Thanks for the boost guys i appreciate it.. I sound have added, im pretty sure he's still alive, he clotted up after about 3/4 of a mile and never bedded down, no pools of blood.. Getting back after it tomorrow.

Was out yesterday morning.. beautiful SW wind, first cold spell. One of those perfect mornings. About 7:45 i catch movement, and see a wide 4 pointer coming down the trail.. Thats about where it all went wrong .. I waited until he was behind a tree at 15 yds to stand and draw. pin low behind his shoulder. At the shot i saw my lumenock'd arrow deflect right off of an unseen twig and the arrow hit above the guts and what looked like under the spine. The deer hauled ass from there as i began to feel more and more terrible. After 3 hours i got down.. with no exit hole, blood was minimal at best. few drops every 10 yds or so. i tracked him for 8 hours until the rain started then walked the ridges until dark.. he never bedded down and the arrow never came out.. I've only lost one other deer that Ive hit in 18 hunting seasons.. It never feels any better.

i hunt em both. i perfer mornings though.. i'll track in the dark if i get one, but id rather do it in the light

I carry a Remington 760 pump in 30-06 carbine.. with a nixon 3x9 its about 7 pounds.. perfect for tracking all day and the short barrel makes it swing amazing on a moving deer

Hunt the wind.... No amount of scent killer can get rid of your scent.. If you play the wind correctly, you can spell like potpurri and gas station and it wont matter

Had it happen Monday night!!! I had a headwind of 8-10mph coming from where the deer came out.. half hour before dark, a buck and 3 doe come out and start heading my way.. The wind had died to an almost stop.. The buck got to 23 yards behind some trees and needed to take another 2 steps top be in the open for a shot. He stood there for 2-3 minutes and then calmly turned and walked right back down to where he came from.. He never snorted, never looked at me, didnt even run, he just knew something was off and turned around. Only thing i can think is that when the wind died, he caught a bit of my thermals coming down the hill with the evening cooling, and that was enough for him... I guess they dont get to be old without learning a few things. Deer, with the exception of the rut, will always air on the side of caution.

why not just replace the bow tags? you'll have the rest back in a few weeks before u need them?

.243 is a nice light gun, but from what ive seen, they dont always drop deer quick.. Maybe a 308?

I havent been down to our place in S Otselic yet, but the bachelor herd im watchin in Syr did the same thing... The big 8 vanished 2 weeks ago, the smaller 8 and 3 young ones are still hanging together

I cleared out a few at 3-4 of my stand sites this year.. First time doing it.. I didnt use any scents/attractants/ just cleared them out with a stick.. It'll be interesting to see if their being used this week

Its unavoidable on some state land.. I bowhunted one spot last season that i know a few other guys hunted as well.. I was in the woods about an hour before light each day i hunted there, and never had problems.. I talked to one of the guys who had climbing stick near my ladder stand late in the season and he goes,"what do you sleep in the stand? you beat my everyday!" We eventually worked out schedules so we could both get in there, but it never hurts to be the early bird

Can't wait till Saturday!! Got one day to hunt Northern tier with my remaining bow tag from last year, and on to Southern tier Monday am..., Goodluck fellas..
