  1. We should probably set up a meet and greet and go from there. Shoot me a PM.
  2. Kinda late now. I'm currently mentoring my grandson, but may be able to take you out a time or two. Where are you located? I assume you have all tags and equipment? Can shoot your bow proficiently? If you are a minor, a parent or someone must accompany you. If all this fits, shoot me a PM.
  3. I'm in for Capital District. We have a tracking dog and are associated with Deer Search. Have recovered more than my share over the years for many hunters. With and without a dog. I'm not much help with long drags anymore after some surgeries. But have a 6'2" 195 lb. grandson chomping at the bit! And my legs are strong enough to make up for weak shoulders!. .........grin.
  4. It's the wise hunter, who never stops thinking and learning. For no one ever learns and knows it all.
  5. I've hunted hills and ridges my whole life. And to kill deer year after year in these areas, you need to be able to read thermals. I call it seeing the air. Just remember warm air rises and cool air sinks and you are halfway there! But terrain features can effect thermals too, like outcroppings, gullies, or even a line of conifer trees will effect the ebb and flow of thermals, and where your scent drifts. And the prevailing wind can enhance or negate a thermal. I have a couple spots where a strong NW wind will blow down, over the top of the ridge. But where I am on a bench mid way down, the wind is blowing UP hill. Knowing the areas and how wind and thermals effect them is so important on choosing where and when to set up.
  6. Shoulder surgery in May to be able to hunt the bow opener. Looks like I will make it! Lots of watching my 13 y.o. grandson shoot his bow over the summer. Hoping to get his first deer this year. After football and travel baseball seasons are over. New hunting rifle for the firearms season. Planning to make some memories with it, before handing it down, when my hunting days are done. New blinds built, old ones redone. Look forward to the quiet time in the woods. And some snow!
  7. I see more of them every year. And a couple of BIG ones too. So far, have let them all pass. But "maybe" some day?
  8. Before the first hunt of the year, I get in touch with my Native American side. I will step in the woods, fill my lungs with the scent of the earth. Look up, spread my arms wide and ask the hunting and woods spirits, if they find me worthy and free of selfish thoughts, that they see fit to send me a deer. Then say a few of the "old words" taught to me by my grandmother and her brother when I was very young. Then, I will make the sign of the cross and ask Him to watch over me. This I have done for all of my hunting seasons. Just the way I'm wired I guess.
  9. Awesome! Way to go! That first one is the hardest to get , but also the most memorable by far! Congratulations! You are now a successful bowhunter!
  10. Thank you! For all the hard work put in, to keep this site up and running! You guy's are amazing!
  11. Best of luck guys. Keep safe out there! I'm still tossing around what property to be on when the sun rises??? No matter where I decide to plop down, it looks to be a beautiful opening morning!
  12. Stopped at the local Agway over the weekend. It was doing a brisk business with guys in camo hats loading bags of corn in to their trucks. It's at least an hour and a half drive, from that location to anywhere baiting would be legal. But this has been going on for a long time. Even had guys tell me I'm nuts not to do it, "everyone else is". I usually just smile and say "I'm not everyone else", and "besides, if I made it any easier, it'd take all the darn fun out of hunting". Then they'll say, "to each their own". And I look em in the eye and say, "yup, to each their own"............
  13. Great post! I get "hit" a lot! Until the first week of November or so. That is usually when I start to "hit" back!
  14. 52lbs. scaled. After shoulder surgery in May. I've come a long way baby! Shooting a 17 year old MQ-32.
  15. RIP. Who didn't want to be Hugh as a teenager? No doubt, he's shot more bunnies than I have.
  16. I thought about this post this morning. And although I have VERY good Doc's. The reason I'm able to hunt this year, is through the grace of God. I truly believe that. Not preachin, just sayin, is all.
  17. Luna and yourself are picking up right where you left off last season! As an awesome tracking team! I too look forward to following this great thread! Wishing you two a very successful and safe season! Go Luna and Tom!!!
  18. With the help of Google, YouTube, and advice from members here, I'm doing more myself these days.
  19. I get an annual physical every year. But see multiple Doc's for various reasons throughout the year. If not for all those Doc's, I would not be hunting. Or, anything else..................smile.
  20. I thought it was illegal to hunt in Croc's?...............grin.
  21. Isn't Tikka made in the same factory as Sako?
  22. With skinned shins from falling off the bucket.............................
  23. My hunting partner bought his daughter a Savage Axis in compact model with the pink trim in 243 last year. She loves it and shoots much more accurate than with her old 20g. The 7mm-08 should be light on the recoil too. Great choice Dad! Get back to us, and let us know how she does with the new set up.
