i love it when a plan comes together!! Hunted a new stand location that i put up in june. right next to a funnel/intersection before a creek and open field. perfect PM spot. I knew with temps so high i wouldnt see much until dusk. sure enough, at about 6, 2 big does came through. they started making their way down another trail but i gave a soft grunt and they stopped dead in their tracks and turned my way. they came in head on and i was worried i wouldnt get a broadside shot. the big one knew something was up and was quite tense and was sniffing around. i was drawn on her for a good 30-45 seconds. she slowly turned broadside at about 20 yards and i let a rage fly. perfect shot and i watched my lighted nock fly in behind the shoulder and then stick in the ground behind her. she jumped and didnt make it more than 30 yards. great blood trail from the rage. great opening day. now im feeling confident and im looking for some of those big 8 pointers i have on camera at a few of my spots!!6 points

Well, so far up here in the NZ, Hit this decent 8pt on the afternoon hunt on Saturday, called in "hunting" to work on Sunday and recovered the buck first light, no coyotes which was a great stroke of luck, butchered him up and had to work Monday thru today, Will be back in the stand tomorrow afternoon! Really happy to have used the leftover tag from last season and not waste it! My buddy stuck an 8pt about the same size in the SZ yesterday afternoon, outside of those, only saw one guy up the road got a doe on Sat as well. It may be warm but there is a ton of sign & food for the deer this year, I have a feeling we are going to see the best season in years! Good luck all and shoot straight!!!! - 'Slayer!5 points

Hi all, New hunter here. I have gear and tags (no gun). I live in New York City where the hunting isn't great (unless you're a fan of 8th Avenue pigeon). I would really appreciate the opportunity to go hunting with someone or a group of hunters. I have access to a car and will go almost anywhere. I would love to learn from you and I will help in any way. I can drag, gut, help process, butcher, and even cook - anything you need. Nobody in my group of family or friends hunts, and I would like to learn so that one day I can go alone and teach my friends and future family how to hunt. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!2 points

I'm happy to know Mike is still working hard at his shop. He is presently working long hours right now due to a backlog of bow work, sales and service. I went in today with a problem, worked me in somehow and got me out within an hour. He didn't have to do that, but the work he did was much appreciated...A darn nice guy and a very knowledgeable archery guy.2 points

First off, welcome to the sport. Do you have a bow? What part of part of the city are you in? Your timing is a little bad because season just started so most hunters will be focus on their own hunt rather than try and drag a newbie around with them. Hunters also tend to want to get to know a hunter before bringing them out to the woods. Keep at it. Participate on this forum. Let others get to know you and maybe later on in the season, hunters will have more time available.2 points

he brought in physics experts? I'm sorry but this all sounds like a bunch of bull. No reason he can't come in here and reply to the thread, he seems intelligent enough. Post a pic of his ticket or fine (name blacked out is fine) and I'll shut up.2 points

I forgot how much i hate long sits in my old ladder stand. Thankfully i was in my climber all afternoon, i could sit 3 days straight in that thing2 points

I had a great afternoon, bright sunshine, temps in the low 70's, I also saw for the first time a lot of deer, I had 3 mom doe's walk by the ground blind with a total of 6 fawns. Also saw one turkey. It was just great being out there with the smell of fall in the air, lots of apple on wood trees, they smell so sweet, the bee's were out on the apples. I have seem the mom doe's most of the year, but never saw they all together, they were hitting the apples hard. One fawns came so close I thought I could pet her with my hand. Now I sure wish a big buck would walk by like these 9...2 points

I also carry mine upside down so the metal teeth are facing skyward. This allows me to hook my pack back there and I also avoid wrecking my ankles when taking a large step. If you lock the two pieces together properly and use a strap to secure them together I find the noise is not bad-some clanking is inevitable when at the tree base though.2 points

Killed a 3 pointer tonight, with about 20 minutes of light left. 5 yard shot. He was with a larger buck. Thankful to have him going in the freezer. Girlfriend saw 7 doe and a basket, in the AM.2 points

My book smart friends said I was wasting my time in the 76 degre day. I saw a buck chase 4 doe around me, a wild black cat went under me and Peter rabbit went hopping by. Not to mention I was in the wood while he was working....so how does he like me now I wonder?2 points

The worst, sorry ladies, is when you feel a blowout coming on... Just saying, because, climbing down out of a tree then doing a duck walk as far as you can make it while sweat is pouring down your face praying nothing bad happens really, really, really SUCKS. THEN there is the fear of forgetting the toilet paper all the ways back at your stand or not having any at all. Been there done that!2 points

Yo!!!! I can't believe it is here already. I'm sittin at work this morning and thought, man I have to start my journal so I wrote myself a note so I wouldn't forget. It sucks getting old. So let's see, I am totally unprepared for the start of the season, but I have shot the bow, so that is the most important piece of this complicated puzzle. Rain is forecasted for this weekend so we will see what happens. I think I am cancelling soccer practice Thursday so I might sneak out for the first time after work. Good luck to all you guys out there and I look forward as always to reading the updates and stories. Zem1 point

Hi All, Back at it for another awesome season!!! Waiting to get down to camp again to hunt but in the process of scrapping a trailer and getting another hauled onto my property. I'm a few weeks behind but its rather warm anyway. I'm aiming for Oct. 21st to start my hunting....!!! I was wondering has anyone heard or read Charles Alsheimers Rut prediction this year. The best week to be in the woods? Please share your opinions and thoughts!!! Good Luck to ALL to a successful and safe season!!! Mike.1 point

Finally in the stand! Great wind for this stand, just on the north edge of a food plot, facing west. Thicket to my North. Deer in the plot! Gotta go!1 point

Forget borrowing a gun. Not going to happen. Word of advice, asking to do so is like asking to sleep with their wives. It automatically ends the conversation. Not sure about upstate folks but NYC laws are so strict, no one in their right mind will allow another person to use their firearms. I don't even allow my own brother to borrow my firearms. Note: The other question you don't ask is where their secret spots are. You'll understand once you start hunting on your own. They won't be as offended when you ask but generally, hunters don't give out their spots.1 point
-
agreed, hopping onto a website the day of the season and looking to find someone to hunt with whom you never met and need to borrow a gun is unlikely to happen, but ya never know1 point

Quotation issues should be resolved.1 point

i think if you called and explained, they would rather you find your deer than a member. I might even go the "ask for forgiveness later route"1 point

I'm not much of a bowhunter, but if you just grazed him I don't think it would have broken the arrow in half.1 point

Every stand I own gets hung on a tree in my yard pre season,I get on it kinda bounce a bit. Check straps, cables and so on. My climber gets set up and I climb up it as well. That said my Lone Wolf is an easy pack in and set up. Speaking of pre season checks I also hang from my harness just a few feet up. You have to test your equipment. You might be surprised how much your harness rides up when hanging from it,how much it may hurt in your groin area, how it restricts your arm movement and so on.oh and if you don't double the weave on the leg buckles you just might find that when hanging they come undone and you fall out......1 point

Wife drew back twice on a buck yesterday AM but couldn't get a shot and then wasn't sure so did the right thing and let down. She also had a lil one come in but passed on it as did my pop's. Fun morning and the best part was I was close enough to watch my wife and the deer. Now I have to wait for the weekend to go again.1 point

OK that's me to the right with my sub permitee Clyde to the left and Mike my son-in-law and friend next to him. Fred my friend and last member of the crew behind the camera. We were in zone 2 and my buddy Clyde who lives downstate Maine but has hunted up there before guided me.1 point

Belo, you should look into the bed hunting thing, youd be surprised how it actually works. Hopefully within the span of this season Ill have the pictures and specific buck on the wall to show for it.1 point
