Nomad
What used to work on older safes, was punching. You take off the dial ,and the spindle that it's attache to can be driven back with a punch and hammer. thus knocking off all the tumblers. The tumblers are simple disks with a slot in them, when all tumblers are aligned and you turned the handle ,the bolt could retract into the tumbler slots and the safe would open. Then they started to mount the tumblers on a bushing with only the drive wheel attached to the spindle,so punching no longer moves the tumblers only the drive wheel. So next you had to drill an inch or so over to punch put all the tumblers and drive wheel, but then they started putting more hardend metal there to prevent that method as well. Myself I would give it a go,but recommend most call a locksmith. And don't ask...... Edited October 29, 2014 by Larry302

BizCT
Hopefully some precious metals or cash are in there. No lie, I had a great aunt and uncle who lived in upstate NY. They had no other family. They would always tell my Mom to check certain places in the house for $ they hid (my great uncle suits pockets, old coffee cans, and even a hole in the wall in the basement that was patched up). For some reason they didn't want to put $ in the banks over the years. Anyway, when they died and we went through the house it ended up being over 1/2mill cash in that house. But also made us wonder if there was any that we missed somewhere?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

First-light
Now let me ask you this, why would a single female school teacher in 1942 have a house built with two safes in it?
BizCT
Now we know where you and your Dad got all the money to go on those expensive hunts each year! lol. I barely got any of it. $30K out of a couple million. Most of it went to friends of them who took care of them, etc.
Paula
Now let me ask you this, why would a single female school teacher in 1942 have a house built with two safes in it?Because she was left something from someone else?I have found that a lot if teachers are frugal. Maybe she didn't want to use bank?
BizCT
I can't believe you live in a house with a locked safe not knowing the contents inside. I would have had that safe opened the day I closed on the house.
Culvercreek hunt club
I am with Biz. I would have had that thing open before the ink dried on the documents.
BizCT
I am with Biz. I would have had that thing open before the ink dried on the documents. Part of me thinks I would have wanted it open before buying the house. But then again, I wouldn't want to lose what might be in there. But if it turns out to be body parts, I'm not sure I would want to continue to live in that house lol.

Great thought thank you! lol I'm moving in Sunday full time. Just haven't had the time to do it. All the proceeds of the house went to charity so other than the estate sale that happened in April there has been no one else in the house for 27 years except a caretaker. I have his number and reached out to him but no reply.
