hunkered down in these impenetrable thickets for the day, and the hunters that are hunkered down for the day, and absolutely no deer moving, and the dead quiet, and boring silence of nothing going on at all. Yeah, the big drives can be a bit dangerous with some of the sloppy set-ups and execution. And I eventually got away from participating myself because I didn't always feel that some of the snap-shooting that went on were safe enough to suit me. I eventually started paying attention to where these big drives would always set up, and then I would get into a position to take advantage of the deer that always squirted out the sides of these thickets and took off up the hill. We may not have had as many deer back then, but the deer did move all day. But since the demise of the big traveling drives, I have also noted entire days going by without hearing a shot from me or anyone else in the entire valley and valleys beyond. That's not a real nice or interesting way to spend the day either.

  19. Up in my haunted house blind this morning. Even spookier getting in here in the dark haha. I've got all day to hunt. Don't have to be in to work until 7. I hope I can put a nice buck down today. I'm at least nice and recharged this morning. I passed out on the couch last night at 6. Must of crawled into bed at some point cause I woke up there at 5:03 am ready to hunt. After being awake for 42 hours that sleep felt awesome. Was up early enough to take a drive to town for a coffee and cigar. Now I'm nestled in my haunted house ready to roll. Just had a doe walk in front of me 20 yards out. Not a clue in the world I'm up here.

  20. Thanks for all the replies everyone. We have formulated a plan for tomorrow to get the guys who do have tags set up and will try to end his suffering. He obviously is hurt but was able to escape us but hopefully we can catch him tomorrow. If he does come past me, I know what to do. Had my buddy not filled his buck tag on the previous drive, it would have been a different outcome today morally speaking. Thanks again for the reassurance.

  21. Never feel guilty for obeying the game laws...You had good reason to at last HOPE that one of your buddies with a buck tag might get a chance at that buck... I had something similar happen a few years back in PA.. The biggest black bear I have ever seen hobbled past me 30 yards away on 3 legs, with one foreleg obviously smashed and bleeding from a gunshot. I did not have a bear tag ( I want a bear like I want another hole in my head) but my partner had a tag. I would have loved to finish the bear off, but held fire due to not having a tag, and hoped someone else would get the bear and put it out of it's misery. I felt bad for the bear and wished I had bought a tag, but I never for a minute felt guilty for not breaking the law, an act that might have cost me $$$$ just to euthanize an animal that I had no desire to possess...Just one of those things that happens... Who knows, perhaps old Yogi survived the wound...

  22. I have strong feelings about this topic. As Doc posted, I think we have trouble getting people interested in hunting, and the fewer people involved, the fewer people care about keeping hunting alive. Making it more difficult to have success means fewer hunters. I am what I refer to as an "old school" hunter. I don't have time to use trail cameras, scout very much, and I only gun hunt-I bust my tail before deer season getting ahead at work and with personal chores to have some time to hunt during gun season. I am happy to see some deer and maybe shoot a buck and/or a doe. Despite hunting for over 35 years, I still get pleasure out of shooting a small buck. I don't shoot more than I have tags for and don't have anyone tag my buck so I can keep hunting. I shot a spike the first day this year, and am spending my time now trying to fill a doe tag. If I were to see a slammer, oh well, it sucks to be me-but it's not something that will keep me awake at nights-I made my choice. i hunted for 15 years before I shot my first "trophy buck" an 8 pointer that probably would score 95-100. If I couldnt have shot some smaller bucks along the way, I might have lost interest. I miss the days when people would congratulate you on any deer harvested- not laugh about it being a spike or even a button buck. Will

  25. I got out of the haunted house around 10. Walked to the other end of the field and pulled a card from a cam. Walked back to the house and had some lunch and looked at the pics from the card. Lots of deer moving in and out of the field but most of the movement is at night. There's one decent 8 point that's been coming in to the field almost every day right around dark. Even though he's not what I would call a shooter....I'm getting really itchy.....struck out on bow tag, I can't let my gun tag go to waste. Really need to add some meat to the freezer as well. Might have to let the muzzy bark tonight if he steps out....

  28. Obama has reigned over the most racist administration in the history of America. He has divided everyone on the basis of ethnicity and income. Calling Trump's picks racist is a desperate attempt to destroy his ability to make America great again, which, if successful, would be a death blow to the dumbass Democrat party.

  32. ATbuckhunter. Even wearing a brown Carhart and antlers nobody should "look" like a deer. adrenaline or not. People getting shot mistaken for a deer is so sad. But also there are so many idiots in this world on the other side of the coin. Been hunting from ground blind we built. Orange hats and vests get hung outside the blind as they don't do us any good in the blind. We leave the blind , we put on the orange. This year seems to be terrible in accidental shootings. Sad

  42. Many upstate NY voters don't vote, because they feel it's a waste of time. If upstate seceded from downstate, I bet that would change big time. I think that's when you would see upstate go at least 80% GOP.

  43. I'm not concerned with a guy taking a buck with a bow and another with a rifle. I am concerned with a guy taking multiple bucks with bow or rifle and using other peoples tags.

  44. After this week, most state lands will be seeing a dramatic drop in hunters. The deer will calm down and move back in. Though they will be a bit spooky. They will be there. In recent years, this is how it's played out after Thanksgiving, on the state land in my area. The last two weeks of the season, is almost void of hunters. This is when most of the state lands bigger bucks are taken. This is the time for the experienced, persistent hunter to shine!
