Finally got my first vehicle. 1998 jeep cherokee sport, 4 door, 170,000 miles, straight 6 engine, 4X4, sun roof, new tires. just needs rear cylinders which im doing at boces in my auto tech class, gotta redo one brake line because its getting rusty and would rather replace it now than wait and have it go later on. small leak in the oil line, easy fix. So pumped! 1200$, all myself, feels good to do something on your own and know you put in all your hard work for it.

Cool. Sounds like you got a good deal. Check your floor boards when you have it up on the rack and look for soft spots. Also those rear brakes can become a real pain, you may want to look into disc brake conversions for them. The early Jeep ABS drums are known to have issues.

You have every right to be proud. That's quite an accomplishment at 16 years old. You should feel great about it.

Now for the advice. An older Jeep like yours will need maintenance. It will cost money when it does. Keep earning, and saving, money for the future. When you have a comfortable bank accout to fall back on, it's easier to take the stress when your car decides it needs to be fixed. Having a car opens up a whole new world of employment possibilities too. You can now get to and from a job much farther away and without assistance from anyone else. That may help you earn more.

I remember when I was your age, being surprised how much it cost to own a car and take care of it. It seemed to take more of my money than anything else I owned, and gas was only .40 cents a gallon back then. That was in 1973. Still, I wouldn't have been able to live happily without it, so I worked for what I needed. That was my first lesson in individual responsibility. It turned out to be a very good learning experience.

A car, especially a used one, is good practice for raising kids, because you never know when it will want, and need, money from you.

Best of luck with it. Drive it in good health for many years to come.

Have fun and CONTINUE to save your money, you'll need it.

My first ride was a '72 Chevy C10. It only took me 6 months or so to wrap it around a tree.............dumb ass.

My first was a Nissan Sentra. Thing has had two colors. The car was red but the hood was black. Oddly, it got stolen. A couple of years later it was replaced with a Honda Prelude Si. It was pre-engine cap so it was awesome. Never pushed it to the max but I got it up to 145 mph once going on I-80 through Pennsylvania at like 3 in the morning. Wrecked it a few times. Old horse develop rust and was held up in some parts by duct tape. My old man took it out back and shot it to put it out of it's misery.

Congrats on the jeep. My 1st car was a 96 toyota corolla. Loved that car, I beat the crap out of it driving all over Lousiana hunting and fishing when I was in the army. And I see by all the back seat comments on here my daughter will be getting a smart car.

Hey Doc..What was your first vehicle..???

My first vehicle was a 1954 ford. That one was a fixer-upper and never made it to the road. Next came a 1952 Ford .... a Texas car that was full of dry-rot on every rubber part, but had no rust. That one lasted a while. Then came an old 1959 Cadillac. Nice comfy car but started going downhill fast with expensive repairs. I remember going down the expressway while the air inside was turning blue from the exhaust leaking from the just ahead of the muffler.

Finally in 1965, I bought my first brand new car ..... a Plymouth Valiant. That ran forever. Most of my car choices were economy cars with a couple of ego boosters along the way like my 340 Duster that I could hardly keep on the road in the winter time because of the touchy accelerator and those nasty wide ovals which were like skis that didn't really know which way to go. Then there was a 1968 barracuda that I totalled before I got a whole lot of miles on it. A couple of pick-up trucks found their way into my driveway. Then finally the little tiny high mileage cars.

Every darn one of those cars were exciting for at least the first bit of time while I had them. I just know that what I felt everytime a different car came into my life is just like what Robinson is feeling. It's always great.

My 1st car was a 1966 Ford Ranch Wagon (station wagon) with a straight six and three speed on the column. Ran good and was nice inside, but I had to do the clutch, rear and starter within the first year and it had low miles on it. That's if the prior owner didn't disconnect the odometer for a few years. It was a great hunting vehicle.

I sold it and got a nice 69 GTO. My girlfriend was pissed when I did. She loved that station wagon. ;)

Erussel, it's not a worry what your daughter drives, other than for the safety factor. You need to worry about what her boyfriend drives.

I couldn't agree more!!!

My first was a 97 ford escort. Two weeks later I wrapped it around a flat bed truck that ran a red light because the sun was in his eyes!!!

congrats and be safe Robinson!!!
