All different levels of bowhunters out there. The only one I worry about is me. I do my best, and can't ask for anything more than that.7 points

He had that in quotes...I'm thinking...the season starts later?...Yes it happens every where...ya just have to keep fighting it...and yes "serious " hunters manage to take the big bucks in Sept here as well...I always find it curious. When there are absolutely no seasons open...and the farms are to our south and west . Every single Sept just at velvet drop the nights fill up with all kinds of gun shots just to our north east. How suddenly some well known roamers just disappear never talked about...but a year later are on some guys wall....hhhhmmm.......All you can do in those situations is be the best hunter you can be and take pride in the legal takes you get....5 points

I shoot a ton each year because I love to shoot.I also know guys that don't have the time and don't shoot till the month before season.Does it show?On some hell yes it shows and some it doesnt.Does that mean that the guy who has a max range of 20-25 yards shouldn't go out?No it doesn't.This bickering between hunters really pisses me off,and it needs to stop.I have had bad years where I shot a deer and didn't recover because of various reasons, some were me and some were not.5 points

The real problem is that colleges are way overpriced. No way in hell that college should cost as much as it does. Even the best schools shouldn't cost too much more than a public college. $40 or 50K or more per year for college? Come on. These days many students don't even have to attend class, nor do the professors need to be there, so why these huge costs?? Colleges seem to be a HUGE racket these days and they are getting away with it. But how do we fix this?? My advice to kids is NOT to go to these high priced schools. Some may get great jobs after graduating high priced schools, but everyone won't. If someone is smart and is a good worker, they can end up with great jobs from the lower priced colleges as well. Not worth paying huge amounts to these schools for their name recognition.4 points

I agree that a college education should not be a guaranteed right and that it should not necessarily be funded or subsidized by the government. But, my wife is from Ireland and I think they have an interesting system. Tuition is free, but entrance is by no means guaranteed. Only the best students get in and their system prepares them for the professional workforce very well. Those students works their asses off in high school and preparation for pre-college exams. Their scores on those exams determine if they get into college, which school they qualify for, and what programs they can study- no 'undecided/liberal arts' majors. There are some fees, but tuition is essentially free.3 points

Well tell me what is the problem? What is out in the fields eating the profit 24/7 ? Well yes it's population control and a very small part, both of the permits I mentioned account for 2% of the deer take so it's a very small part . To be honest I don't use doe permits because the farm gets dmaps ,so there are more permits in the system for everyone in the zone to get and use. When friends come hunt with me and they don't have tags for our area I can give them dmaps, more then a few guys took does hunting with me that otherwise could not. I'd give you two. I see benefit for many here.2 points

Real men play by the rules. Real hunters hunt by the code. Honor the code and respect yourself.2 points

I agree it is a serious issue; however, in the grand scheme of things, you can't let it breed jealousy or hate and let it take away from your enjoyment of playing by the rules. If you see it, report it; otherwise, focus on how you can score the big bucks the right way.2 points

I agree with this too. As hard as it is to justify the price, if you try on an UA jacket and then try on a field and stream jacket the difference is night and day. Do deer care? Of course not. With the 100 different camo patterns out there, do you need the matching pants? No. Will the deer notice if your pants are mossy oak and your jacket realtree ap? No.However if you want comfortable, breathable, waterproof and warm you're going to pay. I like the tight fitting jackets for bow as it keeps the stuff away from my string. With gun? You can kind of wear whatever you want as long as it's warm haha. I bought a pair of UA gloves off clearance in March. They retail for $74. Unbelievable for gloves. But my hands don't sweat. They're warm and waterproof. But they were $30 on sale. That's when you need to buy.2 points

Govt. tell many other industries what they can charge for their services. Medical comes to mind. I think that industry is a run away train. I agree on the no interest loans for college but it should only be for specified majors. A 4 year degree in Australian Aboriginal studies should not be considered. If the colleges want to offer it, fine. IF a student wants to take it, fine. There should be no aid, no interest loans for it.2 points

Sorry, but a college education is not something that should be guaranteed for everyone. You already get a high school education on the tax payers dime. You want to get a better job than that will get you? Work for it, aka pay your own way. What the hell is with this entitlement mentality now days? What happened to EARNING things and being proud of it? Sorry if that offends you, but if the shoe fits...2 points

They need a study to figure out that Debt curbs the purchasing of high cost items? Shocking... This is nothing but the sowing of seeds to forgive student loan debt, or let the government hand out free college educations to everyone, all on the tax payers dime.2 points

I am a fairly new archery hunter ( just don't get out much) never connected on a shot. I am trying to understand why shooting with a modern compound bow is hard. All the new sights releases and all the other add ons really make it a point and shoot. Hunting is a different story I'll give you that just drawing with a deer in range alone is a task. But the shooting part imo is pretty straight forward and I don't understand why anyone would need to shoot 100s if not 1000s of arrows down range. I don't shoot that much with anything and am incredibly confident with all my weapons of choice. I'm not trying to start a argument I am asking why would I ot anyone need to shoot thay much. Seems like 15-20 shots consistently in the bull at the desired range a few times before season would be more than enough...if I am missing something please inform me2 points

I had the exact feeling going into the ultrasound, while out of honest truth I was a bit bummed when I found out it was a girl. Today as I hold my 3 week old daughter, I couldn't be happier. I plan to take her hunting, fishing and teach her how to fend for herself. As I think back, these are all the exact same reasons why I fell in love with her mother. As it's in god's hands, whatever you have hope that it may be healthy and so much the same for mom. The rest kinda just falls in place. Good luck!! btw great names.2 points

I have a 17 yo girl and 13 yo boy. Both completely different in more ways than one. First off pray for what ever you get is healthy. Second be thankful it is healthy. My daughter at a young age showed an interest in hunting then she discovered something more interesting... Dolling up and boys!! Lol. My son on the other hand - give him an xbox, food and a bathroom and he's happy...well... until he discovers girls... At least I do have a hunting buddy for now...2 points

Just because something cost $300 doesn't make it a bad buy. If you get a long usable life out of it and it does the job you want it to do, then it is worth it. Maybe you can get the same from a $100 jacket or pants, maybe not. Only you can decide what the likelihood is. I have an IWOM that cost be around $300. I'll probably use it 1-2x a season most years. Last year, I hunted with it more because of unusually super colder temps in gun season. It was brutally cold. I could have layered every single piece of hunting clothing I had and I still wouldn't have been able to hack it. I slipped that thing on and hung out for 6 hours without so much as a thought of being cold. I could have shot several does had I wanted to, an opportunity I wouldn't have had otherwise. If I wear it 25-30x in ten years, that's a minor cost investment for those conditions in my mind. Heck, I'd spend about that much just in gas getting to the hunting spot.2 points

Cleaning out the freezers I discovered some really old bacon I got on sale to take to camp over the years...well everyone turned to turkey bacon so it got forgotten.... Seeing season is so close I was thinking that since I caught that bear on the cam this spring I might take that bacon out to a stand area and fire up the portable Webber....get the area smoked up in stiky maple bacon grease...then the boys can have the grease that didn't burn blk over their food....That smell should travel a good ways and stay in the area awhile don't you think?...Season hasn't opened yet and I won't be leaving the burnt bacon and grease...so it's not baiting...just encouraging a look see... what do ya think?1 point

take 1.5 ounces out the day of and put it over a heat source. I have used a 1# coffee can as a vessel with a smaller soup can inside suspended over a sterno or candle. ...burn it and get is nice an smokey. Probably he same as honey. Legal to have 1.5 ounces. (6) It is unlawful for any person to possess a field or use more than 1.5 fluid ounces of a liquid scent or lure when hunting bear.1 point

I have to ask? Did something happen other than the economy...where ppl having kids, as we did, stopped putting funds away for their education immediately after they were born? When deciding to have kids that and life insurance was the first thing that was considered. Everyone back then tried to do that, at least ppl we knew. Now granted with buying a home and raising them we did not save as much as we planned..but our daughter went private 6 years and only had 30 thou of debt...her tuition a year was 35-37thou a year back then. Our son worked and his job covered his tuition every semester...So he ended up owning his home at the age of 21... But then again we didn't have the toys and vacations and well many "extras" until they where out of the house...They aren't having kids and are enjoying the toys and "extras " at a younger age than we are...Choices1 point

The concerns around these 2 young man are well founded. Both in terms of the prospect of wounded deer, as well as their development as ethical hunters who understand what will be required of them and their equipment to "get it right". BUT, we all start somewhere. I will admit that my first 3 or so yrs of bowhunting I was clueless. Dad never bowhunted. And at that age I didn't have the maturity, I guess, to realize that I needed to work hard to learn the nuances of shooting, importance oftuning, etc. It was a blessing that I didn't wound any deer (missed a couple) and met a great hunter in the woods one day who took time to mentor me. It wad like I had to "start over" after 3 yrs of basically wasting my time. If that guy (mentor) wasn't so gracious in helping me out, God only knows how long it would have taken me to get on the right track. (For record, this was pre-internet, and information didn't grow on trees the way it does now).1 point

thank you so much guys I am completely floored! While I had these images of a boy coming on hunting trips I cant imagine what its going to be like to see my baby girl for the first time! My older brother is days away from having his first girl and one of my best friends just had a girl as well. I cant imagine what its going to be like but I am ready for whatever life throws at me. whew man its just wild! I will post pics when she is born she is due in march. I am just happy she is healthy and growing and I guess ill try and find some Barbie dolls in blazing orange...gotta start somewhere!1 point

Nothing wrong with a few creature comforts while you hunt. Hunting is not supposed to be some form of deprivation and torture. You don't get extra points for pain and suffering ... lol. As far as I'm concerned, up to the point where it all becomes a burden to carry, the more the merrier. What ever keeps me on stand longer, belongs in my pack.1 point

All day hunting is exerting, especially if you still hunt or track! Triple decker honey ham/turkey/cheese sandwich, I stuff it into a Tupperware bowl. Chips and a soda to wash lunch down. Trail mix, 3 musketeers, apple, granola bars, Gatorade, another soda and a water or vitamin water. I carry less liquids on LI as I am much more restricted in area. (Halloween candy!)1 point

Congrats !! I have a 12 yr old daughter that takes ballet 5 nights a week and is incredible at it. On the other hand she's been putting nightcrawlers on the hook and taking fish off the hook since about 4 yrs old. At 4 she was more impressed with the skinless red fox I was skinning than the pelt itself. Been taking her pre turkey season to "to listen to the woods wake up " before she could walk, She's a rock in sitting still as I've taken her actual turkey hunting this year. Cricket single shot .22, Ruger 40th anniversary 10/22 and a pink laminate Remmy youth 20 gauge thats all suited up for turkey. Right now she says she's too busy for boys but when that first date comes, the boy is coming into the house to pick her up and witness the wife and I cleaning guns ! Wishing you a healthy happy baby whether it's a boy or a girl > Enjoy the moment, it's amazing to be part of what you're about to experience.1 point

I haven't seen mossy oak or real tree worn too much as a fashion statement. I do see tiger stripe and army though. I have a legendary whitetail bathing suit. It's awesome. Almost all my hats are camo and I wear them all the time. I have a few nice fleece jackets that have been retired from hunting that I wear occasionally. Or I might stop and run some errands on my way back from scouting/prep in camo jeans and shirt. I have a fair share of deer related shirts that aren't camo that I wear. I feel people judge too much. Catch me on a weekday in khakis in a nice polo driving my nice car and you might think I couldn't fix a clogged drain or have ever spent a minute in the woods. Catch me on the weekend unshaven in ripped work jeans and a dirty shirt in my beat up pickup and you probably assume I'm white trash and chances are I earn more than you. At the end of the day, don't ever judge others based off appearance. Edit. Forgot about my camo iPhone otterbox. It's a great way to connect with other hunters. They spot it and the convo goes from there.1 point

I spoke quickly during a lunch break on a nice day - no ecological purpose. Certainly, it serves the purposes of the people who hunt them. My land management decisions are based first on the health of my forest. Killing coyotes does not change deer populations. It only disrupts the coyote social order causing more to reproduce. Bye.........1 point

Expensive yes, but I had to upgrade my hunt outfit ten years ago and bought weather resistant Browning bibs and jacket with removable inner insulated lining. Pretty versatile, but cost $300. But I figured it would be my last outfit. So if I get 25 years out of it, It cost me 12 to 14 dollars a year. Not too shabby for being warm and dry.1 point

yea that's a good point they would have to come out with some kind of a refer stick breathalyzer or something like that I would imagine. Its really supposed to be meant for relaxation not for work. I would much rather see an opioid breathalyzer way before a pot one. I think the heroin epidemic in this country is far more terrifying then any reefer sticks1 point

They were in the heat of the moment but they did so many things wrong. Ran-kick in the predator instinct. Separated- should have stayed together s a large group and made as much noise as possible. make yourself look as big as possible. unzip you jacket and hold it open to the sides. Terrible outcome.1 point

Where it went so bad was people saying if the line was posted they wouldn't have crossed it, sort of like saying if the doors were locked they wouldn't have borrowed your car or entered your house as an excuse - using your examples with respect. See the "line" that was crossed there? Land is personal property someone owns, a lack of signs does not give someone else the right to use it. Just like leaving your car unlocked does not give someone the right to enter it. People have a right to use public land, with that right comes the responsibility to know where you are and whether or not you belong there. It's simple. Put in the effort! And look at all the confusion and conflicting information about something as simple as posting on here - people come on and give advice with good intentions I guess but they don't know what they're talking about. Personally what it boils down to for me is I make sure my land is posted legally under environmental law (different than penal law as some have pointed out) but I don't go crazy trimming trees, painting, going significantly closer than 660' between signs, etc which I think has the potential to be an eye sore in the woods and just creates a lot of extra work for me. But my boudary lines are mostly obvious, and where they aren't I make sure the signs are apparent, that's all. If you need to do more that's your call. I notify my local conservation officers once a year that this has been done and welcome them to come out and inspect it. If I catch someone, I charge them - no questions. And the officer can then verify in court that the property was legally posted. Once word got out that I charge people, most of the problems stopped as people didn't want the hassle of going to court whether they ended up paying a small or large fine. Charging people is easy, just take back tag info and ID then give a written deposition. No officer need be present, and cell phone recordings (video, pictures) help. BTW, I do put my cell phone on all the signs and this has helped tremendously with the ethical hunters too, but I only let them track onto the land if I am (or one of my guys is) present and there is good sign. I've unfortunately had a few neighbors ruin the blood trail thing too... Also, I do not put my full name - first initial last name. Have had people see names on signs and then use those names saying: "insert name on sign here" gave me permission. And for the person who said posting boudaries is like taking a walk in the woods - I must be doing something wrong all these years because it is a lot of work to do it right!! For the guys saying the burden is on the landowner and you would stay off posted hunting land but don't know if you cross onto private from public if it's not marked, etc. - The burden is also on you to know where you are. Land does not need to be posted to be charged for trespass, that's only under environmental law. (I'm not singling any one out, but several have made similar comments to this.) The burdon under penal is more on you, burden under environmental is more on the landowner. But to say you wouldn't go there if it was marked is like saying you wouldn't steal a car if it was locked, plain and simple! If you don't own it and it's not public, you have no right to be on it. Also, regardless of the law and what it says, there's a thing called ethics. If you were not taught them, you should learn them and surround yourself with hunters who practice them. Again, not saying "you" to single anyone out, just spouting my 2 cents worth. Having hunted private property growing up carrying a permission slip and tax maps (folded up in a baggy before they had zip locks), and now after owning land for 20 years and constantly have people trying to take advantage of me, my patience for those who want to tell me what to do and how to do it has worn thin.1 point
