I am Happy, happy, happy!!!! Took a walk around scouting after my morning hunt today. Found 2 spots I wanted to hunt; a creek bottom and a ridge top. Went back this afternoon with my climber strapped to my back and headed for the ridge. Shortly before 6pm., I spotted a deer far off through the woods; maybe 100yds away. It was heading north along the ridge and I noticed it was a buck. I was east of him and pulled out my bleat can and gave it a turn. He stopped briefly and began walking again. Pulled out the grunt tube and gave it a couple hits. He stopped but my view was obscured. I stood ready for several minutes scanning for any movement. Was he still out there? Then, I heard the soft crunching of leaves. He had swunf wide and was coming in down wind. There was a Tulip tree adjacent my stand and the leaves blocked his approach. When he cleared the Tulip tree, he was right in front of me at about 15yds. I just remember thinking, "he's a shooter." I began to draw and trouble arose. My lighted nock pulled out of the arrow shaft. WTF! I got the knock back in and he was stopped, quartering away. I prayed the nock would stay inserted as I drew back on him. Just as I anchored, he began to walk again. Only a few steps before stopping again. Practice paid off as I saw an opening through the branches and thought I could thread it through. The Magnus Buzzcut made a complete pass thru and stuck in the ground; lighted nock still in place. He took off running and made it 40-50yds and stopped. It is now that I am hoping that I made a solid shot. Then, his back rump dropped slightly. Was he going to go down? That's just what happened. He got weak in the knees and woobled, then hit the ground. He was done. Just as it started to rain. Once I remembered how to use my phone(my hands went numb), I started calling friends and family. And my cousin, I was going to need help loading him up.13 points

Well Saturday evening was quite exciting for me. Hunting 3A in the catskills which is a very very sparce region with one of the lowest harvest rates in all of Newyork. Around 5:45 I was sitting at a crossroads coming off of a rock ledge and the lower areas by the esopus river. 2 does came walking through and then I saw him.. and told myself there is no way this is happening an 8 pointer is rolling in behind the girls. I wait for the girls to pass, I stand up and wait for him to come in. He puts his head down to sniff or something and I draw back.. he walks a few more steps probably 20 yards tops and gives me a perfect broadside. Arrow was through and through right into the heart. He lept and took a few steps. Wobbled and fell over.. game over. So I successfully got my First buck, and to that affect a Catskill buck =) Im quite pleased with how things turned out. Spent the afternoon today quartering him up, and getting him into the fridge. I will finish the butchering and cleaning up the meat before freezing them away. Spoke with a taxidermist and will be having him shoulder mounted since hes my first buck and bow kill and I could not be happier with the outcome. -Dors7 points

There's more important things in life than hunting. For example, you can role play with her. Have her be the doe and you can be the buck. Tell her you're in a rut and need to mount her. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems5 points

I harvested an adult swap donkey last night at 5:15, with my compound bow at 45 yards on state land. This was my second time out bow hunting this year. I had seven different deer come by where I was standing. I was hunting on the ground, with no blind. Eye ball to eye ball. The only thing that would have made it any better would be if I had used my long bow. I will use my long bow for the next one. Not to bad for someone 71 years old.5 points

Well getting all dressed up in front of my lease this evening. Had a "concerned" resident ask me if I was hunting in those woods and told me there were houses around me and people get concerned. 5 yes ago I would have told the dude to take a hike. But I took the high rd. Explained to him that I lease the land to hunt and follow all the nys regulations when it came to hunting. Then added if there is any consolation we bow hint this property only. He wished me luck and drove away. Then I made the 10 minute walk all the way in packing my climber. Get to the tree I want and realize because the guy interupted me I forgot to put on my safety harness. Back to the truck I went. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 22 points

Every one would tag out if they had 100's of acres food plots and pattern the deer on their property via trail cams- I've gone years eating tag soup hunting public land - it's just the way it is- but a bad day hunting beats any day working or loafing2 points

Alright, why not! At work.... Always nice after a day of deer hunting to be greeted by a loyal pet....2 points

One single boom from our blind this morning. Pretty good story with it too. I was up driving around after work last night just checking out some fields. I saw lights on at the camp up the road so I stopped to see how he had made out so far. Now this guy has his land posted and he means it, but I have always gotten along with him because I respect his land and right to use it himself. Right off the bat he asks if I have any youth hunters I am taking out in the morning. I tell him I have a young lady who is anxious to try and shoot a deer. He instantly tells me to get her there early for breakfast and shows me where a blind is and how to get to it without emptying the field. This is a guy I have known for years and not once has he invited me to hunt his land. Well, we showed up at 5:00 and we could smell the bacon as soon as we got out of the car. So after a quick breakfast and a lot of encouraging talk, we head to the stand. At first the understanding was she was only allowed to shoot a doe, but after seeing how excited she was, he said she could shoot a buck. At first she was excited about getting a buck, but before it was even light enough to shoot, she told me that Jim was nice enough to let us hunt his land and she just didn't feel right about shooting a buck the first time there. I thought to myself that my buddy and his wife may not hunt, but they sure know how to raise a kid. So it finally gets to shooting time and the field is empty. It is 34 degrees out so I tell her to just wait until the sun starts to hit the far corner of the lot where the apple trees are. A half hour later the sun finally reaches the apples and it wasn't ten minutes before we saw movement. Two young bucks go right to eating apples off the ground. I could tell she wanted to shoot, but she stuck to her guns and waited some more. A little while later I saw movement about half way down the field and two does stepped out looking towards the apple trees. They are only about 70 yards away, so it is a slam dunk shot as long as she stays calm. She slowly sets the .270 on the sticks, takes a couple deep breaths, and pulls the trigger. One doe runs, the other drops in its tracks. She takes the gun, empties the magazine, and stands it in the corner. She tells me that it was the most exciting hour she has had in her life, and then starts shaking and grinning from ear to ear. We hear the four wheeler start up and pretty quick, here comes Jim. We go out and load it up after getting a few pictures, and head back to camp. We walk her through the field dressing, and she gets through it better than some, and haul the gut pile to a pit already dug by Jim for just such things. He asked her why she didn't shoot one of the bucks and she tell him that it was his land and he put the time and money into it, so she wasn't going to take advantage of him. I could tell that this statement took him by surprise coming from a young girl especially. He promptly told her she was welcome to come hunt his land any time she wanted. So, it looks like maybe we have another hunter on our hands. I honestly didn't know what to expect out of her, but man, she passed any sort of test I could have thrown at her. Very enjoyable morning and backstraps coming for lunch.2 points

In the same boat as you WCC. We have a big group of a regular 8 guys and we are looking for a lease in Columbia because the properties formerly owned by family and friends has been bought up by others and we now have no room for ourselves. We plan on keeping the group together so we have been trying to find leases in the area, but it's almost impossible. Good luck to you guys.1 point

One of the things I love most about hunting is how quickly your season can go from the worst ever to the best. All it takes is the right deer. I have been at it for 20 seasons now. Every one has been different. Some I can't step in the woods without passing on deer, others I have to hunt all season before killing anything. You have to take the good with the bad. I do the same thing for good and bad seasons, hunt. Just keep hunting and it will all come together. If this is your first bad time in 10 years, then I would say your doing really well. Is that a confidence booster?1 point

Hard to diagnos from this one photo, but when it looks "clean" and occurs on the brisket like this it is often a Hydrocyst (also called a Seroma). They usually aren't harmful to the deer unless they get so big that they impair mobility. The meat is totally safe to eat if you do take him... Here's some more information: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10370_12150_12220-26655--,00.html If you do a google image search for "deer hydrocyst" you will get a lot of similar photos. Hope this helps!1 point

That's the beauty of hunting. I have only had one deer come into range so far this year. It makes it that much more rewarding when everything plays out. Gets your blood pumping. Makes all the miserable days disappear.1 point

Does the neighbor own property? If so, tell'em your hunting on his. We had a situation a few years back just like yours. Told the neighbor if he's coming on ours, we're going on his. It all ended when we started hauling some fine deer off his property, and we made dam sure he knew it. Never trespassed again. Ended up selling the property to some real friendly people that don't hunt, but let us.1 point

Sorry to hear this. It's a good reminder that this is a bad year for ticks, please everyone check yourselves when you get home. If you have a SO to help, that's great, otherwise invest in a handheld mirror. They like to get into places where the sun don't shine if you know what I mean! Lyme is nothing to mess with. It gets downplayed a lot in the medical field but if it hits you wrong it can really mess up your entire life, trust me!1 point

Its more or less she thinks if i hunt with her family im guaranteed a deer. Told her it doesnt happen like that. They have 100's of acres and trail cams and foodplots. Told her they have those deer patterned real good. Either way my head is held high. Just getting a touch frustrating is all. But i keep telling myself if hunting was easy everyone would do it. Tomorow morning im going to just enjoy being in the woods and get back to why i started hunting. Love the outdoors and every minute i spend in it is awesome.1 point

He was at 8 yards. Today I had the kids so I decided to get the yard and outside of the house buttoned up for winter. I also got the generator and snow blower out and got them ready as well. I did some back yard shooting with my daughter. I have to say, the kid is a natural. She shot 15 rounds of 3 arrows. Out of all shots, only 2 were outside of the vitals on the target. Shes just shooting 10 yards for now. We are gonna work on 20 the next time.1 point

Here is my first buck with the bow!! He came in around 5:30 with another smaller buck down a heavily traveled path towards my stand. The smaller buck split off from the larger buck and started heading towards my 9:00 which is directly downwind of me. The larger buck kept heading down the trail, stopped at a scrape with a licking branch, took a piss down his back legs and then started heading towards my 12:00. As this was happening I notice the smaller buck now directly downwind of me is putting his nose in the air and staring in my direction. The larger buck begins to turn and present me with a quartering shot and what is going through my head is "I better take this shot now before the little buck figures me out and blows"!!! So I drew back and launched an arrow..... He jumped and ran ten yards... then took 7 or 8 slow steps and then went out of view disappearing under the canopy of branches. Now I am texting my buddies how I screwed up and missed a nice buck and I'm not worthy of sitting in this stand, etc. So 30 minutes go by and I decide that I at least want to go find my arrow and broad-head. So now I'm on the ground looking around and I notice blood on the ground!!!!! As I am having this epiphany I notice the buck laying under a tree about 25 yards away looking at me!! So I grab my bow and the only shot I had was through his neck so I took it and ended it for him. Turns out my first shot went through his one lung and then passed through his gut on the opposite side. I know I should have just left the woods when I saw him down and waited it out but I couldn't contain my excitement so I took the follow up shot. Can't wait till November 16th.1 point

I was reading a book when at 5pm I thought I heard a grunt...there had been nothing but squirrels and that stinking wood chuck....ha the gun comes out tomorrow,,,,...I glassed the woods and there was a large doe and fawn...all spooked up...they exited stage lft...when I saw legs moving 140 yrds out...in files some fawn but absolutely huge doe with some yearling doe....Great they will be headed this way ...the fawn already were headed for the big oak behind the blind....when on the scene charges a rowdy 6pt...and he manages to chase all the older doe out of the area...then proceeds to feed...well this doe wasn't look too big to me until she had another doe and fawn walk by...the 6pt was headed our way and she kept a weary on on him...at 20 yrds she finally turned broad side and I let the arrow fly...it hit her and she nearly tipped over and then reared up and flipped over on to the arrow...it had hit her opposite shoulder...she never left that spot until I picked her up with the tractor.... But alas she then promptly sought her revenge...besides breaking the arrow....when returning with the tractor there were to good sized fawn standing over her ....geezzz....thankfully she had no milk so they will be fine and have each other....I glanced back as I drove away with her in the bucket...the two just stood on the edge of some sorghum watching us leave ...Oh well it won't taint the taste!1 point

Was an honest mistake with good intentions in mind. An apology was made, but I guess some people are too eager to take a stab after the fact. I for one appreciate the info regarding youth stands and blinds. Learned something today. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems1 point

I stuck this 8pt last night at 5:45 pm. All night long there was a light misting rain and it had the deer moving! I had a doe and fawn came in really early. It was the smallest fawn that I have ever seen this time of the year. Covered in spots and couldn't have weighed more than 40lbs. Shortly after I had a total of 6 does work their way in. They all made it within 20yds but I had no intentions of taking a doe yet so I let them all walk. The rain stopped, the sun went down and here he comes!! A nice 8pt worked his way down the lane a presented a 10yd broadside shot to me! Yeah I love it when a plan comes togther!1 point
