Hello All, I was interested in doing an ADK big woods back country hunt and was wondering if anyone has any experience planning one of these? I read the below article and seems like this is a hunt I definitely want to do: http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/deer-hunting/finding-deer-hunt/2013/10/whitetail-empire I want to enter from the south as I am located in NYC and am looking for a 3-4 day trip, so don't want to spend a lot of travel time driving there. How would I go about planning entry and understanding where I can camp and hunt. This is all very new to me so appreciate any tips you can offer. I am looking to go around the Nov 11th if anyone has any interest as well. BK

Layering system. You can shed and add clothing depending on your body temperature. If you're going to be walking in further you need to go in with less clothing and then add once you are posted. Big bulky clothing is a waste in my opinion. You need a good base layer, mid weight later, heavy mid layer and a good outer layer.

Hopefully one day I will get to hunt them. That's a dream for me currently.

Most important thing is to dress in layers. Sitka just came out with a "white tail" hunting line. Their clothing is designed to be a layering system. You are gonna pay for it though. They do however put their clothing through rigorous testing before releasing it to market, and I have heard nothing but good things about their clothing. -
From what I have found out while researching, if you shoot a lower poundage bow you should shoot fixed blades and if you shoot higher poundage you can shoot either fixed our mechanical. Also, if you shoot mechanical you should shoot a shorter head to eliminate extra drag like the muzzy trocar.

In the past we would peel the skin from the rear and then slice down the back of the front legs and hack saw the spine towards the skull. I have been doing a lot of research about western hunting, and I see them slice all the way up the top of the skull and create a Y incision to each antler. This seemed weird to me. How does everyone else cape their animals for taxidermist?

Yea Kifaru's run higher than that. Worth looking into though if you ever want to upgrade. My recommendation though is to try all of them on. Packs will fit everyone differently. Find the one that feels the best. Also when you try them on try to throw some weight in there. Your intended purpose will have you walking out with a 50-70 pound load so you want to see how that will feel.

What's your budget? You can look into Kifaru which I bought. It is pricey, but you can use it for hunting out west if you were ever thinking about doing that.

I always aim right behind the should as you stated. Less room for error, and if the shot is placed properly a very quick humane end. It might cost you some meat, but you know it will put the animal down and its humane.

Some have glue. You may need to apply a little heat.

I just bought one of those wind checkers for this upcoming season. Small bottle with odorless powder. I will use that to pick and choose how I hunt the property each day.

I bought the lifetime license this year. I received my tags, but I have not received the actual card that shows you are a lifetime license holder.

I dunno if its just me but that tail looks long? Don't Bob cats have short stubby tails?

I have a whole shoulder in the freezer, and I was toying around with the idea of smoking the whole thing. Has anyone ever done this before and if so have a recipe available? Is this just a bad idea all around and am I better of just braising the thing?

I'm very picky with my hunting gear, so rather pick it out myself. Personally I would love getting the value on a gift card since my CC bill each month is a very strong reminder that I have a problem.

They have sites that have 5 pins with the 5th being a slider. You get the best of both worlds really. That last pin can be used for any really long shots and you can dial the other pins between 20-50 yards.

As would I in order to get the time off. Maybe head out on a Fri night Sat morning and head back Tuesday evening. Nothing to far or long but enough to get the camping/hunting experience. Anyone that has done one of these trips and wouldn't mind company or anyone interested in joining let me know. I'm a newbie at that to, but would be a good chance to test some gear and meet some fellow hunters. Also good to do those back country trips with people as a matter of safety.

I'm looking forward to getting out there. Going up mid Sept to add a few more stands and hope to get a little in while I walk the woods and scout. I also like to do a little on Sunday's after the morning deer hunts since I need to drive a ways to get home and don't have time to deal with a deer if I got one during an afternoon hunt. Squirrels are pretty easy to clean up then jump in the car and go.

Also interested. I wouldn't mind setting up a back country hunt. Head up north somewhere and spike camp for a few days and hunt. Also interested in any small game or waterfowl hunts as well. I'm located in Queens, so not to far from you.

The buck in the last picture ain't to shabby either.

I don't think its the age, but more if you are shooting tight groups and they are slamming into each other on impact. I test mine after each shot. Give them a quick bend in each directing up and down the shaft. If I don't hear any cracking I'm good to go. That's one of the reasons I try not to shoot at one target with multiple arrows and opt for the 5 bulls eye blocks.

Terry, So have I. I was listening to a podcast with the CEO of the NDA and his stats were that there are 14 million hunters in the country and only 1% of them join a group to support our cause. That's pretty pathetic if you ask me. The $35 it cost me to help protect my hunting future and conserve land. I try to join as many as I can. Hopefully when not just hunter but a larger portion of americans (Hikers, anglers bird watchers etc) realize they are getting screwed something may change. This is not just a hunting issue.

Crown Heights is an up and coming neighborhood. Not there yet comparable to Harlem but not horrible. To be honest, there really aren't to many horrible neighborhoods left in Manhattan. Anything old and crummy is being torn down for new luxury apartments.
