After reading several threads about the Sandy Hook tragedy and gun control I am dumbfounded with all the personal attacks, insults and mudslinging that is being hurled on this forum. The fact remains that there are 26 people dead at the hands of a person who as of now we don't know the reason or motive behind this brutal tragedy other than the fact that he was mentally unstable. This is not the first time and we all know that sadly it will not be the last time something like this will happen. Good points have been made on both sides of the argument for and against more gun control. With all the arguments going back and forth I know one thing for certain, there is one common denominator - both pros and the antis do not like hearing or seeing events like what happened on Friday or this past summer in the Aurora movie theater and in the Sikh temple in Wisconsin or the mall in Oregon just this past week. Just today some guy was arrested for threatening to set his wife on fire and then shooting up a school for goodness sake. With that common denominator in mind, rather than tossing insults, don't you all think that actually coming up with a solution or several solutions which some on here have already suggested, so that we can come to some sort of compromise that will appease both sides to prevent these tragedies in the future? Isn't that the common goal we all want to achieve? The pro-gunners' argument usually hinges on arming everyone in the country and the anti's argument usually hinges on doing away with all guns in this country and allowing only the government to possess firearms. These arguments have gone in circles and have not done anything to prevent these tragedies. I think we all agree that there is not just one cause to the problem our society is facing that is resulting in these mass murders. There are several root causes among them a combination of which include lack of interest or care by parents in the home, broken homes, violence on TV, in movies and in video games, and mental illness which is abundant in our country and often times difficult to detect let alone control. So where and how do we begin? I am not sure where or how but firstly, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that we need to stop the mudslinging and insults against one another - that is just going to get us nowhere. Secondly we need to address and deal with the root causes mentioned above. Even though I'm a strong proponent of the 2nd amendment and I will defend my right as well as those of fellow responsible gun owners to own firearms to protect ourselves and our families, there have to be some checks and balances in place to prevent mentally unstable people from having "access to" weapons of any kind. We've all heard it before and we will continue to hear it said that gun control laws do not get illegal guns off the street - they just prevent law abiding citizens from protecting ourselves. With that also in mind although the guns that were used in the Sandy Hook massacre were legally purchased and registered to the mother who was a gun enthusiast, doesn't being a responsible gun owner mean making sure that your guns are locked up and inaccessible other than to you when you are not present and especially when you know you have a family member who has a known mental illness living in your home? Shouldn't those gun owners who find themselves in that situation be held accountable (except of course this kid's mother who can't be held accountable anymore as she was the first one killed)? Now putting aside the disgruntled employees who shoot up their workplace, isn't it usually the "quiet ones" or "socially awkward ones" that are the ones committing these vicious crimes for no apparent reason? Why are we as a people doing anything more to keep them in check? As we all know when we purchase long guns like the one used in the Sandy Hook tragedy, we have to go through somewhat of a background check. Maybe that background check should be a little bit more thorough to be able to weed out those with mental illnesses and those who have mentally ill members living in their home. Why shouldn't there be a follow up check for those who fill out the paperwork and who mark "no" when asked if there is a history of mental illness in one's family? Why are gun dealers taking people's word for it instead of having the ability to investigate further? Moreover, just like there is a registry once you become a convicted felon, or a terrorist on a do not fly watch list, or a sex offender on a registry, why shouldn't there be a registry for those who have been diagnosed with mental illnesses? There will be those who will be offended by this suggestion, but to bring you all back to reality, one common denominator had between most of these past shooters is mental instability and easy access to firearms. I'm not saying that there should be or there shouldn't be such a registry, but there needs to be some kind of stronger checks and balances system in place that will ensure that firearms do not fall into the hands of mentally unstable people. Maybe we should allow law abiding citizens, who are mentally stable, and who are properly trained to handle a firearm to be able to carry. As we already know and many of us agree, these shooters always target a place where the victims are defenseless, i.e. theaters, schools, churches, temples and the like. We certainly never hear of or read about a shooter targeting a police station. Maybe just maybe if these shooters knew that there was a possibility that one or more persons in the school, the theater, the temple, or the mall was carrying, they would think twice about carrying out their plans. I just read this morning that in a school in Texas, teachers are permitted to be armed provided that they go through the proper channels for obtaining a CC permit for their state/county. Why are there less acts of violence like theses in states where the right to carry is more prevalent? Because these punks know that they will meet with armed resistance. There is no right or wrong answer to any of the foregoing. But if we all want these tragedies to end, then there needs to be a plan of attack put into place. The insults and mudslinging need to be put aside and "we the people" including politicians, hunters, liberals and conservatives, pros and antis need to bang our heads together until we come up with a solution. Until this is done, these tragedies will continue to happen well into the future.5 points

We used to get a real tree every year and every year the dog peed on it. It wasn't Christmas until Ralphie peed on the tree. Finally I had enough and bought a fake tree. Ralphie is gone now so I think next year we'll go back to getting a real tree. Oh the memories2 points

Just want to say I'm thinking about next season and getting some venison in the freezer for sure. I'm having surgery Jan 2 (what a way to bring in the new year) to remove part of lung and the tumor. I responded well to chemotherapy, and the tumor has shrank considerably. Doctor says results are very good so far. I missed this past season cause I've been sick, but my friend gave me some ground venison from doe he got. The burgers were so good last night. Hope everyone has Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!1 point

There was already an article in the washington post today about banning "assault rifles", but your right, it's a total crapshoot if they get it right. And these same people will continue to try to ban every other weapon possible. It's like the old cliche, "be careful what you wish for".1 point

The 2nd Ammendment has nothing to do with deer hunting. Deer hinting limitations is outlined in our conservation laws and I believe does limit Mag fed to 5 shots. the 7400 and the BAR don't offer an aftermarket in 20 or 30 round versions but several manufacturers offer a 10 round Mag. Most of the shotguns offer an extended tube Mag and the speed loaders are crazy fast to use. Using a litmus test as to what you have a need for is a huge error. The same group that will be pushing for these limits ans bans to take place are the same groups that won't address the real problems under the guise of limiting freedoms and rights. Ironic don't you think? Maybe since som many are pointing to the sensationalizing by the media as a contributing factor in the frequency of these horrors we should be banning TV ...internet...things like that too?1 point

Robinson my man ..... where have you been? Good to hear from you again. Ok, first of all there are three things you never want to argue with a teacher over. That would be politics, religion and firearms ... lol. These are all things that you will always lose in one way or another. Understand that your teacher is not your buddy or your friend, but rather a person of authority that has your future in your hands. It's kind of like having those kinds of arguments with your boss. You lose before you even begin. Was this by any chance your English teacher? As far as your stance on the subject, there's nothing there that I would argue with. But you need to know who to pick your arguments with. Understand that teachers are people too, and as such may be impaired with certain trained-in, political orientations. You just know, or at least by now you have found out, that there is no way that you are ever going to change your teacher's mind. So learn to pick your battles and try to argue only over things that lack emotionality. Also, never do battle with people who can hurt you. Also, try to see teachers as a resource, and not an adversary. They are there to help you educationally and are experts in doing that. Take advantage of what they have to offer and try to ignore the rest.1 point

Exactly. I told him, out of my cold dead hands they are getting my guns. He then said, Ill be willing to bet, and ill ppay up on this bet, ive never had someone come into my house with a gun and i bet nobody ever will. And I said alright, well when they do, you call the cops, and wait 15 minutes for them to get there to save you and your family, and when someone breaks into my house, by the time someone picks up the phone to call the police, all they are gonna have to bring is a body bag to clean him up, because my gun will protect my house and my family quicker then a police officer will!1 point

OK I have no idea where you think I defended those who exploit this type of tragedy. Its simply not true and no where in any of my post is there any indication to that. Normally I would take huge offense to that but I can see that you just love this back and forth bickering so I will bow out now. If you want to continue with your constant negative post go argue with some of the other people you have irritated on this thread. You are the type of person I really try to avoid being around in my personal life. There is just too much negativity in this world. Maybe you will get in the Christmas sprit and let this post die off. Once again wishing you a Happy Holiday season!1 point

Wow I guess I should have read your last couple of statements before i responded to you in my last post. You believe people on this site had prepared responses and a plan in place for this????? What is wrong with you? Lets let this post die off. Go back and read this whole thread and it seems like a lot of talk about people with an Anti agenda but no one is really on here fighting for that. There is a lot from you defending yourself and your beliefs though. You are the one who made the statement that some people on this site look forward to that type of news. I have a hard time believing even someone who is completely Anti-Gun would ever wish this to further their agenda. Do you really believe people on this site were happy when they heard 20 children were killed? let me know your answer? Talk about exploiting a situation. How many post have you made on this topic since it started? I have already stated I have received numerous private messages from people on this subject. In everyone of them I am told to keep at it with" you "and that this is your M O and to be honest you are not painted in a very good light. This thread was moving in a positive direction lets keep it that way. Go find something else to do today. You have spent the better part of this past weekend on here trying to drive home your point and I think you have alienated a lot of people. In spite of this i wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and hope you have a happy and healthy new year., I am a bowhunter 100% I do not gun hunt but I absolutely have no problem with anyone that does and I am all for the 2nd amendment.1 point

Ha-ha-ha .... you will find that Bubba can go on and on with this kind of nonsense. In fact it will eventually get to the point where he starts to stalk your every post.... a lot like his comment on this thread. Really??? You think they are happy 20 children were killed because it helps some political agenda they might have? Do you also think Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld were high fiveing after 9/11 because it helped promote their pro-war agenda? Do you really think you are helping the cause by making stupid comments such as this?1 point

On a local forum, a lady has already have action happening and wants police at the school. On another forum, he received a call that they want to have police in the school this week. Where is this going to lead to? This will become a weaning process that will probably end with - the TSA doing their thing at schools. Experienced gropers. Remember, the TSA at the airport has more power than the police. Think about this. And my niece is one. I do believe that is where it will lead. Weaning the boiling frog.1 point

Maybe you should change that statement to: the gun owners are not willing to make any more concessions. History is littered with the failed brainchilds of the antis. Many which represent harrassments to legitimate gun owners rather than constructive restrictions aimed at real solutions. It is time to end this constant assault against gun owners. The problem of criminal violence can not be solved on the backs of law abiding gun owners. First because they don't work, and second it just plain is wrong and anti democratic in their approach. Yes, I think the the gun owners have conceded plenty over the years and it never is enough because it is the wrong end of the problem. It is designed to harness the law abiding and ignore the "slap-on-the-wrist" administration of existing laws. In other words, the efforts of the antis is focused on the law abiding while at the same time creating more permissiveness and loopholes for the law braekers. And then we sit around all "dumbfounded" that we are in the situation that we are in. The fact is that it is this kind of backward campaign against the law abiding that results in one more reason for keeping the reasonable access to weapons for self protection. The incremental path to private firearms removal has got to cease and work put toward criminal control where it belongs.1 point

No more stupid than using such a tragedy to further an anti gun agenda... this is not remotely about guns... just a tool used in a senseless crime... could have been poison, a bomb or piano wire... this is about the break down of our society and family unit with liberal progressive thinking... until we start realizing that.. you can take away all the guns in the world and it won't do a lick of good. smart decisions are made with the head... rash decisions are made with the heart... we should be using our hearts to feel for the people affected by this tragedy and use our heads to solve it... thinking that this is about guns is a knee jerk reaction made in the hearts of people not a realistic solution thought out with ones head. How's this for stupid? Keep pushing the gun issue and see where that gets you with these kinds of heinous crimes...1 point

I am dumbfounded in that someone breaks a laundry list of laws meant to stop actions like this and the first thing people want to do is add more laws and restrictions. The people committing these crimes could careless what is supposedly in place to stop them. They plan and strategies to create the maximum impact with weapons available to them. The quantity of ammo or type of weapon typically not the limiting factor in ended the event. The events ends when the coward out end decide to eliminate themselves. It is about controlling the event to them. How many end it themselves with unused weapons and ammo readily available? There is not a law you can pass that will stop a indifferent person who has zero regard for human life from carrying out a their plan for their final self gratification and final control.1 point

Let's see, are we calling these rifles "black rifles", "assault rifles", or "paramilitary rifles"? Which one has the most evil connotation to it. How about semi-automatic rifle? That is probably the truest description. but then no one is interested in that emotionless description. It has no theatrical punch that is needed to whip up the maximum hatred .... lol.1 point

Man, that doesn't surprise me one bit! Hope he stays safe long enough to drop the other side for ya. I'd hate to hear he got popped by someone thinking he's a doe. Now where was I...... 12-14-12 Headed out early this morning to move the cams around and continue the search for "side B"! I finally got them all where I wanted them to be and got back to horn huntin'! For now, my main goal was to hit this bedding area where I found the first antler. I just had a feeling the mate was somewhere near bye if I could stay focused and not get discouraged looking through this dense cover. Unfortunately, my first find of the day was another dead buck. I'd been finding fresh leg bones and hair that the yotes had spread out in the area but could never find the carcass. I never did find it, instead I located the skull with part of the spine that must have gotten dragged away. A burly little 6pt. He'd been there a while and was really cleaned up right down to the brains. Most likely from early archery sometime or roadkilled....dunno....don't care. I packed him up and headed back down to kill the day trying to complete my first set of the season. It didn't take long before I saw that big bone-white arch laying ahead of me! I couldn't decide which camera to use for the ATL so here's a few from both to give you an idea of what this area is like! ... and a shot of the base. No blood on this one either but they don't get much fresher than this. ... and here's the days haul with yesterdays mate! Antlers- 2 Dead bucks- 2 Match sets- 1 Dead doe and fawns- 01 point
