  1. As many of you know, I am one of the more liberal members of this site. I think our country needs stricter gun laws. That is not to say I want law abiding citizens to lose the right to bear arms. I'm an avid hunter. My sons just turned 12 and I can not wait to be able to take them out this spring for their first turkeys. I live in NYC, where gun registration and 5 round max magazines are already the norm, and I'm OK with that. I think private sales at gun shows with no background checks are ridiculous. I believe fully automatic weapons should not be in the hands of private citizens. I don't think a fifty round drum is a necessity to have fun at the gun range. I could list more examples, but I think that is enough to give you an idea of where I stand. That being said, I also hate people who turn a national tragedy into disaster-porn, and use it to push an agenda. I despise articles that blindly condemn firearms, written by people who have absolutely no idea about how a gun works. Every time I see current buzz words like, "military-style", "high-capacity" or the ever popular "assault weapon" without any quantifying guidelines about the definition of such words, I cringe. Seriously, how is one supposed to interpret what a "military-style" weapon is? Last time I checked the M24 was still used by the Army. Does that make my Remington 700 "military-style"? Where is the line that separates "high-capacity" from a normal magazine? More than five? Ten? Twenty? I won't even comment on everything that gets called an "assault weapon" these days, it would take too long. I believe, as a nation, our gun laws are too relaxed. I believe there are measures that can be put into place which would help prevent tragedies like the ones that happened in Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek and Newtown. If you are of mind set that any restrictions are evil and against our rights as citizens, you are a dinosaur and useless to this discussion. Equally useless is the other side of the spectrum. If you tell me "Weapon Free Zones" are the answer, I have two words for you, "Soft Targets". Banning responsible, law abiding citizens access to firearms should never, and will never, happen. Both sides need to come together and work towards making our country safer. I hope that our elected officials can focus more on common sense, and less on political posturing. No law can be passed that will completely eliminate the possibility of another catastrophe like this from happening. However, I do feel that changes can be made to lessen the likelihood. Our country is in mourning. Again. I wish that all of our representatives have the wisdom and the desire to help us heal. Edit: Fixed a typo.

  6. Steve. The military weapon argument is kind of tired. The majority of our hunting guns came from military developments. Revolvers- military. lever actions- Military. Bolt guns- were military developed. Semi Auto loaders. yup you guess it. Military again. Let's not use that as a basis for this discussion. Everyone is hung up on 30 round Mags. In those tight and UNARMED quarters a shotgun would be much deadlier. If our evaluation level is weapon capacity take a semi auto shotgun with a tube extender to 8 shot capacity and load it with F shot which is .22 caliber and a count of 39. That is equivelent to over 8 .....30 round mags. (there is a speed difference but at class room distances dead is dead) It is nuts to give an inch based on emotion and not fight this puish that is coming. If the hunting and target community spit from "other" gun owners it is only time. If you think otherwise you are mistaken. Side step the 2nd once and they will do it again because if you pulled every assault rifle off the street...I mean everyone and even every pistol, This will not stop. It isn't the root of the problem , The guns never have been, but those that want them gone are the problem becasue they are the same ones that feel you can't disciplinge you kids....can't hold people accountable. can't lock people up and leave them there, can't FRY them

  7. Well partner, I reckon you're probably wrong. I have the same policy toward them as I would have toward any business. I cannot and should not dictate what products any store stocks and sells unless I have some moral objection to it. I can't picture a situation where I would boycott a store based on something it doesn't sell. I don't deal with Dicks that much anyhow. But like any other store, if they have a product I want to buy and they have a good price on it, I'll be in there. Not every Walmart store sells a full complement of shooting and hunting equipment, and I haven't boycotted them because of it. That's a pretty silly notion.

  10. here it is guys Gun Control and the Second Amendment The Second Amendment states the citizens right to own and bear firearms. Freedom to pose arms is a guaranteed citizen right. If the constitutional rights of a citizen are violated, it can be a major issue. Gun control has been an issue for years. A majority of citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would demolish the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection and hunting. These people are penalized for protecting their lives or for enjoying an innocent sport. To enforce gun control throughout the nation, means violating a persons rights. Although some people feel that the issue of gun control will reduce crime, the issue should not exist due to the fact that guns are necessary for self defense against crime. Enforcing gun control is violating a citizens Second Amendment right to bear arms. Guns are evil and horrible to some because of the violence that they create. People feel guns are weapons of death. They believe that the more guns with which our society has access to, the greater the chance for accidents or violence involving fire arms to occur. It is a proven fact that handguns have been the murder weapon of choice. Guns are involved in lots of homicide cases. People believe that society relies on weapons that create harm and criminals, therefore, these weapons should be outlawed. However, law abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves against danger. In light of the recent shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, many people feel that the shooting would have been prevented if there was stricter gun control. I feel that had this very disturbed man wanted to harm those children he would have found a way to do so even if he had no guns. I also think that if all schools were to have an armed and trained officer or security guard on duty at all times this horrible tragedy possibly would not have happened or maybe more innocent lives would have been saved because the security guard would have been able to use his weapon to harm the shooter and protect the children. I was speaking with a friend about this issue recently. He said that he thinks it's okay if the Government takes away the ability for civilians to purchase and own all military issue weapons, such as the ones used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but to take away sporting rifles used to feed families, such as mine and his, that is what he feels is really wrong. There are 12.6 million legal hunters in the US today. And I bet you a majority of those feed their families with the venison the animals provide. And for the people who do not eat what they kill, every state that allows hunting has a venison donation program that donates the uneaten meat to homeless shelters. So not only do guns provide protection, but they also provide food, jobs, memories, and hobbies for many people to enjoy. Due to the ownership of guns, burglaries have reduced greatly. This fact was proven with a poll taken after and before Australia banned all weapons. After the ban of guns, the number of burglaries went up due to the lack of self defense people can provide their families. A gun is a tool, guns don't kill people. People kill people. The matter depends on who is using the gun and what situation it is involved in. Purchasing a weapon legally is complex. When my father and I purchased our first gun, he had to enter all his personal information, so the store could run a background check on him. But even then he went to the store and purchased the gun and left with the gun the same day. The gun buyer must go through a two month waiting period to obtain a handgun. These procedures guarantee the innocence and reliability of a gun owner, or so they say. There should be NO military issue weapons available to purchase by civilians. You do not need an AR to hunt deer when a Remington hunting rifle does the same thing. I also feel to own a gun you need to have a hunting license, period. To obtain your hunting license you need to attend two and sometimes three full day classes and pass the over 100 question exam at the end of each day. The majority of the classes are safety and ethics, if you want a gun you need to know those rules. Even though I support the right to bear arms I do feel that they should do a more thorough procedure to be able to own a gun. I feel they should find a way to check back on the persons medical background to ensure they have no mental issues that may mean they are capable of harming others purposefully. Nothing can destroy a government more quickly than its failure to observe its own laws. This is why all citizens should be aware of all of their constitutional rights. Enforcing gun control is not going to have an effect on the crime rate, because it will not keep criminals from purchasing weapons. Gun owners have to protect themselves from these criminals, and all gun owners must be informed of their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

  14. I simply don't think owning a pistol should automatically give one the right to carry it at all times. Sorry. Two different issues in my view. It's not the law currently in most places, so I don't think a CC should be made any easier. I personally think it's too easy in many places already.

When the public sees a group that's opposed to any and all compromise of their 'right to bear arms', even when it infringes or threatens others right to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness', it makes it easier to categorize us all as whackos.

  29. An old man in Miami calls up his son in New York and says, "Listen, your mother and I are getting divorced. Forty-five years of misery is enough." "Dad, what are you talking about?" the son screams. “We can't stand the sight of each other any longer,” he says. "I'm sick of her face, and I'm sick of talking about this, so call your sister in Chicago and tell her," and he hangs up. Now, the son is worried. So he calls up his sister. She says, "Like hell they’re getting divorced!" and calls her father immediately. "You’re not getting divorced! Don't do another thing, the two of us are flying home tomorrow to talk about this. Until then, don't call a lawyer, don't file a paper, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and she hangs up. The old man turns to his wife and says "Okay, they’re coming for Christmas and paying their own airfares."

Well this one runs along very thick brush and a hardwoods, which like most hardwoods is thick along the edge. now i can walk in silently, instead of fighting my way through making all kinds of noise. The deer started using it the next day as well,so new places for stands. It also allows excess to an area instead of walking WAY around, is faster and easier to get deer out and stands in . Most folks who hunt thick areas need to cut trails, few to this extreme.....

  37. OBAMA: We're a nation that believes in the Second Amendment, and I believe in the Second Amendment. We've got a long tradition of hunting and sportsmen and people who want to make sure they can protect themselves. My belief is that we have to enforce the laws we've already got, make sure that we're keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, those who are mentally ill. We've done a much better job in terms of background checks, but we've got more to do when it comes to enforcement. But weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don't belong on our streets. Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced. But part of it is also looking at other sources of the violence. Because frankly, in my home town of Chicago, there's an awful lot of violence and they're not using AK-47s. They're using cheap hand guns.

  39. After reading several threads about the Sandy Hook tragedy and gun control I am dumbfounded with all the personal attacks, insults and mudslinging that is being hurled on this forum. The fact remains that there are 26 people dead at the hands of a person who as of now we don't know the reason or motive behind this brutal tragedy other than the fact that he was mentally unstable. This is not the first time and we all know that sadly it will not be the last time something like this will happen. Good points have been made on both sides of the argument for and against more gun control. With all the arguments going back and forth I know one thing for certain, there is one common denominator - both pros and the antis do not like hearing or seeing events like what happened on Friday or this past summer in the Aurora movie theater and in the Sikh temple in Wisconsin or the mall in Oregon just this past week. Just today some guy was arrested for threatening to set his wife on fire and then shooting up a school for goodness sake. With that common denominator in mind, rather than tossing insults, don't you all think that actually coming up with a solution or several solutions which some on here have already suggested, so that we can come to some sort of compromise that will appease both sides to prevent these tragedies in the future? Isn't that the common goal we all want to achieve? The pro-gunners' argument usually hinges on arming everyone in the country and the anti's argument usually hinges on doing away with all guns in this country and allowing only the government to possess firearms. These arguments have gone in circles and have not done anything to prevent these tragedies. I think we all agree that there is not just one cause to the problem our society is facing that is resulting in these mass murders. There are several root causes among them a combination of which include lack of interest or care by parents in the home, broken homes, violence on TV, in movies and in video games, and mental illness which is abundant in our country and often times difficult to detect let alone control. So where and how do we begin? I am not sure where or how but firstly, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that we need to stop the mudslinging and insults against one another - that is just going to get us nowhere. Secondly we need to address and deal with the root causes mentioned above. Even though I'm a strong proponent of the 2nd amendment and I will defend my right as well as those of fellow responsible gun owners to own firearms to protect ourselves and our families, there have to be some checks and balances in place to prevent mentally unstable people from having "access to" weapons of any kind. We've all heard it before and we will continue to hear it said that gun control laws do not get illegal guns off the street - they just prevent law abiding citizens from protecting ourselves. With that also in mind although the guns that were used in the Sandy Hook massacre were legally purchased and registered to the mother who was a gun enthusiast, doesn't being a responsible gun owner mean making sure that your guns are locked up and inaccessible other than to you when you are not present and especially when you know you have a family member who has a known mental illness living in your home? Shouldn't those gun owners who find themselves in that situation be held accountable (except of course this kid's mother who can't be held accountable anymore as she was the first one killed)? Now putting aside the disgruntled employees who shoot up their workplace, isn't it usually the "quiet ones" or "socially awkward ones" that are the ones committing these vicious crimes for no apparent reason? Why are we as a people doing anything more to keep them in check? As we all know when we purchase long guns like the one used in the Sandy Hook tragedy, we have to go through somewhat of a background check. Maybe that background check should be a little bit more thorough to be able to weed out those with mental illnesses and those who have mentally ill members living in their home. Why shouldn't there be a follow up check for those who fill out the paperwork and who mark "no" when asked if there is a history of mental illness in one's family? Why are gun dealers taking people's word for it instead of having the ability to investigate further? Moreover, just like there is a registry once you become a convicted felon, or a terrorist on a do not fly watch list, or a sex offender on a registry, why shouldn't there be a registry for those who have been diagnosed with mental illnesses? There will be those who will be offended by this suggestion, but to bring you all back to reality, one common denominator had between most of these past shooters is mental instability and easy access to firearms. I'm not saying that there should be or there shouldn't be such a registry, but there needs to be some kind of stronger checks and balances system in place that will ensure that firearms do not fall into the hands of mentally unstable people. Maybe we should allow law abiding citizens, who are mentally stable, and who are properly trained to handle a firearm to be able to carry. As we already know and many of us agree, these shooters always target a place where the victims are defenseless, i.e. theaters, schools, churches, temples and the like. We certainly never hear of or read about a shooter targeting a police station. Maybe just maybe if these shooters knew that there was a possibility that one or more persons in the school, the theater, the temple, or the mall was carrying, they would think twice about carrying out their plans. I just read this morning that in a school in Texas, teachers are permitted to be armed provided that they go through the proper channels for obtaining a CC permit for their state/county. Why are there less acts of violence like theses in states where the right to carry is more prevalent? Because these punks know that they will meet with armed resistance. There is no right or wrong answer to any of the foregoing. But if we all want these tragedies to end, then there needs to be a plan of attack put into place. The insults and mudslinging need to be put aside and "we the people" including politicians, hunters, liberals and conservatives, pros and antis need to bang our heads together until we come up with a solution. Until this is done, these tragedies will continue to happen well into the future.

  40. I don't forgot who said it but there was a qoute that went something like this: Someone asked a wise man "how do I become a better person" The wise man responds "find the one philosopher you disagree with...then read his book." The point is, it is good to debate with people who opposes your views with an open mind. One of the reason you get into a debate isn't always to prove you're right, but to grow as a person. Just remember. When the KKK member asked his KKK friends if what he's doing is the right thing, none of them told him what he was doing was wrong.

  44. Please stop lying about my words. I even went to the trouble of re-quoting what I said and yet you still insist on saying that it was about people on this site. I will repeat that I did not include any words about people on this site. The first time you misquoted that it may have been a mistake. The second time it is a lie. The connection with someone on this site was first made by you when you became so indignant and began to defend these people. You put yourself in that bucket .... I didn't. As far as this thread never ending, I will say that I am only reacting to each of your posts. You seemed to have made a career out of attacking me and my opinion about the people that exploit these kinds of tragedies for their own agenda. That is your choice not mine. As far as your contention that I have alienated some people, imagine what people must think of you to be defending those that thrive on exploiting tragedy for their own ends. If I alienate those that believe that such callous exploitation is proper conduct, then I guess that probably is no big loss. I am even more sorry that there are people that believe that defending these people is the right thing to do. I find no possible defense for those that would exploit tragedies of any kind just to further their political causes. And I don't apologize for that nor do I find any common ground with those that do.

  45. Frankly I know that the people noted are rabid fanatical gun control advocates that have spent decades doing whatever they can to eliminate guns. It is their life's ambition and they hope it to become a part of their legacy. Yes, I believe that they are perfectly willing and happy to exploit this tragedy for their own agenda. And as a matter of fact they have begun already. I am sure that they feel sorry for the lives lost, but will not hesitate for even a minute to exploit the situation for their own benefit and the furtherance of their ambitions and agenda. And the proof is in their immediate enthusiastic reactions. They are not wasting a minute of this opportunity and most likely had a response already prepared and a plan in place for this event even before it happened.

  47. I think this is a 2 sided discussion and both are pertinent to talk about. A) Would registering your guns one time with serial numbers with the state or fed gov't protect the gun owner if the guns were stolen or used in a crime? Would this in turn, over time, contribute to a major decrease in killings by thugs and criminals who obtain the guns illegally? I would not be against it because I actually intend to take pics of each gun I own with a 3x5 card listing the model and serial number for my homeowners insurance in case of theft. Also for proof to police that I did indeed own those guns and have been reported stolen in the event of their use in a murder. I also feel that each time a gun is purchased from an individual, the purchaser would pay a nominal fee, say $10 for the transfer thru a dealer. Pain in the ass... a little bit for sure. But you have to do this with handguns now any way. I feel that if this were to be implemented that, over time, it very well Could have an effect on reducing the number of senseless killings that go on in this country every day. Like I said elsewhere, even the sound minded individual who goes wacko because his wife left him for another man or a similar situation can never be foreseen or prevented. But if we could make a major decrease, over time, in the reckless acts of drive by shootings and house shootings, like where the 2 yo child was killed in his grammas arms when thugs shot through the front door of a house in Atlanta I'm all for it. I'm all in favor of trying to stop the day by day senseless acts of murder on people all over this country and if a well thought out plan that included registering my guns would help... I'm all for it.
