Jeremy K
What's with these people not identifying their targets ?
nybuckboy
Absolutely should never have a gun again in his life. Unbelievable!
Five Seasons
maybe if the guys were doing the new turkey fan fad where you crawl and sneak... but even then you should notice there's no head. Which means no shot. This shit drives me crazy.
grampy
There is absolutely no valid excuse for shooting another hunter, under any circumstance!!! Not if you are following all the firearm safety rules! Disregard the basic rules and throw out common sense, and this is what you get!
Borngeechee
Yea I really don't get how that done. If you can't tell a turkey tail from an actual live turkey, you shouldn't be hunting. I was always taught to fully identify what your shooting at as well as what's behind it.Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk
ny hunter
No reason for this none......
WNYBuckHunter
I really dont understand these turkey hunting shootings. Its a short yardage game, and the target is relatively small. How is it possible to not clearly identify your target before pulling the trigger? I havent been turkey hunting very seriously for very many years, but theres no mistaking a live turkey, how it acts and moves, for a hunter, even one holding a decoy and crawling along the ground. This guy should be up on reckless endangerment charges and never allowed to own or touch a gun again. Just plain stupidity.
NFA-ADK
Shame, hope they are ok. Like stated above no reason for this, he did not identify his prey and shot at movement. Simply put that is just an irresponsible hunter who did not follow the safety code, did not identify his prey and simply shot at what he thought was a turkey without identification and shot placement. I can understand occasional accidents in wing shooting birds in the field. But even then there are practices to prevent you from swinging your barrel and peppering your buddy with bb's. It is the one time where I can at least understand how it might happen though. Everything else boggles my mind.
Doc
He shot two different guys in the face with one shot? It really doesn't make any sense. The damned foliage isn't even out yet. The woods is wide open such that you can see forever. One guy could never be obstructed such that you couldn't clearly identify him, let alone TWO. Really, this sounds like something intentional. The investigators should look long and hard at this one.

Still no excuse.

Doc
Yeah, I have no idea what Kansas looks like this time of the year. But two guys sitting close enough together to both be shot in the face is really hard to believe. My gosh, didn't they see him pull up getting ready to shoot. It's all so hard to even imagine. There had to have been a clear line of sight between them. Weird!!!!
jperch
Of course there are no excuses, we are all responsible every single time we pull the trigger. I don't know the exact statistics but for those of us who are avid turkey hunters it is worth knowing and constantly thinking about the inherit dangers. Yes, it is a close up game. It often takes place on ground level in thick areas, hunters don't usually pursue turkeys from elevated blinds. Hunters make turkey noises and the reality is that other hunters sometimes try to approach turkeys who are being vocal. We conceal ourselves to make it hard for us to be seen by our quarry. Some use decoys. I think about all this every day I hunt and remind the GF regularly. What do you think would happen to deer hunting accident statistics if deer hunters all wore camo and walked through thick brush grunting like a buck? All I am saying is please think about this and do everything you can to protect yourself, especially on public land. jperch
G-Man
Always seems they think they see a head.. I thought you need to look for beard.. But you can hunt them 1/2hour before sunrise.. But its impossible to identify a deer 30 min before sunrise. So no shooting till sunrise..maybe they need to do that for turkey and ducks as well

At 40 yards a big fan can hide the average easily. I'm not justifying the shooting but being that it looks real and being able to shoot 1/2 hour before and after sunrise might have played a role. At 40 yards and 1/2 hour before sunrise I have saw blobs in a field that ended up being chunks of plowed furrow.
Five Seasons
yeah that's why even on private property I'm not a fan of this hunting style. I don't mind using a gobble but the fan and gobbler imitation is risky one. Turkey hunters are probably the most notorious trespassers and it would get more attention if they had the same coveted headgear that deer do, but fact is a lot more land is open to turkey hunters than deer hunters.
Nomad
All three hunters were hiding behind persevered turkey fans . So the two, shot certinly had to,be laying close to each other if they shared one fan , then its easy to see how both took pellets to the head . I goggle it for you .... http://www.kansas.com/sports/outdoors/article145929249.html Edited April 25, 2017 by Larry302

NFA-ADK
More proof that fanning is one of the most dangerous decoys to use, you might as well wear a deer suit with giant antlers in the Southern zone for opening day. Simply put any decoy that is in front of your face can cause you to get shot, putting one that looks like a turkey in front of you is simply idiotic and should be banned. It's like hiding behind the deer decoy so you can move closer to the deer, might work but your chances of getting shot are very high! Lawmakers should simply outlaw fanning, way to much danger involved! Please don't use this even if you think your private land has no turkey hunters, we all know about trespassing and how another hunter can all of a sudden hunt your land thinking he is the only one on it. Be safe!
