Disposing of animal remains is illegal as well... they must be buried... actually most guys don't do it, but when you gut a deer you are suppose to bury the entrails.

Joe, I have been hunting a long time and never heard of burying the entrails. I have never done this, just left it for the critters. Never too old to learn.

Well, the discussion has already taken more time than it's worth. It's not a question of anybody being out of line, but just an observation that declaring skepticism of somebody's account of something may not be the most friendly way to encourage that member to ever post again.

I did an article on it years ago... and to my knowledge the law has not changed... whether or not it is still enforced I can't say... and I do not bury mine either... just telling what I know to have been the law.

Just a follow up... I have looked and looked for the law and I am unable to find it... maybe it no longer exists... therefore I stand corrected until I can verify that it is still the law... sorry

The only reason I see for burying might be the threat of C.W.D.. Quite surprised know one mentioned it.

I wonder if there may have been a requirement for burying entrails in the CWD area that was established after the initial outbreaks? I seem to recall that they had a lot of unique regulations for that area.

It'd be a heck of a waste of good vittels for lots of critters if we buried them. The worms get plenty of help without burying those goodies.

All kinds of critters feast on the gut pile, including DEER!

I dont think I could get a shovel in the ground where I hunt. It seems to be all rock.

I despise poaching. It takes away from the true sportsman. I also hate it when people throw carcasses into our creek and stuff. drives me insane.

That is definitely illegal... you can't even through fish entrails in the water... your mother in-law, but not entrails..lol

what about natural causes? cant bury every remains in the woods...

For whatever reason, I thought there was some sort of law used to protect water supply saying that you can't just bury a dead animal anywhere. I know several farmers who have "grave yards" set up in specific area's and usually only cover their dead animals with hay or sawdust. They never actually bury them.

Certain watershed areas, usually around public water supplies, have special regulations for any type of digging, dumping, etc. Farmers usualy have areas like that to keep the dead animals and predators/scavengers away from the rest of the livestock.

...doesn't seem to me that burrying potential evidence would be a good idea for a CO to have to deal with.

I'd imagine if any of us saw someone burrying deer carcasses it might raise some suspision.

You could call the DEC, I talked to a guy who called the DEC and they set up cameras on his property.
