They eat a lot of weeds! just depend son which ones lol. Your seed will grow yes, providing its good seed. Always check seed labels on the bag of what you buy. Round up wont hurt your seeds. Round up only kills on "green" contact. It shuts down the growing "process" within the plant. Without getting scientific lol. There are chemicals out there that have residual so you would have to allow down time before seeding. But Glyphosate/roundup is not one of them.
-
Your best bet is to weed whack them down. Then when they start growing back up. Hit them with Glyphosate (round up). you dont need a tiller for plots like these. Especially if you cant get equipment in there. kill vegetation first, then spread seed before the next rain. Very simple process. Providing your not trying to grow corn. If need be you can weed whack the dead veg again .. that will cover your seed and help germination when it gets wet from rain.

WNYBH That makes sense.. Would be curious to hear of the rules they have to abide by. Regardless of whom, they should do it on more vacant state owned fields. The tractor that was used wasparked there also, then once planted the planter sat there. Ill look today on my way through again. Land, that is a great idea leaving some crop standing for wildlife. Even better if the state supplied the seed i suppose.

Anybody else notice that the DEC crew in Naples, Planted a lot of the fallow fields in "Hi Tor" into Corn this year? I noticed they started mowing some of them last year, and the year before partially. I wasn't sure if it was a local farmer or the state at first, until the fields were planted and i saw the brand new looking planter sitting in their Naples Station on RTE 245. I always wondered why they hadn't let farmers plant these fields, off a lottery system of some sort. Along with a set of rules and regulations to follow. Sorry if i spoiled it for anyone lol, Just thought it was neat to see some positive things the state may be trying.. Depending how, if and or when it gets harvested, Could make some much better hunting.

I always try my best to thank every service man and woman. Past, present.. here and gone. They can never be thanked and or appreciated enough! My hat is off to all. These younger generations are quite nerve racking.. Really makes for a strange feeling, seeing what they do and dont do anymore... Its Sad really..

Happy birthday culvercreek hunt club !

Happy Birthday Bob! -
What G-man said! If you want to keep deer, especially a buck on your property. You better give them everything they need. then make it thick. Food for 365 days of the year, cover and water. Take as much of the land possible and turn it into a sanctuary(where you never ever intrude in on and unless absolutely have to) including your wind etc.. The saying "keeping pressure off", is key to holding deer especially with a couple years under their belt.

I did a 12ga 3" handload 2.25oz of 8s for my 535. i didnt buy any specialty choke for it. Tested it with the factory xxfull 670 and an undertaker 665 i had in another gun. It was an awesome hunting pattern and not super tight. If I remember right it was around 320 in 10" @ 40 and about a little higher outside the 10" wasnt too much of a difference between the chokes. With the 665 doing a tad better than the 670. If i load anymore for that it will probably be 7s or bigger for coyotes. Turkeys with a 20ga is fun! lol

Congrats man! I made the switch this year to a 20ga. Using my handloads of TSS 8s. I have a setup in 870 Rem and 500 Mossberg. The guns are much lighter no doubt, and a dream to carry for sure. But the powder charge in the handload 20ga, is not much less than that of the factory 12 ga turkey loads. Which luckily we dont normally feel the "kick" while in the woods. I was quite surprised in the difference between a factory 20ga turkey shell and the Handloads of TSS. Not that it deters me at all. My 20ga will outperform my 12ga with lead all day long. Next year Im hoping to tote a 28ga or 410!

Sure does. Just hope late summer brings a little more moisture than it did last year. For overseeding purposes the ground was to dry and the little bit of rain we got every so often wasn't enough to dampen the soil and germinate any seeds at my place, until it was too late.

Forgot to mention. My plots will all be double cropped and or triple cropped. To keep something growing as many days out of the year as possible. Brassica and bulb blends overseeded into soybeans for Winter. Some Annual clovers with grains in plots. Some Late Summer planted soybeans in a mix. Got a lot of ideas.
-
Friday I seeded a blend called Deer and bird over an acre area i sprayed 3 weeks earlier. This blend has soybeans, sunflowers, Sorghum, WGF Surghum, and Buckwheat i believe. Mixed in with a screening/bedding cover. They may eat the deer bird blend this summer. but if not, it should be a magnet come winter for both "deer and birds" depending on how it goes. I didnt get a chance to disk or roll it due to rain. But we had very heavy rains and some near all day soakers since. So i'd imagine it will do ok. Its my first dedicated "summer" food besides clover. white Clover they dont normally eat in summer months until fall nears. I planted soybeans also but will be fencing one off for a while. and the other until the rut/late season. They are rock bottom awesome for early bow season. I dont normally do summer food plots because there is so much for them to choose from with native growth and a couple ag fields down the road. Plus i dont have the acerage to do them. Id have to terminate in july/august to get my fall winter plots in. I did mix in some a couple pounds sweet corn with my beans in spots to see how it does. If its edible ill eat it, if not the critters can have it.

So I did a little trial between 2 soybean plots last week. I did 1 plot with a regular light disking to promote better seed to soil contact, and the other in my "no till" planting methods where i terminated the winter wheat and rolled it over my bean seeds. Immediately after doing both we had 2 different monsoons come in and basically wiped out my seasonal road and a couple driveways down below us. I am excited but not excited at the same time, to see the difference between the two plots. With the more bare/lightly scratched soil probably losing a bunch of seed from possible run off. Im hoping my no till field had plenty enough coverage and protection that very little seed ran off with the rain water. Both plots are on a slight down hill taper. The road is so bad I cant get my car down to the house so Ill have to walk in or wait until its re graded. Hopefully dont have to replant. -

I sprayed off my Fall planted Triticale and Winter Wheat plots. Broadcast soybeans at about 200,000 seeds/acre then rolled the Green but should be dying grains over the soybean seeds. with todays coming rain as well as sunday/monday(hopefully) they should take off. If i can make it before the rain, i plan on getting my "Deer and Bird" blend into the dead thatch i sprayed a couple weeks ago. With coming rains help, they should take off. That will be a summer/winter food source as well as a screen to a clover plot. with a Sorghum/Egyptian wheat blend around the perimeter to help aid the screen. Need to get my clover/grain plots mowed. Clovers are a foot tall, super thick and beginning to flower some. Looks very good for a spring 2017 planted plot -

Cheap Soybeans from QDMA
LET EM GROW replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I need to re new my membership, But Id be in it for a bag or 2 for that price. I just purchased my soybeans last week. Bob, Can I renew my membership and still be able to purchase a bag or two for that price? -
Ive seen guys use this style before. they run it over the soil a time or two. Then spread seed. Flip the tire over to the smooth side and drag it. That way it drags in the seed that isnt in the rows/trenches from the bolts already. and lightly covers it. Then you end up with what almost looks like row crops. Seen many before and afters, works well.

Thanks for the advice, and I will look into that. Would love to incorporate more for the birds.. Especially if the neighbors aren't lol. Just wish i had more land available to plant on. Id plant it all and experiment with it yearly..

Experiences grafting fruit trees?
LET EM GROW replied to stubborn1VT's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I picked up 5 grafted pears from Ryan, (Blue Hill member here) He grafts all his trees. And these pears are 2 year old trees and they are gowing like crazy this year already. Says his will fruit by year 4. Showed me quick how to do the graft. without physically doing one lol. Id like to graft some crab apple and a peach tree i found that produced fruit for the very first time last year.. and it produced hundreds if not thousands of fruit for its first year.. and is probably only 10-15' tall -
It is that time of year again.

My first buck, which was also my first deer. After I had just missed a 130" 8pt @ 12 steps.. I smoke this one in the same exact spot lol.

Apple Tree Trouble
LET EM GROW replied to Rebel Darling's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Apples usually just need a good heavy trim at the right time of year. I released all of mine that were not looking to well recently. Full sun and no competition now. Might lose some apples this year since i was a little late, but that is fine i have enough to go around. -
Coyotes at our place get hunted hard. We keep them in check for the most part. but some not so good hunters make them harder to hunt in winter. But they are smart shits. I want to get in to trapping coon this year. and hopefully trapping coyotes. Had a giant coyote just sit down and watch me walk across an open field the other day. Guess hes lucky the shotgun was over my shoulder lol. Big brave basterd. Just got back into hunting them last winter. Between a few of us there, we took 9 coyotes. and many more reds and greys. But Along with the cats, we are seeing more fishers around too.. Both protected here

When is the best time you plant this? Would it be useful in a fall planting? Sorry about the questions. lol. My clover plot that got annihilated by the log skidder last year is not doing so well. Going to mow it soon, and if it doesnt come back im starting it over shortly after or late summer.
