anybody got a crossbow yet

Just curious. Has anyone purchased a crossbow? Are you shooting it and how do you like it? I personally do not plan to get one until they are legal in archery season. I was just looking for some range reports etc.

I have not bought one.If we get an extra tag and maybe more time in the season I well think about getting one.

It'll be interesting to see how many people will use the xbow during gun season. Probably only the Horton sponsored outdoor writers, then who knows, maybe even THEY won't want to use them when they could be carrying a gun.

I was a Philipsons yesterday and over heard two guys talking about how they cant wait for bow season and how much fun its going to be using the crossbow. They sounded like they already had them and were planning on using them this year.

I was in a hurry otherwise i would have struck up a conversation with them.

I wonder how much of this we will see - (use of x-bow during the bow season).

I have blown a couple guys in for using muzzle loader during bow season. Apparently if the tag can be used during either season then you can use the weapon of choice during either season as well.

Probably not, seeing as there isnt one. All you have to do is print off and sign the Croosbow cert found here...

I may purchase one... just to maybe use on a whim during the gun season...not really sure yet, but it might be a good challenge... I just don't see myself using it all that much without a season of it's own.

i've shot several at my friends in ohio.. they are loud!!, probably won't get one unless they give it a seperate season. yes i am sure there are guys using them during bow and have been for the last several years. was even eves dropping how the owner of a hunting/fishing store has been using then for the last 5 years as he "has a special permit that let him use one" Face it there are rule breakers everwhere some knowling and uthers are just ignorant... Anyone still hunt with an old winchester model 12.. they hold 7 rounds hope you have a plug in it to make it 6...lol

IMHO, the less they get used, the bigger chance they will be added to archery season. They will ned to do something to get the interest up and sell more archery priveleges. Money makes the govt go round

I own 2 excalibur crossbows Vortex and phoenix. which I have had for a couple of years. I am very happy with my xcal's and I will be using the Vortex during rifle season in 6K. I will use my rifle to fill my buck tag then I will hunt with the x-bow in order to fill my doe permit.

Only landowner doe permits for 6k. Do you own enough land there to get one? I live in 6k on over 100 acres I get a doe permit every year.

I have no desire for a xbow. If it the gun season im going to use my rifle, if I wanted to use a bow I would use my compound.... If it or when it become a legal implement in archery I will use my bow. Why would I go out and spend another grand on equipment to hunt in a season I have equipment that is more than capable of harvesting deer year after year? I dont have any ill thoughts towards the guy that wants one its just makes no sense to me to buy one. I have a hard enough time trying to decide what stand to sit in when I get up let alone having to add what weapon Im going to use in what stand. LOL

I think the DEC better think this one through... not seeing a lot of interest from guys during the regular season... but I guess everything new starts out a bit slow... just seems like not many are going to give up hunting with their rifles and shotguns for a crossbow... I guess we'll have to see.

If you have a preference point then you may get one as a non landowner. I had 1 pt and received my doe permit for 6K already

Very cool. I didnt notice the pp req on this years list. Guy at the store said none except for landowners and I never checked till now. Only hunt 2 wmu's so either I get them or dont. Good luck hunting this year.

There's nothing illegal about hunting with a 7 shot pump gun in NY unless you are hunting migratory game birds such as ducks, geese, woodcock, etc.

A semiauto is limited to 6 shots unless it is a .17 or .22 rimfire, but there is no general regulation limiting magazine capacity of pumps, levers, or bolt actions.

Watched a show yesterday and a woman on there shot a couple of sheep of some sort at 64 yrds, and 50 something yrds. I can't wait till there legal for bow. All them big bucks just out of range are going down.

People out west routinely shoot deer and other animals at 50, 60 yards and sometimes further with their vertical bows. If you have the right circumstances, good equipment and are comfortable shooting that far, theres nothing wrong with it. Crossbows have the same effective range as a vertical bow. If you think a crossbow is going to work like magic in the woods, and all those deer will be easy to shoot, you are talking out of your ass or just fooling yourself.

BTW, Ive been shooting my new bow out to 60 yards and not doing too bad with it, even with a decent cross wind. The toughest part of it is seeing the center of the target behind my pins.

I bought an Excalibur Vortex back in the spring. 200lb, so its legal in NY and PA (no limit). The Excaliburs have no cams, which is great. They are essentially Recurve Crossbows. I am sighted in dead on at 25 yards and feel confident with my ballistics from 0 - 40 yards. I will use my Crossbow in PA during Archery Season, then use it during the late ML season here in NY for a chance at a 2nd buck in addition to my buck tag for shotgun season here. My crossbow is so accurate I cannot practice 40 yards or closer and aim at the same bulls eye or I will be breaking my bolts. Im shooting Excalibur Easton Carbon Bolts and 150gr. Excalibur Boltcutter broadheads. I have the Lumizone scope which can be turned on to have the crosshairs in red glow instead of black for minimal light conditions.
