Oats and Wheat in Brassicas
LET EM GROW replied to phade's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
There comes a point in time where picture perfect food plots and food plots that just work come into play. Been there done that. Especially as life gets busier. No till and Min till help these years out tremendously. Lookin good sir. Hopefully we will be on the client list soon! lol -
A good idea for Rye plantings is to double plant it(layer it) Early september is probably a tad early for rye as it grows in colder temps. Plant half now and half in 2 weeks. youll have rye at two different maturity stages. Or wheat, then rye the next. Just different ways to keep plots drawing wildlife. Keep posting pics fellas!

DR walk behind trimmer(or others)
LET EM GROW replied to loworange88's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Trimmer is for grasses basically. The field mower would better suit you. IF your not off roading on your trails, you might be bette rot just get a good heavy duty used rider lawn mower. cut the front deck gaurd off and it will become a weed eating machine -
Looks good! I love watching food plots from the house! goes great with beer, or coffee or something lol. You get some growth for sure, depending on your average frost date you may still get some bulbs. Seed a big perennial blend into this in the winter for awesome spring plots.

How long after spraying....
LET EM GROW replied to mowin's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
IF your set on disking after spraying, just give it a day or two then disk. But you can spread seed, roll down standing vegetation with packer or roller then spray gly all the sameday with great results. Just don't go super heavy on application of spray. a fine mist is all that's needed. Seeds "soaked" in roundup will kill the seed/germination. The dose of gly/water mixture is enough to start germination and also kill the plant at the same time. So cover your seed with the existing vegetation(by rolling it over) then spray. Or if you have time, spray one weekend, seed and pack the next if your nervous. I seed, roll, spray all the same day with all my plantings.. beans, clovers, brassicas grains etc.. works great. Just need some soil moisture and rain following your planting date. -
New Vegetable Garden Advice
LET EM GROW replied to DIYhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Area should be Full sun. You can use a tractor or you can do it all with your bare hands. A rototiller would be best if you plan to use your tractor. Start your seeds in doors at the end of March into April. Zucchini, Squash, Tomatoes, peppers etc all will grow here. Your worst part is weed control. Especially if you dont have or want to spend all your time weeding. Dont use black plastic!! very unhealthy practice. Either plant your plants far enough apart and in straight rows both directions, where you can till between or mow the weeds down. OR you can plant a Cereal Rye or Winter Wheat in your Garden this fall at 50#/acre. When this gets almost mature (end of MAy, When your plants will go in the Dirt) you roll this wheat/rye down and kill it. this will be your new weed barrier. and plant your plants how youd like. This natural weed barrier works wonders! I have pics to prove it. Another good option is Doing Raised boxed in garden beds. Rotate your crops around every year to let them aid your soils. -
Lots of deer in the area. I drive through every day! Never hunted it though.
-
Lighter seed rate should create healthier plants. But i do understand what youre saying. Especially when its bare seed. Very few seeds per sq ft. But it typically all makes sense when September October rolls around.

Take way longer, harder to maintain and you really dont gain anything vs say Monoculture PTT planting. PTT, Radish, Rutabaga blend will win everytime. Look into a few annual Clovers, Like Balansa Fixation, Crimson and Frosty Berseem. Extreme Nitrogen builders and Very cold tolerant clovers. Good to 0degrees or less. Great planted side by side to brassica blends or to replace them on rotation years.

Add Rutabaga(Sweet Turnips) and you got a killer bulb blend. Add Winfred Brassica to it and you got a killer bulb and leaf blend for cold Weather plots. My Winfred brassica would grow 3'+ wehen planted early August and no fertilizers. and have heavy stalk. The deer would eat the stalk to within inches of the ground. Probably the best blend ive ever planted. Daikon, PTT, Rutabaga, and Winfred(no bulb all leaf) Brassica. Kale will also stay green longer into Winter as well. A mix of all this is a dynamite blend. IMO

So what did you spend on a deer mount this past season?
LET EM GROW replied to First-light's topic in Taxidermy
$550 for a shoulder mount $400 for a backpack -
A2 Tool Steel. Thought about making my own, being a Tool Maker by trade Was thinking of trying these or the Massaui heads. 150gr should put me at about 570gr arrow weight.

Here in Steuben Your brassicas and bulbs and cold tolerant Annual Clovers for winter should be going in now. If you arent planting brassicas or any other type of bulb.. you can weait til late August Early September and PLant grains, clovers, Peas etc. All depends what you want to plant. Big buffet blends are great, I truly love a bulb blend and Cold Tolerant Annual Clovers for winter.. Serious pulling power. But they need to go in now.

When you scratch the soil(plowing, tilling, disking etc..) You are releasing millions of weed weeds that lay dormant in the soil. They get moved by a disk, then hit with moisture and sun and you are now growing weeds with your seeds. No till, when done properly. Acts as a weed barrier, soil moisture saver, and it acts as slow release fertilizer. as it breaks' down. adding Organic matter as well. Which is better than any chemical fertilizer you'll add to it.. Also, we are planting tiny tiny seeds, there's no reason to bottom plow, or disk really. Tiny Brassica and clover seeds, just need to lay on soil someway somehow, a roller to gently press seed into soil slightly will help the rain pop that seed. but not always necessary. Just curious why theyd offer a free bag of seed. Unless they marked the first bag up a bunch.

Winter Wheat and Cereal Rye grow very easily. For best success, spread your seed then clip the clovers high. You will have great germination. I no till everything for 6 years now.
-
I highly recomend Grandpa Rays outdoors.. Either the Gold, Mass Builder or Overseed Blend for Perennial plots, use an oat or wheat for a nurse crop OR 3way for a killer annual, cold tolerant clover blend, That you can frost seed one of the perennials right into for a killer perennial Plot come SPring!!

ITs that simple! lol If you order the deal, let us know what test date is on the seed label. Im interested anyways .

I would say yes sir

My wifes family does this in local cow barns. The pigeons eat all the mineral feed and sh!t on it and the cows backs etc.. The farmers gladly welcome them to shoot right next to the cows and all. They take several dozen or more every sunday morning. Theyll stop at a farm or 2 then call it a day. But this looks like some fun for sure.
