Well, this hunt was no different from the rest in this spot.... beside me leaving the bow at home and toting the gun for the first time this season. I slipped in here last night and saw them getting ready to roost as usual, so I backed out. This morning I left an extra 15 minutes early because I've been pushing daylight the last few days and I know they've seen me setting up. At first light the first gobble let loose. Then the hens fired up and started flying down in front of me and they got really vocal. Next I heard gobblers on all 4 sides of me all within 50-75yds. A parade of turkeys from below were the first to arrive within 30yds and two broke off from the flock of seven and headed over to my dekes. I never made a sound until he popped his head up over the knoll and my little single shot clobbered him! The rest of the birds stood around like they were going to try to rescue him or something before I finally got up to jump on his flopping carcass. First bird I ever got with two beards at least, so that was kinda cool! When I stomped him he lost most of his tail feathers. He didn't have much for spurs. He DID HAVE two juicy turkey breasts I'll enjoy very much tonight!6 points

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2014/05/poll_half_of_ny_voters_disapprove_of_cuomos_handling_of_gun_policy.html#incart_river_default still think we are fighting a losing battle? A month ago they said that the Unsafe act had a 62 percent approval. Now down to 50 percent. Keep fighting the good fight and we will win. ow is the time to push even harder.5 points

went to little valley this morning didn't hear any at sunup so I started run and gun, got a gobble at 7ish he gobbled to the crows and every time i tried to get close he would move away. I assume he was with hens. Saw a single hen on the way back to my truck. went back out after coffee at 8:30 and nothing.. at 11:30 I decided to head back to truck, tried 1 last call on the way out and got a response! 11:55 longbeard down!! Unbelievable how fast it can happen.2 points

Killed a gobbler on Day 3 of the PA season. 19#, 3/4" spurs, 8" beard. I don't care what anyone says, PA & NY mountain gobblers are the toughest birds in the US to kill, maybe the toughest in the world .1 point

I went for a hike today and got on some more gobblers! I heard one gobble on his own as soon as the snow stopped and the sun peaked out. I found an old downed tree to hide behind, so I quick set out my rubber chicken, lol I gave a few excited calls and I heard some serious double gobbling coming my way, so I got tucked in and waited. Birds were on a dead run to my decoy. First to show up was 5 hens, and then a jake and a longbeard stopped by for a little dance off before they moved up the hill to strut and gobble. They left the ladies behind, and I literally had hens within 5ft of me for about 10 minutes straight. I'm think I'm kinda starting to get the hang of this spring turkey stuff! Heck, I even found another antler! Before all the turkey got a chance to leave the area, this little deer showed up and practically kissed me.1 point

The bear looks great! No wife so you didn't have to ask permission, right? You're lucky as some guys here wouldn't be able to bring that beast into the house. Grins...1 point

in my opinion, the people who are pretty much content with the way things are really don't make much of an impact at an election time, it's those who are fighting for a cause and are very passionate about it that make the difference.......1 point

I am not sure if other parts of the state are the same, but you would have a hard time traveling a mile without seeing anti safeact signs in yards..1 point

As odd as this might be to hear from me, I believe if you're going to legalize them and consider them archery equipment and a big driver being herd management (particularly in urban areas) then they should be allowed everywhere.1 point

Trespassing is trespassing. I have a new lease this year with deer stands all over it. Once I tell the owners of those stands to get the stands out and stay out, that's their only warning. After that I will have them arrested every time I catch them. Im sorry, but the excuse that "ive been hunting here for years" isn't going to work with me. The same has happened to me and I found a new place to hunt. Leasing is the future if you don't own land. Trespassing is just a slap in the face because I know they can read the 100 posted signs I put up. I wont shoot people with paintballs, but I will make sure they never shoot another deer on my lease.1 point

I think it was said 2x that he was only 8 ft over the property line. Doesn't matter he should not have been there. He said he was never asked to leave the property, Doesn't matter because he knew he was over the property line. Glad he didn't have a heart attach, maybe the embarrassment will stop him in the future.1 point

Yep yellow morels. Nice find, they are deeeeelicious! Remember that spot. They could return every year. Just don't pull the "root" out. Always cut the stem Would you care to divulge any info about the terrain, elevation, and what direction the hillside faces? Most morel hunters in the northeast focus on looking around ash, elm and old apple trees. Were any of those trees nearby?1 point

I always love it when they use the " but I've been doing it for years" defense because that all of a sudden makes it right.1 point

Any gun sale to an out of state resident has always required an FFL transfer and a NICS check on the buyers end. If I were you, I would go to www.gunbroker.com and list them there. I'm sure you will get a better price for each one of them there and will have a lot less hassle and phone time with people who won't buy one of them. Plus, the BUYER pays the shipping, insurance and FFL transfer fees. Gunbroker's fees are a pittance, especially when you will get top dollar for each of them on there. Just start the bidding at the minimum price you will sell it for, and then watch the buyers bid even more. As the seller, you will not need an FFL on your end to ship a gun via UPS to the buyers FFL. The guns are easily shipped out of any UPS hub location to the FFL the buyer is using on his end. List them there and tell everyone here they are on there. Online, you will get thousands of people looking at them, whereas on here, or in person, maybe 100 if you're lucky. BTW, guns are never a bad investment when you buy a quality firearm. They never go down in value, only up. Personally, I'm curious about the Parker and Colt doubles myself.1 point

A friend of mine who used to do a lot of wildlife photography ( back in the 35 MM days)had lots of pictures that he had taken of a bearded hen over a period of several years. I do remember that he told me that the bearded lady had produced 43 poults in the time period that he had photographed her. I also read someplace that a significant number of hens ( perhaps 10 %) will grow beards if they live long enough. Kinda like Italian girls....1 point

BULL! Don't get that union crap involved here. Unions have no pull in the south because they are not wanted or needed by the workers. All the current employees are being offered transfers. Remington has always offered health insurance and paid time off. So do most large corporations in the area they are moving to. Probably no relocation paid and hourly rates competitive for the area, but a better life and a job where freedom still means something is better than $405 per week in NY unemployment. They're not selling out, they are escaping tyranny and extortion by the state government. They know soon most of their products will be illegal in NY, so why would they be expected to stay here? If the Remington workers want to cry about injustice, they should've all been in Albany the day after the Safe Act was signed. But unions support Cuomo, don't they? You lie down with dogs, you get fleas. True Patriots don't comply with tyranny. The tree of Liberty has to constantly watered, sometimes with the blood of true Patriots. If you can't move to stand up for New Yorker's rights and liberty, you are not a true Patriot.1 point

moog : Bow hunters fought against the youth hunt, bow hunters fought against crossbows, the only thing they are for is getting longer season and antler restrictions so they can get big bucks. On this and many other sites and in politics they have voiced there distaine of when the youth season is and the use of crossbows for the last two weeks of what they call their season. Bow hunters are the ones calling gun hunters fat lazy slobs, and that gun season should be only one week,or that gun hunters are happy trigger dopes who dont care how many deer they wound. Make a good shot with a gun the deer drops dead, make a good shot with a bow you track just like a bad shot with a gun and a chance of loseing a deer even with that good shot.Just saying. You dont hear gun hunters crying about there season being to short or that if someone wants they can use a bow or crossbow during gun season, nor do you hear gun hunters crying that there are not enough big bucks. No one needs to prove that which is a mater of public knowledge or can easly be found by reading the posts of bow hunters.1 point

if another course is required, I'll stick with my compound until I can't walk into the woods anymore.....and I would venture to guess that I'm not alone, my 33 years of bow and gun hunting have taught me more than some guy talking to me for 6 hours because NYS decided he's an expert............no thanks.1 point

they make forms to fit any deer, there are several manufacturers that make forms, and a good taxidermist adjusts the form for the proper measurments of your deer/game. (perhaps legnthning the nose or shortning it). in general a straight on head doesnt look very lifelike and i know several taxidermists who do not like to do them. a slight turn is much more realistic. but it is your mount and should be done the way you want it, a full upright head strait is what you want he should acommodate you. or id look for a different taxidermist.1 point
