  1. put a 2nd cam back out tonight on my 5 acre spot after work... plenty of fresh tracks and 2 freshened up scrapes.. had about 8-10 does watching me put the cam around the tree.. had about an hour so I did have my shotgun loaded just incase but they were 60 yds off of the property... i guess tonight was their lucky night!! To be continued Friday afternoon...
  2. Agreed.... my problem is my schedule has been full at work... should've taken more days off because weekends there has been heavy pressure on deer, and weekdays I only get an hour or two to sit.. not enough to get a crack at a mature deer
  3. My cousin has 40 acres, about 30 of which are wooded and it needs a food plot or two. Been seeing and hearing some turkey during deer season. Lots of pressure there during gun in 3 different directions so it will need to be hunted differently. Neighbors I can tell are aggressive and free shooters unfortunately. Stands need to be moved and facing different directions... Deer are very very smart there which I am not used to... My main spot is 5 acres in the suburbs where human foot scent and noises are more natural and deer don't spook very easily..
  4. What a beautiful dog. Thank you for sharing with us. I'm so very sorry. 16 years of love
  5. Haha. Wear a little orange. I went out with my xbow this morning and had some deer moving. Low pressure in my one 5 acre spot... Trying to get my xbow's first kill. Good luck..
  6. From field to bedding with the crossbow today. Have a couple fawns in next to me had a fork pushing them around little bit ago. After 5 shots in about 6 seconds by the neighbor I'm not seeing anything else move. Amateur. Good luck all
  7. 5 acres private, a friend, where i see deer 95% of the time... Neighbors don't hunt! 300 acre swamp across the street. 40 acres private, a cousin, where i see deer probably 25% of the time... Lots of pressure in 3 different directions unfortunately.. Been very difficult to pattern deer this year there.
  8. I would keep your scent out of the thick stuff and use either a doe bleat can or rattling. That will spark curiosity without spooking anything. I've shot bucks late season after rattling sequences. You're spot on with the deer movement times... That's what I'm seeing too.. Good luck!
  9. my 88 year old grandma says that.... my 94 year old grandpa says did you see any? when i say yea but they were too small... he'll say in broken italian/english "that's the best meat!"..... while my mom says to "let them all go" Luckily my wife doesn't have anything to say.. at least not yet lol
  10. Good story hopefully the deer gets another year or two of growth
  11. myself along with a couple friends will push our properties the last week or weekend... we have some spots that are small and separate so we will do a small push and then re-group.. we will head into the thick swamps and thickets and cat tails which we normally stay out of all year long... the worst part of doing a deer drive?? having a buddy come up to you saying, "did you see that buck? he was huge why didn't you shoot?" haha
  12. Luepold, Vortex, or Nikon if you're on a budget.. I like Nikon BDC but some do not...
  13. i had interviews out of state but it didn't feel like home.. also, the trip back to NY to visit would've been tough... also, my sicilian grandparents helped raised me and they're still alive today.. my grandpa is 94 and my grandma is 88.. that was a dealbreaker right there, i wasn't going to leave family
  14. Hung 2 cams tonight around 430 after work and brought the xbow with just incase. Had 3 does at 60 yds, they ran off but 5 mins later came back lol... I suspect they're used to me by now which may lead to a fatal mistake this weekend...
  15. I have a 700 in 30-06 in wood-tech which is synthetic looking wood... Kinda cool looking and lightweight... Shoots great. Quite honestly if i had a $500 budget I would go for a Savage trophy hunter... My friend shoots it.. Has a nice trigger and bolt... If you can get that with a Nikon BDC for under 500 that's a real quality combo...
  16. we have a clover plot which does the best (whitetail institute) which is about 1/2 acre... this year we started over from scratch by spraying, tilling, spraying, tilling, mixing in a little lime (i think about 200-300 lb/acre) and then spreading and covering the seeds and fertilizing.. i would recommend the Arrest that whitetail institute makes after a few weeks of establishment.. it's pricey but man does our clover boom and competition weeds go away for quite a while... there's a bunch of videos online on how to property use the Arrest
  17. huge buck! this is the reason i go out in the big hardwoods opening weekend of gun season.. then go back to my 5 acre spot in suburbia the rest of the season... lol.. thanks for sharing, what a monster
  18. gonna have to read this later as i should be getting work done at work haha.. thx horn hunter...
  19. Yuck. Huge bucks tho. Just imagine the constant attention by scavengers. Also imagine trail cam pics of people in the area wondering WTF is that? Ha
  20. Saw your buck in the other thread. Congrats. Was that a shotgun kill? Or bow? Finally saw some deer including a nice 8 point down on border of henrietta/rush after going a week without seeing hardly anything...
  21. Suburban crossbow hunting... Hoping some shotgun guys walk the swamp across the street and move some more deer around. Had a 2.5 year old 8 pointer jog by at 75 yds 20 mins ago. 6 doe browsing the neighbors lawn now
  22. On a ridge looking down into a swamp. Hoping the neighbors do a drive today lol. Deer are either moving mid day or staying in thickets til dark here..
  23. Shut out today. Fresh tracks seemed to be mid day.. Had a couple sets of yote tracks too. Down the road was shooting well past 5pm lol.. Definitely 10x more shooting tonight than this morning in 8G..
  24. I would imagine if it freezes, right? I sprayed buck bomb this morning mostly to help cover my scent. Didn't see anything...
  25. that's great... i can tell how passionate you are about hunting in some of your responses here already.. bunch of us regulars on here are from western NY and Rochester.. i hunt private 5 acres in 8H and private 40 acres in 8G but live in Brighton.. good luck
