of course he's free to say whatever he wants, but apparently not while he's employed by A&E............simple enough, when you sell your soul to the man, you gotta play by his rules. Imagine if you owned a business, and one of your employees gave his anti whatever rant to every customer who came in, I'm pretty sure you would cut him loose if it alienated a large percentage of you customer base, or even if he stood on the public sidewalk in front of your business after he was off work and did it..............because I'm sure some will say he can do whatever he wants once he's off the clock.

Great topic! I had one story in particular that I wished to share a few months ago and never did. It was told to me by my neighbor, Sylvester Novak, growing up who very much served as a grandfather to me. I made my first dollar off of him, he taught me how to swim, garden, etc. This story was told to me the better part of 15 years ago, and unfortunatly he passed on several years ago, but it is one I will never forget. It was just after WW2 ended and he just got done serving as an engineer on a sub. He and some buddies went up to Maine for a whitetail hunt. The area they were in was pretty much all clear cuts. They set up camp and everyone promptly got deathly ill. The weather was warm and rainy and not the best for hunting. One guy struggled to get out hunting and ended up shooting a monster 10pt. They all managed to get this deer back to camp and there was only one small tree around to attempt to hang it from. They got a rope around the tree and tried to hoist it up. The tree bent right over barely getting the deer halfway raised up. That night it cooled down to well below freezing. The next morning they looked out and the deer was completely off the ground, to the point where they had to cut the tree down to get the deer. The frost had removed so much "water weight" from the deer it allowed the tree to spring back up over night. The buck ended up well over 200#. The details of the rack and exact weight have been forgotten. I tried to look up the Maine 200# club records but I can't seem to find any records online. I know the guy ended up getting a patch and things like that. Whenever I feel like crap and don't want to get up to get out in the woods I think of that story. It worked this year as I had a horrible backache and pushed myself to get out, I ended up getting my buck during archery that day.

Why is it so many people look like grumps when getting their picture taken with game? I ever got a bear that nice in that pretty a color I'd be ear to ear.

Quite a common misconception. Coyotes are a keystone species. Killing them off is impossible because they will rear more pups to replace the ones killed. There are a host of critters in NY that can also help in the decimation of your small game . Opossum, skunks, bears, fox, weasels, mink, fisher, bobcats, martens, raccoons, and dozens of species of raptors. As a hunter/trapper, I personally rather enjoy coyotes. They're way more challenging to hunt than deer.

I always love going over to my grandparents or when hunting season rolls around to hear some stories that other hunters have to tell. I was thinking I haven't seen a post that people just reminisce with stories from themselves, Fathers or grandfathers, family friend ect you get the Idea. I will share one from my grandfather who told me one tonight about when he was 16 and shot his first deer. The location of this story I am unsure but I believe it takes place in Bakers Mills, NY. My grandfather and his father and friends use to have horses bring in a draft tent for a week and hunt the deep woods back in the day. This was my Grandfathers first hunt where we was allowed to hunt alone and turned out to be a story he still tells today (Happened in 1946) The story goes that my Grandfather was sitting at the top of a mountain and the crew decided to drive towards him. As he was sitting a buck ran in front of him about 50 yards away. He was nervous as could be and took a shot with his open sights 32-40. After he shot the buck took off but soon ran right towards him getting to be about 15 yards away, My grandfather tried to rack another round but his gun jammed and the lever was stuck open. This was all within a matter of seconds, but after the deer ran he dropped about 20 yards away. Since he had time to wait for everyone to get up to him on his drive he tried unjamming his gun to see he somehow grabbed someones 30-30 round and that was why it jammed! Lucky as he was for being able to kill the buck with one shot and have it drop 20 yards away the day was far from over. The first sitter right below him made it up the hill and looked at him and said Jesus you had to shoot that monster all the way up here and this far away from camp. (He doesn't remember how far from camp he was but it took them from the morning till afternoon he knows) Well to sum this story up it ended up being a dressed out 252 pound 12 pointer that scores 147.5 inches. This is one story that I love hearing any time he tells it, but he is full of stories from when he use to be able to hunt. The following season in almost the same spot he shot an 11 pointer that scored in the 130s and wasn't as heavy. (I will try my hardest to find the pictures and scan them onto my laptop but it will take some time sorting through pictures at my grandparents house, Also he was a firm believer in never wanting the score put on the list for big bucks taken in NY while he is alive, but he said when he is gone if it helps us remember the story then do as we please! Anyone else have stories they just love to hear no matter how many times someone has told it to you?

Taking a break...unwrapping peppermint candies for the Ice cream I'm making...house is cleaned ..wax drying on floors....the apple and blueberry pies are out of oven ...and every thing but the French onion soup and Artichoke dip are done....I can't wait to have the family arrive and just enjoy relaxing with them we are getting Christmas snow and are up to 2 inches...that's just enough...it can stop any time now...LOL Everyone one last minute shopping, traveling or coming home from work drive careful be safe and enjoy the next few days....

I apologize if it looked like I was trying to bait you. I was just trying to get you to make a clear statement of where you stand on the subject. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It would be a boring thread if everyone all agreed and held hands. My accidental head shot experiences: 1) My 1st year bowhunting I was still hunting and saw a buck. He was at about 40 yards and I shot. I heard it hit and he took off running. Very good blood trail all the way to the deer. When I found him I was shocked and horrified to see the arrow sticking out of his neck just behind the jaw (not totally a head shot). The broadhead severed the jugular. I was aiming at his chest when he shot. I'm not sure exactly what happened but I certainly did not hit where I wanted to. It could have gone a lot worse, I just got really lucky. That was several years ago. 2) 3-4 years ago I was in a tree on opening day in CT. I saw a coyote and lip squeaked it in. It was slightly quartering to at 10 yards so I waited until it turned its head away to expose the chest. At the shot the coyote dropped on the spot. When I got down I saw that the arrow had struck 1/2 cm above the left eye and exited just above the right ear. The only thing I could think of was the coyote snapped its head back towards me when it heard the string drop and intercepted the arrow. Both examples are reasons why the head shot is not a viable decision. The margin for error is so small and even the slightest movement on the target end can result in a disaster. (Example- the doe in NJ this past season) It doesn't matter if you name is Oh Jin-Hyek and you can robinhood an arrow at 70 meters with a recurve; when hunting you are not in complete control of the situation. As bowhunters we don't need bad press. Deer with arrows sticking out of their heads under backyard bird feeders really hurt our image. Even if a hunter could consistently pull the head shot off it would only encourage others to attempt the same. A shot aimed at the heart will still hit other vitals and kill the deer if the arrow strikes within 4" of the point of aim. There's a lot more leeway and allowance for hunter error or the deer moving.

It isn't about whether I like it or not that's the way it is... but yes I agree that if someone working for me was doing something or saying something off the clock on a regular basis that threatened my business.. they would be fired. I would not however fire someone that was asked a question and answered the question based on their truthful opinion.. even though I have every right to do so.. just not my style. I like when some has the conviction to say what he feels when asked... I don't always like when someone offers up their opinion when not asked for it.

You can't be talking about head shots with a bow... anyone who believes they are proficient at head shot archery kills is delusional as well as unethical... there is no such thing... you may be proficient at hitting the head, but chances of recovering a dead deer would be slim.. kind of like saying a hoof shot would be a good shot just because you can hit the hoof. If you're talking about a gun shot that would be different... but the OP was about an archery head shot ONLY!

My brother head shot a deer with a 7MM, he checked it walked over to get his pack and when he turned the deer was on its feet again. Blind but standing. I downed a doe and a spike, walked up and put a 300 Savage in the doe's head and she just looked at me, the spike got a 12 ga slug and was still breathing. An arrow is designed for blood loss not shock so I can't see a bow head shot.

This is about stories but about when my Father in law would tell them. He hunted all his life with his 4 brothers. Adirondacks was the place to be Indian lake to be exact. He had a stroke at 50 and at 80 the good Lord called him home. For most of those years after the stroke our 6 hr trip to camp in the finger lakes was filled with stories about past hunts. Breaking the ice so they could run their boat up the lake, putting down the guns to fight a forest fire, tent collapsed with a few feet of snow and how it was the first day after he got back from Korea he told his wife he and his brothers were going hunting! (she almost killed him but let him go) He would tell those stories on that 6 hour trip over and over again. He never fell asleep and I never got bored. I miss you Gus you were a great guy and a wonderful hunting companion.

This is a great topic and enjoyed the stories, It's great that you and others have them to pass down. It keeps the memories alive. PRICELESS, as they say.. I hope a lot of guys post stories.I look forward to reading them

I'm just starting to wonder what makes this TV personality so important that what has happened to him has upset so many people..............he sold out to A&E and apparently either didn't read the contract or didn't understand it, this has nothing to do with Freedom of Speech, not even in the least bit............I'm sure the rest of the family that now has to show up and do their stupid act as they are required to do to satisfy the terms of their contract, must be real thrilled at the attention this has brought them.

Wow, I'm at a loss for words ...

I had a stretch for two years where I shot the deer in the head blew the horn right off the top of the deer both times. I can yell you that if hit with a 12g its not gonna suffer. It will fall right over. I've shot a couple in the neck also and there's no tracking there done. So I think its more "ethical" than to have the deer running threw the woods. I don't bow hunt cause I have had to shoot to many deer with arrows stuck in them. bluecoupe...I had a laugh after reading your post.. My parents said the same thing about having nothing to do.. The EXACT words !! nice memory.. On Sundays we stayed dressed in ties when we had afternoon family dinner. My father worked shift work, but we mostly ate at the same time every night too, and had to "clean your plate". no wasting food, people were starving !! We refer to those ways in my house as "The Father Knows Best " world.

Born in the mid-50's and raised in small-towns in NW PA. Had a bb gun when I was 5. Only allowed to shot it in my Dads presence for a long time though. Then I was allowed to setup a box filled with newspaper and target practice with it in the basement. From there, after the safety rules were beaten into my head (figuratively of course), I was allowed to take it outside to "hunt" salamanders, frogs, etc. Then onto the .22's etc. Guns were a part of life in that area back then, and still are to a large extent in that area even today. They tried keeping the schools open on opening day one year, no one showed up so they gave up. They're still closed opening day. It was common to leave the house after breakfast, meet up with friends and not show back up at the house until lunch or dinner time. No one worried and if you needed anything, you could go to the door of any house for help. "If you can't find something to do, I can find you something" were common words out of Mothers mouths back then. Very effective because you knew that they weren't an idle threat. When parents spoke back then, they meant it. They generally spoke once and if "whatever" wasn't heeded by the youngin's, there WERE immediate consequences, none of this "if I have to tell you once more"... there was only once period. Sass back or say "no"? Unheard of. I remember when I was about 15 I was going to assert my manhood and said "no" to my Father. The next thing I remember was picking myself up from the corner. Never did that again and turn him in? Never even considered it. He knew where I slept! lol - No worse for the wear though. You had chores to do and they'd just better be done without being told. We were allowed to watch 1 hour of tv a day, period. Kids were the remote control: "go outside and turn the antenna and stop when I tell you". Curfew was: "be home when the streetlights come on". Dinner was eaten by the whole family at the same time and at the same table, no exceptions. Good times back then and I wouldn't trade them for anything. A lot of that attitude still does exist but you have to get away from the cities and into rural America to find it.

If Charlie Sheen came out against him... don't have to re-think anything I'm sure I'm on the right side.

The problem is really the silent majority. The libtards/progressives have run the mainstream medium for years and will broadcast anything that promotes their agenda and block most things, if they can, that rebutts it. Small fraction groups who are vocal and yell, have demonstrations, disrupt speeches etc will get press and the politicians, who are on the libtards payrolls, will bow and implement what the libtards want. I've maintained that items such as abortion, gay marriage, guns, etc should be put on a national referendum and let the PEOPLE, ALL OF 'EM, vote on it! Not the paid for "representatives" who only represent their wallets. I think the majority of people would support the more traditional views and values. Problem is, the silent majority sits in their living rooms complaining on the internet instead of organizing to take on the libtards. That may happen someday but I fear the way things are going with todays government, it's liable to be too late. Now I'm not saying I'm above the frey. I'm just as guilty as most. I sit here and biatch with the best of 'em, but at least I do take the time to routinely write notes to my "Representatives", including the White House, regarding issues. I'm probably on every watch list in Washington. Hopefully that won't affect our flights on Tuesday too badly. I honestly believe it has in the past, but that's a different subject. Until the silent majority raises up and speaks out and until we actually start treating people fairly and TRULY equally, this country will continue on it's downward spiral. Case in point, why aren't these black youths who do this "knockout" chit being charged with hate crimes? Whites would be. (And yes, a note went to my "Representatives" about that). That's just one example. I hope this makes some sort of sense, I know what I mean but am not the most articulate individual on the planet.

And people that see that what A&E did was nothing but cowtowing to the liberal extremist minority, have the right to speak their minds on it. Face it, its just more bowing down to the PC bull crap that is so prevalent now days. a&E will face the repercussions of their actions as well. Btw, did you read what the man actually said. Not really much ignorance in it. Im not religious, and dont necessarilly agree with everything he said, but none of it was ignorant. The only ignorance has been from the people saying it was some kind of hate mongering. Id be willing to bet most of them havent read the whole statement, in its full context.

I don't understand the controversy here. He has the constitutional right to make ignorant and silly statements and his employer has the right to suspend or terminate him if they feel that his statements reflect negatively on the company. His right to free speech was not taken away. He's simply being held accountable for his statements. The company has the right to make sure that the shows that they air reflect well on them.

I don't watch the show and I have no idea what he said. I don't care if he get back on show, but he has a right to say what he wants to when he wants to.

We all have the right to say what we want in public. It's called the freedom of speach. And Phil did what everyone in this country has the right and ability to do, build a good life for his family through hard work. There are still several people in this country who believe homosexuality is wrong. They should and do have the right to speak about it.

Done. I have nothing against gay people but I do when they try to end freedom of expression and free speech. He is allowed to have his own opinion even if it does not match public perception. They asked him what he thought, now they don't like it! Funny

Paying snipers to cull deer is a horrible idea, the deer will not all be processed. This would be a burden on the tax payers for something that can be done for free and is not a good long term solution. Bow hunting in rural area's has been proven effective, cost efficient and economically profitable for the community. Bow hunting is the best solution. Deer are not the only animals with ticks, mice are a huge factor. HUGE! Wonder how the snipers will do with them. Next is fox, turkey, geese, squirrels, cats and dogs. Sounds like the overpopulation is on the human side. Funny how when more people move out east the more deer they want killed. Killing 3000 deer will not fix the lyme disease problems. They don't want them culled they want them removed thinking no lyme ticks will survive. You think those snipers are going to pick up 3000 deer, yea right. They will not donate the meat, great fix. So much for encouraging hunting, better to encourage poaching at night with bait, spotlights and snipers with silencers. All the stuff no one is allowed to do on LI. But wait we need to kill some deer so lets just allow it? Wonder what the charges would be: Baiting, spotlighting, shooting from the back of a truck, lol OMG, shooting at night, night vision goggles, silencer and a 30 round clip and it looks like life. Where is the judge I need a ruling! Opening up more area's to bow hunters and the general public would allow for more deer to be taken and the best economically viable long term solution. Deer taken would help, taxidermy, dinners, deli, gas stations etc. all helping the economy and utilizing the animal. Snipers baiting is horrible and I am shocked so many here see this as a viable solution. How would you like it if this was your hunting area and 3000 extra doe where slaughtered? To compare this majestic beast with a rat is unimaginable to me. But I see deer in a much brighter light than many, shame they can not see the survivors that whitetail deer are. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, shame so many see so little value in the life of this majestic beast. Shame on any town that treats this animal with such distain.
