  1. I wondered where Babba's been, ha fishing .
  2. Gavin Halls Dad works for the same FD as myself nice guy . Funny thing, when the FD has a local tournament , we're generally banned from the course the next year..... Gavin finished -5 and leads Porter Cup.
  3. Sure it may require drilling holes through your bows limbs though .
  4. Eddie a good 3 hours of rain in Webster north of 104 . hope the farm is getting it plus more, they did get one inch last week and really could use much more .
  5. I have an elaborate and sophisticated system for hanging my bow, I pounded two nails partway into the basement wall .
  6. Yesterday at work across from the firehouse , this guy dug through the cigarette can and came up with a good sized one. Lit it up and walked over to the church for a free meal .
  7. Of all land owners , hunters are least likely to open their land to others hunting , with farmers close behind . One needs to seek out folks who've inherited land, investors , folks with big houses on 10 or 20 wooded acres ,other rec. owners ( summer camps, snowmobilers ).

    Beer

Popped the top , after work pool beer .
  9. As far as bow and gun in the same woods at the same time that would be harder, but I do get relaxed deer under my stands in gun season . Two friends hunt a horse farm near me , the owners don't allow guns anytime, they do really well with their bows in gun season, sorounded by neighbors all gun hunting .
  10. One can do a diy hunt in Montana for week , for less then many pay in taxes on land/ cabin here in NYS .
  11. Tens of millions of dollars to NC is about equal to what I lose in the couch cushions in a week . Lol
  12. Cutting it one week end a month would be fine. This year is rare I know , but I just cut my shooting range for the first time, and honestly I could have shot without cutting it first . Most years I just cut it 2x, a yard sure a few more times . Drove in a lane way 900 feet in my Buick, the lane has not been cut once this year.
  13. Steve makes a good point , find the owner. Often farmers rent a lot,of land Yet everyone thinks they own it . We own farm land and rent it to farmers ( wife's cousins ) I can't count the number of times people, contact them asking to,hunt, hike, shoot whatever . He just tells them no ,sometimes refers them to,me. Not long ago we were shooting a AK 47 with bump stock ( fires like a full auto) and neighbors called farmer, so sometimes there is a benefit ....
  14. Grampy, I'm confused . DMP are only good for the one unit you apply for , not the anywhere in the state. My landowner permits were simply a regular DMP issued first to owners of 50 acres in said unit .
  15. Look neat,go early like now , bring your daughter , offer to help . I live east of Rochester my self , and hunt south of here on prime farm land , wife's from one of the largest farm families in Ontairo county , so I know a few farmers. Dispite what you'll hear, there are still farms that will let People on, I knew three near me, down to two as yesterday I saw one posted for the first time . If I knew you personally I'd give you a lead but I value my standing in the area to much give the nod to a stranger . Ask around everywhere , work , your Doctors office , your kids teams , you'd be surprised who, owns land and would let someone they know on, more so the a door knocker . My nephew's financial advisor has 1,500 acres and my nephew is the only one he lets hunt it. He got access when he mentioned he was going out deer hunting the next week end during one of their meetings . I also know of a couple of teachers that hunt a nice piece of cover along one of our farm fields. The land owner doesn't hunt , one of the teachers taught his kid , and the land owner liked the idea of a couple teachers he knew and trusted hunting it and keeping the local trespassers off . Farmers all either hunt or have friends and workers who do, it's one of the landowners with the least chance of getting on really . My split broilers are starting to smoke pretty good gotta go !

    Beer

Gun cleaning beer, complements of Rockspek ! Thanks again nice meeting you , the Dogfish 120 is for after dinner.
  19. Ya even years ago there were only two sources for the arrows , I just tossed a bunch of swedged 2117's that were coated to,look like cedar not to long ago , should have kept them.
  20. The" landowners permits "are simply normal doe tags given out first to owners of over 50 acres I believe . I don't even bother anymore , my area gives out permits like candy . Now Dmap ones are the way to go, extra permits based upon crop damage and such .
  21. I have much respect for traditional guys. Some day I may try it my friend in Seattle always breaks my balls about my bow with training wheels.... He hunts with buys made by Glen St, Charles and Bill Stewert . He's a friend of the St Charles family and actually owns half Glen's work bench ( other half is in P&Y museum ) . I met Glen at his shop North West Archery many moons ago, close as I come to being a trad guy. Bow Guy, I have a bunch of Mangus two blade swedged heads, what you call glue on I believe , if you're interested , I shot a swedged arrow with 5 inch feathers , fingers off my first compound for dozen years or so.

    Stands

My ladders are up year round, straps loosened , the ones I wanted to move were moved in March I think . Some hang ons are in plastic bags under the tree, I drop, them place in bags then check cables and straps before they go back up. Not a fan of exposing them to wet and sun year round . Other hang ons will go up soon, all in one day , I try to time it with the farm bush hogging , bull dozing trees , cutting hay , cleaning out drainage ditches and such . With climbing sticks and using the same tree, so no or little trimming I can hang one in a few minutes and be gone til Oct . I have perhaps two new spots to hang them this year as well. I have no cams out yet, tomorrow I may hang a couple . I love seeing the pics. But I know I have good bucks around each year and I know the travel routes, so I'd rather just stay away .
  23. Always used fixed cut on contact, last year bought some Rage . Shot one buck he died, to small of a sample size for me to see if I'll stick with them. Your bow should shoot fieldpoints and broadheads the same anyway, I always viewed mechanicals as a solution in search of a problem ,yep the deer died same as all the ones I shot with fixed ...... On the cost ,I did not see a big deal, bought 3 heads should last me 3 years . On the subject of "knock offs" im not a fan of "knock offs," " just like," " almost as good as " type products . I'll stick with the orignals thank you, the guys who did all the R&D , the marketing incurred all the costs , made something so successful it caught the eye of the thieves who make knock, offs. Want to save money buy some fixed Mangus or Zwickey's for $8 a pop and just resharpen it after each kill .
  24. Myself I don't pre season scout, it's what I see during the seasons that determine where I place my stands. My ladders that I moved this year was done late winter , my hang ons tend to,go in the same areas each year and they are not more then 30 or 40 yards in from crop fields, same for most of my ladders . I stay out of my spot as much as possible till hunting season . I seldom use scents, rattle , or call , although many have great luck doing so. I don't make scrapes many do that's just me . I try to disturb the area as little as possible . Now I hunt a great area 90 acres in the middle of crop fields, one going a mile or so to the south of me. I have thick bedding areas I never set foot in, out side of shed hunting them once in April . Many of the Bucks I get on camera I'll see during the season, some ill get pics of when guys kill them across the road.... But most still bed and travel through my spot. I'd also buy more stands if you just have one, they go on sale at the end of the season pick one up each year if you can . The longer you, hunt the spot you'll see where they tend to move , adjust stands accordingly over the years . Hunt the rut as much as possible , I've found bucks on a mission tend to slip up from time to time , while bucks just slipping through the woods slowly are far more in tune to the slightest noise or movement, and of course your scent . Last bow season a slob I never saw come in started to make a scrape ,my boot made the slightest squeak and he ran off as fast as possible . Same stand in the rut a decent buck on a mission ( in a hurry head down) came in I stood pulled back, he passed me I had to let off ,turn as he went right under but behind me ,swing around to the other side re draw try to stop him with a " burp "( he did) and I killed him at 10 yards . When he came in he was a top a slope and we were at the same height this is when I had to first stand as he was coming fast, he never picked up on it . In a nut shell, more stands, hunt the rut , and disturb the area as little as possible . Deer want to be where other deer are and hunters aren't .im lucky I have great cover, tons of food and 30 years of watching them during the season . Good luck . Boy that was long ...,.
