  2. Well after a long season of hunting with a bunch of ups and downs the season finally came to a successful end. After many long days on stand it finally came together like we all hope it does. It was Dec 27th and my brother John and I were perched high in our stands overlooking spots that we had been getting lots of trailcam pics over the last few weeks. I was watching the group of 5 does which have been in the area all season feeding out in the open and slowly working my way. I had no interest in them as I already had a doe and a 7 pt in the freezer but watching them was a nice way to pass the time as the season was winding down. Today I had one thing on my mind and it was to take one of the nice bucks that had been eluding us all season. At around 3:30 I looked to my left and saw a nice buck quickly walking down one of the trails that the deer like to use. He was going to walk right into the open but he was cursing. I quickly turned on my camera and pointed it in the deer’s direction. As the deer got into the open I quickly made a noise to stop him and sent an arrow his way. I watched it disappear behind the buck’s shoulder and a feeling of excitement and accomplishment came over me. I called my brother John who was hunting near by to help me recover the buck. We quickly found my arrow covered with good blood, we were off to a great start. Once John and I started further down the trail we realized that the blood trail was almost nonexistent. We looked until dark and found very little. We decided to head back to base camp to meet up with our buddy Charlie “The Bloodhound”. If anyone can follow a blood trail it’s Charlie. We tracked for about an hour in the dark following a sparse blood trail. Then all of a sudden we were back where we had started. It turns out that in the dark we got turned around without realizing it and were heading the wrong way. At this point I was starting to second guess my shot placement, was it as good as I had previously thought? We decided to call the search dogs to help. The dispatcher said he would call me back in about 20 minuets. In that time we started back down the blood trail. After another 15 minuets of tracking I got a call from the person with the tracking dogs, but at the exact same moment I heard Charlie say “There he is”. Finally I thought as I rushed over to see where I had hit the deer. Just as I thought it was a good shot. As we field dressed the deer we notices that the arrow had caught both lungs. The deer must have clotted up quickly leaving little blood to follow. I’m extremely happy with this buck and had it not been for my brother John and Charlie helping me track him I don’t know if I would have ever found him. It was a great way to end the season and it was the latest point in the season that any of us had ever shot a nice buck. That is until John hit the woods on Dec 31st but I will let him tell that story….

  7. if that makes somebody a felon then i guess 90 percent of people on here are gonna be. cause most people own atleast one semi auto 22 or rifle .....lol i guess theres gonna be alot of coyotes running around then cause everybody on ny predator hunting association hunts with semi autos wether its a 22 or a centerfire..

  8. I don’t mean to be insensitive to the victims, families or anyone effected by recent events. But, these bills are truly ridiculous. I blame ignorance and the media spewing inaccurate information in just about every article written concerning violent crimes involving firearms. I agree something has to change, but altering our gun laws based on aesthetic features of a firearm. I don’t understand.

  9. LOL.. that was exactly my original point. Just another "feel good" program to appease the ignorant loudmouths.

  15. Yep. Its just too bad they let their selfish elitism cloud things and make them into one of the biggest culprits of pitting hunter vs hunter in NY state. As for their stance, as far as I can see, they dont really stick to it, they keep changing it to fit their needs of the moment. Its a pretty typical sign that they know they have lost their battle.

  20. Wooly, invite a friend and you both can carry one each. I have a hand axe and a couple machetes. I'd bring a machete over the heavier axe for a hike and the axe for a camping trip.

  21. the only part that is registered is the lower ( where all the trigger, safety ect mechanics are), thats it, the rest you can buy over the internet.....this is the part I'm talking about( without the tan plastic grip on the magwell) then you just have to make sure it stands up to NY assault weapons laws ei: NO COLLAPSIBLE stocks( you can have one that WAS adjustable) but its gotta be pinned so it cant move

  22. you dont want to be liable in building stands JMO... nothing against your building skills but its the liability. if you make plot clearing and ground prep affordable that would keep you more then busy.

  23. So u only want suggestions on clearing wooded areas? Starting a food plot business is very tricky. Transportation of equipment, liability insurance, issues of crop failure etc. New ground verse already worked? What kind of plot? Annual or perennial? U doing maintenance? Fertilizer? Soil samples? Plotting can be expensive but there are ways to cut costs. I think each property is unique and price will change.

  25. That actually sounds like the majority of theRochester region. Not alot of what i would call big woods around here. Give me a good chunk of brush and small woods mixed with ag fields any day over the big woods anyhow.

  29. And then from that day forward, you will be the proud owner of something that you will never dare take out of the house. I guess what I am saying is what purpose would it serve to run the risk of jail-time over something that you don't even dare shoot? I'm just trying to pull a little reality into the thread here. My thought is that if that day should ever come that the trooper is standing there asking where your gun(s) is, it is already too late. All the bold talk and activism needs to take place now before the gun laws ever get that far. Now is the time for solidarity behind organizations like the NRA, and non-stop letter-writing campaigns that put the fear of God into every politician who values their job. Because if we sit on our hands waiting for that day when the trooper is standing in our doorway, it will already be too late to really do anything about anything.

  30. Oh for gosh sakes people, how hard it is to read something in it's entirety? Look down in the instructions. The second sentence of Question 11.a. states "You are also the actual transferee/buyer if you are legitimately purchasing the firearm as a gift for a third party."

  36. They should outlaw cocaine ,heroin, and meth to keep it out of the hands of criminials ,since we are talking new laws ,that should be a new one.

  37. It's not about people giving up their guns. Two government officials brought this idea forward as a response to the latest tragedy. The police and elected county sheriff are sponsoring. The media will be there, and the slant will most likely be not good for those who understand what the 2nd amendment maintains. Another voice should be present to at least try and get a fair unbiased report. It's either complain to each other or form rapports with the event organizers, attendees, and the media to achieve gaining some professional points. This is the way it works. Probably someday, those that did nothing now, will remembers those that did, later. At least it can't be said that we didn't try to do something.

  38. I've eaten lots of deer hearts, but I find it difficult to answer that question, Bkln... The FLAVOR is definitely VENISON like..It's the TEXTURE that is unique...It is very dense meat, but still not tough...The fibers are so close together that a heart muscle does not get bloodshot like other parts of the deer. Shoot a deer through the middle of the heart and all you have to do is cut away the hole. The rest of it is fine..

  39. I tried this recipe with venison round steaks, sliced into 1/4" strips.. SUCCULENT !! The Mermaid and I polished off the whole skillet full, and we're just a couple of scrawny old senior citizens ..<<grin>>...
