I couldn't find a shed if my life depended on it....

So the last couple of years I have stepped up my shed hunting. My hunting property is 45 min from my house so I have taken to the nature preserve about 5 min away. Every day my daughter and I along with my Golden (Milo) have been walking all over this nature preserve. Now people walk the trails but I have never seen anyone walk off the trail while i am there. My daughter and i have found numerous trails, beds, poop, rubs etc. I feel like i have nailed down pretty well where the deer are traveling (away from the people) and we have walked and grid searched pretty large area's of the preserve off the trails where it is my belief that nobody goes. There are never any footprints when there is snow off the trails. I can't imagine what i am doing wrong. Now my daughter is 11 so she probably isn't looking as hard as i am when we are searching and i am enjoying every minute in the woods with her pointing out sign etc but man. I am on a mission now to find a shed....for now i am hoping it is just a bit to early.....

I consider myself a very avid shed Hunter. I usually find on average about 15 year. The single biggest thing I can say is to look where there are a good concentration of bucks. If there arent any bucks in the woods then youre wasting your time. Winter is different than fall. A buck that May be in there in October or during the rut usually might not be in that specific area during the winter. My rule of thumb is usually look in the thickest nastiest stuff or on South facing ridges

I'm going to go on my first shed hunt today.  I've never actively looked for sheds before, and I am going to go to a spot near my work at lunch break...I hunted this spot during this past season, and there was a VERY active scrape line that followed a wood line, and goes thru an apple orchard and out to a corn field.  We'll see if I find anything.

I still have a bunch of trail cams out on four different properties and am getting a lot of photos with bucks carrying at least one antler. I would guess from my photos of shed bucks who are often with other bucks that at least half or better are still carrying. I never have much luck finding sheds until March.

When the air is fresh and the winds in your favor, can almost sniff them. I almost can tell the day, when I'll find one. A positive attitude is the upmost importance.

Here, most of the bucks are still wearing them. I think it will be a later drop because of the mild winter.

Yup most bucks are still holding atleast one side. A lot still have both. Atleast its the case whete i am in westchester.

That nature preserve is probably well searched before you get to it , I know guys that do just that and start before the park even opens coming in from a creek or adjoining property, you best bet is to scout food sources after deer season and see what is using it.. I have 7 doe in my yard every day , none will ever leave a horn, but the standing corn across the street has yielded a spike so far and cam say bucks still have their horns.. just because you saw them in the fall someplace does not mean they winter there... that's the key where do they winter and feed

I've never gone shed hunting but intend to. It's nice you take your daughter along I'm hearing of quite a few bucks still with headgear on. I have some good spots to check out and have no idea what I'm doing. Hope to report back soon with good results.

 

I was wondering about this.  I spooked a trio today while I as out stomping the brush for rabbits.  They must have been laying down on the back side of a fallen tree basking in the sun.  I kicked one fallen tree that was resting on another and they took off like missiles.  The big male up front had a full rack.

 

I thought they normally fell off by now.

Also saw a tiny fox (no bigger than my wife's cat) and a pair of beautiful snow owls.

Yea nature preserves would be my last choice. I know tift farms is extremely competitive for shed hunting. Just an example I've seen Craigslist ads asking people if they have found a matched drop to theirs and what they would be willing to pay or trade for that side. Even amherst\Williamsville where known big boys are- there is just too much competition for me. I like to enjoy my time and not run into anyone. The best part of shed hunting for me is the scouting and knowledge aquired on my hikes.

Ive heard that at stiglemeier the sheds don't even hit the ground! Same with the rail yard in Cheektowaga

I saw a guy walking into the woods off Pavement in Lancaster today, he had a basket on his back, looked like a shed Hunter. So which one of you guys was it and did you fill the basket??

 

Was he dressed in tan coveralls? 

 

Anybody here know who I'm talking about?
