growalot
Do you still have boats in the water? I see small craft advisory and Gail advisories popping up on weather ground. More now then during " boating season". Just curious..thought most or all would be in storage now.
moog5050
Our marina is cleared out by mid Nov usually with most boats out of water in Oct.
growalot
Thanks Moog...That's what I thought...I do not recall seeing such advisories so late before...they must be having a slow " severe weather " week,or withdraw.

I've also been wondering about " small craft advisories " crawl across the Weather channel AP. I like it even better when I'm hunting at my brothers. There isn't so much as a pond for a long long ways off.
grampy
My boat has been winterized, cleaned and covered since the end of September. Although a good number of people fish through October, I'm ready to bow hunt by October first.
Bigfoot 327
Perch and trout fishers are on the larger Finger Lakes all winter as the weather allows. I saw a person fishing last week when I was in Watkins Glen. The fishing can actually be quite good this time of year. PIA to winterize boat after each trip, but often worth the effort.

Lawrence. there are also a number of boats working the larger rivers fishing trout/salmon some working close to the entrance of rivers to the lake. Also a USCG small craft advisory is any vessel under 65 feet in length.
Lawdwaz
Like others have mentioned, I've wondered why Wunderground and the weather channel internet sites are running that warning.......WTH??
reeltime
most of the boats you will see out once the weather temps dip to freezing or below are outboards. The main reason is its generally difficult to winterize inboard motors on a daily basis. with an outboard you pull up on the ramp after retrieving your boat trim the motor down and let it drain out.... all done winterizing and ready to go the next day. our late split season for ducks doesn't start this year till 12/31 and runs till the 15th of jan. there will be a lot of boats on the water at that time. basically any open water in the migratory bird western zone from lake ontario to the pa boarder it there is open water and ducks on it someone will be hunting it.

philoshop
I remember a few times in the mid-1970's when we'd snow-ski at Brantling Hill in the morning and water-ski on Sodus Bay in the afternoon with wetsuits. Ahh, to be young and tough again. As mentioned above there are also a lot of working boats out there that pay attention to the small craft advisories year 'round. People contracted to maintain docks, piers, jetties, seawalls, and boathouses quite often need to go out to fix a small problem before it becomes a major problem. Not to mention the Coast Guard 'small-boat' rescue folks who have to go out to save lives like to know what they're getting into. Rescuing ice-fishermen from a floating sheet of ice has to be enough of a challenge, but doing it without knowing what the lake conditions are beforehand would be madness.
hunter49
Quote Many people fish the lower Niagara river all year. They also fish the Niagara bar all year at the rivers mouth to lake Ontario.(me & friends being some of them) The boat launch in Lewiston NY is open all year also. I know many guys that would fish lake Erie until ice formed but there are no launches open on Erie the A-holes close everything up a week after labor day or by Oct.15 every year.! People also fish the larger finger lakes all year that don't freeze over.

Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk I get "small craft "warnings when checking The Weather Channel where I hunt in Bliss/Eagle. There's no major body of water remotely close. That dang Wiscoy creek at 10-16" deep and 12 foot wide hasn't been condusive to boating ever
The_Real_TCIII
Mines ready to go into Ontario come late duck season. Any wind W or SW is typically ok. Erie is a nightmare with almost all wind directions Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Al Bundy
I lived on my boat 1 1/2 winters in NY. First winter thought I was going to die of pneumonia. I got a horrible cold/flu that finally went away only to come back a week later. That was not fun times. Second winter closed on my house by xmas that year and moved off ASAP.. I still have several friends in the marina that live aboard. Was it 3 years ago one day in January was about 70 degrees. a gang of us headed out on a buddys boat for the day. Great day on the water.!!

The_Real_TCIII
That reminds me of the episode where Gilligan drops his hat on the quicksand, and the skipper comes along and thinks he sunk into it. Then Gilligan shows up at his own funeral. Oh wait, that was every single episode never mind
Buckmaster7600
Mine is ready to go at a moments notice, last year we were trolling lake Champlain all winter and the salmon fishing was some of the best ever.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

wheelieman
I have a 14ft starcraft with a 10 horse on it, Motor comes in the basement when its cold, But if cayuga doesnt get enough ice ill bring my boat out of Union Springs for perch, Some years you can walk out and ice fish but the last few years that hasnt really been the case, That lake sneeks up on you to, Looks good headed out by the time you get to the island it could have 5ft breakers in winter it can be even worse, But if you can get out there and stay for awhile its some of the best fishing around,

I bought that same ham yesterday and we've had it for dinner two nights now. Also I bought a turkey breast for $9 there......should have grabbed a few. And yes, the ham was good. So were the mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. I rarely shop for that stuff but damn, it was almost $90 before I knew it. Bastids.... That stretch of Canadice Lake Rd you speak of IS very narrow, I've wondered about the danger many times.
