Beaver

So last night I was at camp and saw a young beaver in the pool in the creek behind my house. I also noticed what looks like he may be turning a logjam into a lodge. I know I can’t just shoot him but I really don’t want him to flood my backyard. How would you handle this. Is this a real concern? He let me get pretty close for a while before he slapped the water with his tail and went under. Cool to watch but really don’t want to deal with the mess

Call the DEC. You can get a nuisance permit which will allow you to remove a dam or lodge.  I am sure he is building a dam first. Usually they are living in a bank den at this point. The permit will also allow you to "do about anything you want short of explosives to get the little bugger. Easiest is rip a hole int he dam and sit with a spot light. Shotgun with number 4's does a nice job.

Btw beaver is great eating ( let the jokes fly here ). Had some backstraps cubed , dry rubbed , dab of jalapeño cream cheese , slice of water chestnut, 1/3 piece of bacon and cooked in skillet that Dinorocks made on New Years few years back.

I've had it before. Very good.

Under a nuisance permit I believe burying or burning is what they want done.  We never recovered any we shot on the permits becasue the water was deep and they sink like a rock when you shoot them.

agreed. i've eaten beaver before and it was great. i'd call ECO or DEC. they can have someone come out and remove it or give you the legal means allowing you to do so. our ECO around here has relocated them before. takes help from animal control and a few chewed nests but yea.

Sorry to disappoint  you perverts, but I'm going to play it straight this time...

A trapper friend of mine used to save me a skinned and cleaned beaver each season, since I was always cooking up fish and game and taking it in tp work..

I would trim all of the fat off the carcass,  place it on a rack in a blue porcelain roaster,  dump an envelope of Lipton's Onion Soup over it and roast it, covered, until it was fork tender..

The guys in the shop loved it...Kind of reminded me of well done roast beef...

Ha I have a funny story about that......About 35-40 years ago I was maybe 14. My Grandpops and an old buddy, the German, came up with a great plan to remove the flucking beaver that was flooding the crick behind the Germans' home. Of course this plan was made at the bar late into the evening and them being into the drink I was commissioned to be the DD and explosives handler.

To this day I thought Grams was gonna kill him when she heard about it. I have all my fingers, and we never did find most of that beaver.

lol Good times!!
