Just look right through him like you are staring into outer space and say in your best Peter Lorre impression.... " It's the VOICES...The VOICES told me to come to the range today...Would you mind going downrange to change my TARGET for me ? "...2 points

Had it happen about a month ago. I told him I was shooting handloads and I thought the manual was way to conservative in the allowable pwoder charge and I thought my gun could take it. He didn't hang around.2 points

So here it is a youth can hunt at 14 and 15 in nice weather, gets a nice buck or doe , fawn whatever. Turns 16 an now faces reg season rules... thinks back on how great hunting in warm weather was but thats bow season now, so he/ she decides they would rather learn to bow hunt than gun... A new bow hunter is born!!! this will happen beyond a doubt. Quit whining about safety, sm game hunters shooting at squirrels in trees with bird shot and .22's is more dangerous than a hunter shooting at game on the ground and we as bow hunter have put up with that for years!!! let alone grouse/duck hunters raining pellets down on me onnthe edge of a swamp. This is a start, ...yes it may need tweeking, (say close bow for the weekend of youth hunt to placate the "sky is falling crowd" also gets around that pesky legislation that forbids gun in the wood during bow...which would also eliminate all small game, duck and goose hunting as written i believe ... .For those of you that have youngsters young enough to partcipate good luck i say!! teach them well!! for those that want to whine and complain ...deal with it its happening...2 points

City Board of Health approved Bloombergs proposal to ban all sugary drink above 16 ounces from being served in restaurants and concession stands. What's shocking was the vote was passed 8 to 0 with only 1 vote abstaining. A little bit more of our freedom just got strippped away.1 point

I found the easiest way to get rid of a fellow sportsman, especially a hunter, is to tell them I lost my last deer hunting spot, and I'm currently looking for somebody to show me some decent spots on public land, or preferably, private land. One time in 20 they will actually offer to take you along, which is a bonus. The remaining times they will just walk away and avoid eye contact, which is a bonus also.1 point

From what I have read here, Elk are grazers and wouldn't do well up north. Much better suited for the Moose that are already there.1 point

There you go again, assume assume assume. I have never heard one single person say that this youth season is going to be the end all be all salvation to our recruitment problems, including the DEC. That is something that YOU are making up in an attempt to come up with something to complain about.1 point

I've been a NWCO for several years and have caught 1,000+ skunks in live traps. I've never once been sprayed. They will spray with a conibear! Even if it's just released along with other bodily fluids after death. Honestly, for liability reasons, a conibear just isn't worth the risk of catching the neighbors cat or dog in the trap. If a neighbor went out looking for fluffy or fido, that didn't return home last night, and found it in your conibear, the Humane Society and God only knows who all (media?) would be called and on your ass. Not worth it. JMHO... If you don't want to mess with it or risk being sprayed, hire someone.1 point

Congrats on your shortest post ever. I gave you a +1. Keep up the good work.1 point

No, but it sure is better than the non idea's those opposed to it came up with. (well plus or minus a few tweaks) Like it or not it's happening. So are you going to answer my question? I don't have time right now to see who said what.1 point

Are the same people who complain about losing hunters now thinking that the youth hunt is the only salvation of hunting?1 point

The good old "Crock Pot" is the best for utilizing all the meat on a Squirrel, Cover them with water in your crock pot and let them go a few hours from morning until afternoon. Take them out and the meat will virtually fall off the bones and is tender, put the boned meat back into the pot with the broth and add a bag of mixed vegetables and let it go until the veggies are done. Season with salt and pepper, eat it as is like soup or thicken it like stew, it is eating that is as good as it gets. Al1 point

Yikes.... never let anyone draw my bow and i NEVER draw it without a arrow on the string... never know what could happen!1 point

Long story short, don't let friends touch your bow. Buddy had the string slip at almost full draw. He's gonna pay for the cam so that eases some of pain. My backup plan is on its way to my door tomorrow. Got a smoking deal on a 2012 Deadeye, couldn't resist.1 point

mmmmmmmmmmmm im gettin hungry. ok back to the basic's. take 2or 3 squirrel's and 1/4(quarter) them. lil bit of butter and a couple slices of bacon(slab is best but processed will do) in a fry pan and brown the meat. take the meat out of the pan and let cool for about 5 min....save the grease(drippings) from the pan for later. pull the meat from the bones and cruble the bacon then set to the side. make yourself some taters, rice, egg noodles,or any other form of pasta. with the dripping's bring back to a low simmer(boil) and add a mix of water(cold tap) and flour(corn starch works better) seasoned with a bit of pepper. slowly add the water/flour mix to the pan with the dripping's while contantly stirring(this is the important part) do NOT walk away. stir together in the pan until you remember what grandma's gravy looked like now add in the rest of the meat and just let it go for about 45 min or so. depending on how thick you made that gravy you may have to add water(tablespoon) at a time so that id dont burn(think of making a stew with a heavy sauce after the cooking time you will have what looks like gravy with meat in it. turn off the heat... give it a stir one more time for luck and serve over the tater's,rice,ect...ect...ect. good luck and all's i can tell you is...........DONT FORGET THE BACON.1 point

The only time I use a bottle is when I am in a blind . I sure won't pee on the ground inside the blind and I don't want to step outside and get busted . I dump it a few feet from the blind . I plastic coffee container works great . A Maxwell container works best ......"good to the last drop" !1 point

Ok my turn! I am totally against the youth gun hunt. I am against all the youth hunts actually. And I am a father. I have been hunting a long time and started at the young age of 14 with my father. He taught me the way of the woods and how to be a true sportsmen. I looked forward to all those times and it was a honor and privilage to hunt with him and all the older crowd. There was no special treatments or oppurtunities I had to learn to hang and act like an adult, be respectful and listen to what they told me to do. It seems to me with youth hunts such as this one it only shows how spoiled todays youth can be by giving them special privilages as if they deserved it cause they are kids. Our role as mentors to our youth about hunting should be proper sportsmenship and understanding of the outdoors. But on the same token we should be mentoring them on the facts of life and how we do not get special privilages just because. Now I know this may seem a bit harsh and will probably get alot of negative comments but it is how I feel. Like I said I am a father. My child is much to young to hunt but someday she may if she chooses and I will Mentor her like my father did to me. Now I know what's done is done and we have had a special youth hunt for waterfowl, turkey and pheasants for years now and it was only a matter of time before deer would follow. Could New York State and DEC come up with a better date? Oct 1st bow hunt, 1st time ever good portion of the state is allowed to hunt 2 weeks earlier then normal. Now Oct 1st falls on a Monday, some of us will get out for the opener but majority will be out the 1st Saturday. Now guys will be in full camo and since its still early October trees and brush will still have full cover making it very difficult to see. Now your putting a firearm in the hands of a unexperienced youth. Regardless if the adult is right along side of them the youth is still the one pulling the trigger. And in a lot of regions some of these kids will be using high powered rifles. No where does it state in 2012-13 guide or even on the website to stay out of the woods, nor does it say for the rest of bow hunters wear manditory blaze orange! I just dont get it sorry just my opinion. I personally feel that if indeed a youth deer hunt is necessary then why not the Saturday and Sunday the gun opener is now, close bow hunting that weekend and bring back the Monday opener for the rest!! Makes sense to me1 point

I know it sounds weird,But I do all my pre-season Suffolk scouting wearing my chest waders I use for surf casting. It keeps me protected up to my arm pits.I also wear long sleeve t-shirt with rubber gloves.Yes,I must appear like a seriel killer if anyone see's me in the woods,But Lyme disease scares the hell out me.1 point

This is the best guy that came out of my cam that I pulled for the first time today. I had some doe as well cruising through but this guy liked the cam I guess lol. Public land deer. Nice to see even if I don't during the season.1 point

At the risk of whizzing off those who like this idea, I hope I can express my view as well without coming under attack. I think this youth special youth stuff is BS. Having grown up without a father in the home, it was my uncles who introduced me to hunting and fishing. The time we sent together was some of the most meaningful of my life and I looked forward to each opening day "trout season", "pike season", "bass season", wood chuck hunting, "squirrel season", "bow season for deer", "gun season for deer" and then beagles for "rabbit season". It was not only the "hunting" aspect but also the time with caring adults, their support and encouragement, the stories and laughing, the entire experience that came with the preparation for and buildup to the experience of the coming "season". Fishing since about seven years old and hunting since about age 13, I am as active and excited each year at 53 for the coming of each "season". With my own kids grown and gone, now days I have nephews to keep pumped up, and we hunt on the land I now own. I have come a long way from the little kid growing up in the middle of the city, who likely without the influence of my grandfather and uncles, would have had an entirely different life than I do. I have been an active game club member over the years, a county level sportsmen representative and introduced both kids and adults to the joy of hunting. After all this chatter, I guess I don't understand the need to carve out a few days to put young kids along with their adult "companion" in the woods for additional opportunity to take deer or turkeys. I guess I'm a bit jaded in my older years, because I see this driven as much by adults wanting to get an upper hand to take game early under the guise of doing something for "kids" than actually doing anything for young hunters. I just don't see the need for special seasons, when for me every season has always been "special", and with almost three month long deer season's in New York, there seems plenty of time and opportunity to help shape and mentor new hunters both young and old to experience hunting season as something "special" and not just a chance to shoot an animal. Peace, NYH1 point

The DEC says it urges bowhunters to set their bows aside and mentor a youth. I don't have anyone old enough to mentor, and there's no way in hell I'm staying home that weekend.1 point

I am all for new hunter recruitment, but I think there will be a couple problems. 1: The shooting will send the deer into the parallel dimension that they vanish into during regular season. I think you'll see an overall reduction in harvest during the rest of archery season, and end up with a lot of frustrated bow hunters. 2: You've got novice gun hunters in the woods, mixed in with bow guys in full camo. Granted, they are supposed to be mentored, but I don't think it's a good combo. Why not do the youth season the weekend before regular opens? That way the kids get their chance, and the bow guys get their season without having a bunch of scared deer and interruption from gun hunters. I know I'm going to end up kicking at least a couple guys off my land during the youth hunt. It doesn't take much to mess up a bowhunt, and the deer take a while to settle down after all the shooting and sudden presence of people in the woods. Again, I'm all for the youth hunt, but I think the timing is really stupid. How many guys are going to take junior out in the woods, and shoot the deer themselves? I know most of us are honest, but I wonder how many abuse the youth hunts?1 point

there is nothing like the feeling of shooting a deer with a family members gun you have inherited. I have inherited guns from my dad mom and ex father in law. When it happens you really get a feeling you are not alone. I would recommend trying them out.1 point
